Delisted #16: Josh Begley - Not offered a contract for 2021

I was excited when we drafted him, first draftee in ages that had a rig and didn't require 4 pre-seasons to compete.

Given his size and weight, and the squadron of small players we have, I would have liked the club to have given more of a chance... I guess we don't know what happens internally but surely he was worth at least a block of games this season.

Dropping him after one game is stiff yet guys like Zaharakis, McKernan, Smith got carried in the side throughout the year. Tough gig being a young fringe player at this club when mediocre senior players will always get a game ahead of you.

He got told 1000 times in the VFL last season to stop fending off and take the first option yet in his fist AFL game this year he fends of and gets caught holding the ball and in about his second possession he marks in space 70 out on the wing and waits until evey opposition players runs past him into our forward line before just bombing the ball in.
He is the dumbest player on our list and got plenty of chances before this year. He came straight back into the side last year as soon as he was ready after his knee and in 2018 was played right from the start before getting injured.
I know what you are saying about carrying old blokes but this guy is just not AFL standard. Slow thinker. Slow mover. 2 stroke engine.

His debut got us all excited but as with most players its the body of work rather than that flash in the pan that gives the indication whether they are AFL quality.

Seems to have the physical attributes to play AFL but just lacks a few things. I wonder if a club will take a punt on him.

It's a rare player who peaks in his debut game. Made us all think we had something.

For a while I thought Clarke and Begley were going to be the inside mid beasts we needed, back when they were playing midfield together in the VFL. Oh well.

Had some serious potential I feel. Knee probably ruined him, that and his need to go for the fend off at every opportunity.

Started brightly, but then lost his way I felt, either by us confusing his role or he got ahead of himself. Doing his ACL was the last thing he needed at a time he was on the outer with form & he never got close to it after his recovery.
