Suckling & First Rounder for Shiel & Third Rounder(which they won't use anyway).

They'd want more than that.

Would we be happy to trade our first round pick (15-18ish) and Suckling?
Would GWS be happy with that?

50-50 I reckon

It would be a new experience for them.
After 3 years, they could select a player who isn't 1-10 and you never know what little gem could be waiting there.:)

Sorry Jamie I did not go through endless threads trying to find if this was quoted previously.
It's ok i'll forgive ya this time :p

Don't take what I say too seriously, I sure don't!

C'mon now....they gave us a first round pick for Mark Williams which ultimately gave us Shaun Burgoyne :)

I can't help but think I am being subtlely trolled....

Suckling and first rounder for Shiel would be very, very unlikely.... Shiel is the complete package waiting to tear the league open, while Suckling is an OK player with one attribute that is very high risk, high reward (which you'd be bringing into a side without the skill to buy him space, nor the experience to maximise his abilities).

If I were GWS I wouldn't be beating around the bush, I'd want Smith, Breust, Hill, Rioli etc. Quality for quality.

If it's true he wants to return to Victoria then that gives us some leverage. It of course doesn't mean we can bend them over on the deal as there's still 9 other Victorian clubs who would be willing to trade for him. If he named us (and there's nothing to suggest he has or will) then we might be able to get away with it.

It depends how much they rate Suckling. Our coaching staff seem to rate him higher than most of our supporters and Leon Cameron obviously used to be among that staff so might share similar feelings. At the end of the day GWS have a lot of young stars in the making and Shiel is but one of them. They might accept that given he's going either way they might as well get something for him akin to the Gilham for Anderson trade (I acknowledge the circumstances are quite different however).

I'm not sure we'll need to trade one of the very good players you've named but I do agree that Suckling and a first rounder alone is very unlikely to be enough here. I'm loath to throw up any other names though.

Got to admit I don't have a friend of a friend in the know so alas this is all speculation but the 3 main youngsters off contract for GWS are Jaksch, O'Rourke and Plowman.

You would hope that the club would make a play for all three, with the hope of getting one of them.

O'Rourke would improve the inside-mids stock, and might deliver on his potential with less quality youngsters (comparatively) around him.
Jaksch is that ready-made key position player that could actually be that swingman people pretend Schoey is.
Plowman is a key position defender with a superb kick. Considering the stock and age at our club, would be perfect.

At Gold Coast there's not a lot but there's some, It depends how realistic of a chance they are. Bennell is pretty close to re-signing. Steven May is a Key Forward, may not be what we need.

Also off contract are their two best ruckmen, Zac Smith and Tom Nicholls. It's more pipedream stuff but fob of Lowden, put Ceglar back on the rookie list and we'd have a ready made backup for McEvoy by bringing one of them in. Then if he can learn how to kick and be a mark up forward, they can replace Hale in best 22 and c'est la vie Grimley too!

There are some others at the Suns, but they'll probably be delisted and potential pick ups as rookies, similar to Ross this year.

I think with everyone here getting excited regarding the possibilities of Shiel we all probably need to understand that it's unlikely he will be coming here, he is one of GWS's top midfielders and is coming into his prime, his value on the open market would be equal to/if not higher than Rioli. As it stands it's pretty much accepted that O'Rourke is coming home, he would be a more realistic option and talent wise is no better or worst than Shiel, O'Rourke could also slot straight into our midfield and make the nucleus of our future with Liam Shiels, Boxer, Langford, Lewis, Hill, Smith and Hartung.

Kristian Jaksch is another coming off contract and at 196cm and 90kg could very well be a CHB for the next decade, he has told the Giants along with O'rourke their not interested in discussing contract extensions at this stage.

You must still be in camp Cotchin by the sound of it Echols :)

So that's Fyfe and Danger firmly off your list then?
I'm not really in any camp.

I don't trust names being thrown around in June.

I can't see Fyfe leaving Freo, or Dangerfield ending up anywhere other than the Cats though.

If Cotchin is smart, he'll be sizing up his options.

I doubt that we'll land either of the 3 either....I'm more so just pointing out a few things here and there as to how/why it "may" happen.

