Swans Chairman -

Its quite ironic I think that he says this given I understand that the Swans keep pushing to leave the NEAFL (while GWS is very supportive) and join the VFL+. Agree with him re: local...
Fair enough you weren't a fan of the comp. My reference to rugby is that I believe in Brisbane, Sydney (and Canberra a bit) inroads have been made in private schools, academies etc generally where recently aussie rules has become a good option and many that would have traditionally stayed in...
QLD will not be closed forever, even the NT is opening up mid July, so a feasible although fairly compromised draw was possible if desired. It just shows the lack of commitment to the comp - it was always different to the other leagues due to being development states.
What an embarrassment for NSW/ACT and QLD, can't even support a reduced season. Whether its the last "season" in current format or not is another issue. This is a terrible look in the big development states - can't even support a limited second tier comp. Pathetic AFL. Most positive thing that's...
Maybe even less. I've heard that more than one community team is struggling to see a reason to carry on given the new rule changes and the direction the AFL is clearly taking things - i.e. all about AFL clubs as usual and no build of the local NEAFL clubs and their games as the top brand for...
With the recent changes showing direction to AFL club needs again, I think its the last or second last season of the comp....the QLD and NSW AFL clubs obviously want to be in another comp.
Rules have been announced on NEAFL site. New payment floor and new higher cap. Probably clubs with $ OK with most of the changes. Giving the AFL clubs a 23rd player and mature player spots and budget for them seems odd to me. I am afraid this is the beginning of the end for this comp. The AFL...
I have heard that there are a bunch of rules coming in which AFL clubs wanted, including more mature ages topping up for them and parity on 23 players. Also apparently community clubs will have to find some more $ as salary cap increasing in a big way. Anyone else heard this? With NT Thunder...
Probably for a bit of security re: their strategies mate. But I'm sure either party can break the contract easily enough - the AFL especially I am sure can effectively do what they want if they give a few months notice. So 2, 3 or 5, not much difference except saves a re-negotiation (joke joke)...
So what do people think, are any of the community clubs a realistic chance of a tilt at the flag? My sense is the Lions, Swans and even the Giants again might be too strong at this time of year - as ever in this comp usually...
That is what I heard was the most likely development. However I wouldn't put it past the AFL to change its mind or further bastardise the NEAFL comp in some way. To be honest I doubt they look more than 2 seasons ahead if that, NEAFL itself has changed how many times since its inception......The...
Hi Billy - what makes you say "comp that is being euthanized" ? I thought when I saw the draw this year and the afl teams playing each other so much it was further bad sign re: commitment to the other clubs but I haven't heard much else. I did see some media about an expanded VFL team but that...
I think that's harsh on Tom Young who definitely brings/brought pressure. Probably fair comment on Bonney but I'd add to that Gillespie, manteit and T Derrickx who was lacking touch and under done (experiment did not work and unsettled side I think). As a result the ball came out of the Uni...
See you do agree with me on everything in my last post. Aspley would be better off racking up silverware in lower comps for their club's health - why they and Uni, Redland etc subsidise the AFL experiment that is NEAFL is beyond me, the benefits don't stack up, especially when they are witches...
What I will say on this re: NSW is that more locals are currently playing a better standard of footy and development of local players has improved - Swans NDS, Giants NDS, Uni, + Academies etc. On NEAFL though generally its going to explode if the non-AFL clubs don't get a fair crack. Last year...
Well said, sums up my thoughts too. Bottom line is certainty is good - one just hopes some fairness to the non-AFL clubs creeps in during finals time in particular unlike last year - it remains a compromised comp by definition but do we really need AFL clubs claiming the premiership, I think...
Nothing specific on names to share but apparently at least 3 or 4 are training in the group now. Good depth coming in for Uni with those kids and hopefully Jack Hiscox returning to the fold too. Tommy Young pretty irreplaceable though as a special player.
I do not represent Uni in any capacity but follow them due to various close connections. Haven't been reading here for a while but came upon this thread via a "Bookmarks" clean up a few weeks back.
Couple of comments - don't overestimate Gilmore's impact. Yes very significant, but even though...
Have to agree. Some good young guys in place but sounding and looking like at the C'tee level they are a bit rudderless just at the moment. Development is the "model" and thats the stuff the AFL wants to hear but what about the key footy club stuff as you say - bit sad to see a traditional footy...
I'll say Uni by a few. Should be a cracker. Very surprised Wests went down pretty comfortably in the end to Eagles last week - not sure it says Eagles on a roll now or tough 2nd semi too much to get over for Wests, maybe a bit of both. Forecast says "mostly sunny" at this stage - it would be...
Update from Sydney.
Saw young NSW Scholarship holder Jarrad Wiitts out at Blacktown Olympic park last Saturday running water for his mates in the Sydney Uni Colts. Good to see as he has not been able to play ANY footy this year due to back issues I believe. Not good for his development...
Wests definitely deserve to be favourites in this comp - they have looked the best side all year. They have experience on all lines and a terrific spine. It should be a different game v SU though than ECE, not necessarily played so much on West's terms probably. Offensively, experience wise and...
My understanding is yes. As others have said the AFL is endiong the scheme so no new signatures (shame AFL shame!) but current scolarship contracts are valid. Others might be interested, particulalry after he has another year of development under the belt (still very raw as you would expect) but...
Fingers crossed and good luck to all the lads in the Sydney Uni Colts side for tomorrow's breakfast GF (8.15am at Blacktown I kid you not) versus Southern Power.
Witts, Hartley, Parsons, Yakimov (has come up now from injury I am told) and Perry will be in action tomorrow so a fair bit of...
Excitingly Tom is, potentially, a fairly complete, versatile package. He is tall and may get taller, he is getting stronger/bigger quite quickly, he does read the play well, his skills are coming along (terrific for a 16yr old NSW kid) and yes he is quick - he is quite laconic looking on the...
