1, wingard is soo overrated, soft front runner who does flashy stuff, will get exposed this year, how he was AA is beyond me
2, brad hill is terrible
3, taylor adams will cement himself as a top 2 or 3 from this draft within 10 weeks of the 2014 season
10 weeks in and Adams is no where near it. Wingard is a gun.

1. Wingard
2. Tyson
3. Congilo
4. Hill
5. Mitchell
6. Ellis
7. Smith
8. Neale
9. Docherty
10. Newnes
11. Patton
12. Hoskin-Elliott
13. Yeo
14. Tomlinson
15. Talia
16. Sutcliffe

Early days but the draft looks weakish. If I could include pre-listed players I'd include all of Shiel, Treloar, Hampton, Hombsch and Cameron. Baugley, Hall, Spurr and Dickson could get mentions if I included mature aged players.

He is a jet. What position do you see him playing in the future?
Agree with what the TheLastEmperor said, that Newnes looks like he'll be of the most value playing an outside role, whether it be across HB, as he has been most of his career so far, or else on the wing, where I think the club ideally wanted him to play the most this year (but where he hasn't played much due to the incredible amount of injuries our leading backline options have had this year). His inside game has been a weakness so far in his career, but it is getting better of late, which is very encouraging. The likes of Lenny Hayes have also nominated him as our "future captain" plenty of times in the past year or two (may have some competition from Dunstan now though!).

From my point of view Newnes is best suited to playing as an outside midfielder whether that be on a back flank or wing. He's a bit taller than the 184cms he's listed at and competes quite well verse medium-tall forwards so he's a good size. Ideally the club sees him transitioning into the midfield but I don't see Newnes as being overly quick of mind or by hand in tight contests. I favour him playing out wide where he can use his running power and spread, which is very good, to compliment his long kicking outside of defence or inside our forward 50. If I had to compare him to a current player I liken him to Shannon Hurn without quite the kicking power but still very good.

One of those type of players that you can go to the footy to watch even when you know your team will get belted...

Same situation with Carlton and Buckley, Menzel, Docherty etc

Adams' kicking and the fact he chose the pies are the only things holding him back, but they're pretty major.

He's not really versatile enough to play on a flank (which he's been forced to do more often than not this year), and his kicking can be absolutely bush league at times.

I still like him though, inside ball winners with his kind of explosiveness are a rare commodity

Dylan Buckley is definitely better than the pick 67 he was drafted at. And before people start with the F/S argument - no other team bid for him which is why we were allowed to take him so late. If other teams rated him they would've bid for him.

Separately - since Bootsma's sacking, I'm pretty sure most Carlton supporters are happy to own Sam Docherty as our first round pick for 2011 and not Bootsma :p

Cameron is also in that draft class and Hampson from GWS, would have Cameron clearly number 1 and Hampson in the top 10.
They were pre-listed rather than drafted though tbf.

It's still part of the draft class and the peer group they are rated against.
They've also had the advantage of an extra year in the system though. It's why it would be unfair to compare the output of O'Meara to that of Whitfield, Macrae and Wines even though they're all from the 2012 draft class (though the latter three would stack up pretty well).

So how long do you apply that special rule?

They should be rated vs their peers the reason they were pre selected was because they were quality players who would of went very early in the main draft.

I think Yeo may rise up this list rapidly. Finally getting some midfield time. Had 23 disposals, 14 CP, 8 marks, 7 clearances, 5 tackles all at 82%DE.

14 CP and 7 C were highest on ground.

Last week he had similar stats with less time in the middle.

Add to that strength, a raking kick and line breaking pace and he could become a very dynamic inside mid..

I think that's acknowledged, but there's no point putting them in here because GWS effectively had the first 13 picks.

When you consider this, plus the pre-selection that GC had along with two years of mini drafting - it's easy to see why the competition is weaker than it should be.

The whole process of draft ratings after less than three years is silly - there's so many variables that go into a player's early performances, and a variable like an extra year of conditioning and training is a pretty big one. Maybe after 5 or 6 years it evens out.

Following your logic we would exclude highly rated F/S selections - After all they spend part of their previous two years in the clubs father son academy.

I like Buckley, I think he's going to be a good footballer... He's an aggressive little bugger...

Currently our only shining light from the 2011 draft and we didn't even pick him. If Brisbane was not such a basket case when he left he would probably still be on there list! Back in the good old days when our recruiting was good he would of started with us along side Newman (who is a solid football player just currently.. well.. in jail)