The club clearly has a solid list management structure in place and would have to do away with it's recent recruiting strategy (ie. giving up at least 1 young up and comer and an early draft pick/s) to bring one of these guys in The only way it should happen (other than Dangerfield/Cotchin via free agency in 18 months time) is by way of trading away early draft picks at the time we have needed them most over that 3-5 year period.

But who knows other than those in the inner sanctum.
What I do know is that Graeme Wright and his team WILL make the best decision/s for the future and sustained success of the HFC.
They may very well have structured things the way they have recently with the bumper 2015 free agent crop being the final piece/s of a very well designed list management model.

For the record, I am in the NO to James Frawley/Nathan Fyfe and the YES to Dylan Shiel/Kristian Jaksch, Paddy Dangerfield (as a free agent in 2015, but very much doubt it) camps.

3 other guys I'm just as keen on at the moment are via the 2014 National Draft. Lachlan Weller, Jake Lever and Caleb Marchbank.

FYI - Steven May has just re-signed with the Suns for an additional 3 years.

Convinced we need another quality key back. James Frawley as a FA fits the bill, just hope he is keen to cross and isn't seduced by Paul Roos and the changing fortunes at the MFC. Lake will finish up at the end of the year and Gibbo has 2 maybe 3 years left at best.
This will allow Shoey to go forward where is naturally suited because he still looks at all sea in defence.

We should be working through the swans list. They are going to be in a world of pain with their muti-million dollar forward line and A grade mid-field. Luke Parker has "gun" written all over him but will get paid way unders to stay in Sydney. Chase him. Has 10 more years.

he is my favourite non hawk player in the afl, a total gun and totally underrated and barely spoken about, would love him to get to hawthorn but would be tough

So apparently we'll have an extra 500k in the cap next year to go along with our post-Franklin slush fund. Should hopefully nab at least one quality signing, and hopefully two.

OK a few points here-

Dylan Shiel really? A decent midfielder in a rubbish team....How good is he really?

Jed Anderson has showed enough for me to consider him being a part of our starting midfield if fit. If Woodward keeps imnproving then he also will form a part of our starting mids next year.

Poor old Suckers has been traded to to every club in Australia on this site. My question.... if we think Suckers is trade bait then why are GWS or anyone else going to trade him into there club?

Mundy and Frawley in free agency could be a goer but any quality kid coming out of GWS or Gold Coast will see a bidding war and some club pay well over the odds to secure him.

Keep our first pick unless we are getting an absolute jet

How familiar are you with Dylan Shiel? Iirc, he was taken outside the draft by GWS, but was otherwise seen as a top 5 pick. Just because he plays for a shit team doesn't mean he won't be a star, he's only 21. As good as Anderson has been, i don't think he has shown anywhere near as much as Shiel, especially not in the context of being a full time superstar midfielder. Woodward is also pretty far off Shiel at this stage.

I agree on Suckers though. Everyone seems to be trading him off, and a lot seem to be playing down his kicking, and his improvement in areas such as speed off the mark, defensive ability, etc.

I think our only hope of picking up a GWS player is if there are more than one wanting to come back to Victoria, and there is less of a bidding war. Or perhaps if someone specifically chooses Hawthorn.

This is exactly what Wrighty and Co would be working on now. Just like they did with a promising string bean, who's old man was in the Bombers Hierarchy, called Jack Gunston. Even after it was announced we were interested and he wanted to come home, plenty of footy media still expected he would land at Bomber land due to them being interested and his old man working there. The problem was we had been in his ear for much of the year from most reports. There will be another Gunston somewhere that no-one is really talking about and Wrighty will be all over it like a fly on stink.

If there is a Vic kid wanting to head home from anywhere, and they are worth chasing, we will be getting put firmly in the box seat now.

In Wrighty I trust.

Enter Kristian Jaksch

So you're now allowed to spend over the cap if you didn't spend 100% the previous year. Probably would have been good to know before we started re-negotiating contracts, but nevertheless if we want we could have a "Sydney" style cap next year (up to 105%). So which FA's do we want? :D
