Add to that the fact that most clubs only play one ruck with a chop out from elsewhere nowadays, so long gone are the days of 30+ ruckmen getting a game each week. Slows the league wide development right down.
I think that decline has already happened. The fact that post knee Nic Nat and MaxGawn kept getting AA in their 30s showed that there was no young rucks to take the mantle.
Clubs don't even want to draft them anymore. Just pluck them from the seconds comps or poach them from other clubs.
Luke Jackson had MaxGawn and now Sean Darcy ahead of him though.
He's rarely had to be a number 1 ruckman...and when he has been, he hasn't reached the same heights.
He can have some superb moments (third quarter of the '21 GF comes to mind) but over the course of games it's just not his go...
As great as X has been, Goad has a ridiculously high ceiling in the long term.
He's basically MaxGawn's size with Luke Jacksons athleticism. Unicorn gets thrown around a lot but he's absolutely one.
Given the amount of picks we've had, it was absolutely worthy of selection (in an absolutely...
You’ve just answered it yourself, without Grundy and Oscar neither team make the GF.
Look I’m not saying have a gun ruck and the rest of the team is average you’ll win a flag, but a ruck is an important position, just like any other position on the team. Teams have won flags without a gun KPF...
...a good question.
If Darcy Fort plays all year I don't think they make a GF, hell if Oscar doesn't come back on in the prelim and Joe is left to ruck the whole day I don't think they do either.
But at the same time is a ruckman that important ?? Where would we be with MaxGawn or Tristan...
Not sure if you guys saw, but there was an article about Kalani in the Herald Sun during the week. He will train with the Dees in December and then return to Queensland to train with the Suns in January. Both Gawn and Witts are 32 so if he's eyeing off a ruck position at either club, it's...
Reminds me more of Grundy. The clear ruck prospect (and from SA) but no one wanted to take the risk on him early until Pies @ 18. Rucks are more out of favor since then though.
Just putting it out there - this draft reminds of the 2009 Dusty draft - lots of depth, lots of mids, lots of diversity in mid styles, not many good talls but there was a big goofy ruck called MaxGawn taken at pick 34. He reminds me a bit of him. He was best available ruck but a bit of a speccy.
AFLW seem to have a greater amount of good rucks and they don't seem to need the years of development that men do. A lot of them Wales x 2, Scholz, Morphett have burst on the scene good to go.
Stat wise she's the only ruck in the top 20 in coaches votes. Got votes in 9 out of 10 games...
...handballs to another who receives and controls the ball and gets tackled immediately.
Burst from stoppage is the most successful clearance. Not many Rucks do that.
Rucks do seem to stand out more in the womens game I think but R50’s are my fav stat for a Ruck.
MaxGawn has built a career on it.
...regress?
“I still think the Oliver stuff is a distraction and Petracca was a circus whichever way you look at it,” Mooney said.
“I think MaxGawn just needs help badly and I don't think they've got the player there to help him out.
“They bring in Tommy Campbell, who's a journeyman, they need...
Not sure about that. Clearly, rucks and KPDs do take longer, but do taller mids/flankers/3rd talls take longer?
Bont was very good in his second season iirc. Cripps was averaging 23 touches in his second year.
...was drafted at 197cm and weighed 95 kilo.
Fyfe was drafted at 188cm and 75kilo.
May as well compare Caleb Daniels development curve to MaxGawn.
Look at other players around Curtin's height / build who had their breakouts in year 5 - Hawkins/Walker/Josh Kennedy. Jack Riewoldt had his...
We're also less patient as an industry these days too when it comes to kids, both for better and for worse.
There's always been an element of wanting to 'call it early' so to speak in terms of judging a player, but it's much more pronounced these days.
With the increased attention on the...
Two major differences now, I think:
- At Geelong specifically, it is bloody hard to get a game. We lost a heap of older mids around the late 90s/early 2000s, and had room to spare. Max Holmes would have been spending 90% game time in the centre; Knevitt would be playing 16 games/year.
