We missed an opportunity when the pies got him.
A lot of people on here didn't think he was worth chasing but he's done well for himself.
We were in on it and it was strange he chose Collingwood with the opportunities that we should have had open for a ruck at that time.

A teammate of Cripps at junior state level.

Don't see why we wouldn't be.

Weitering plus a bulked up JSOS cover the key posts. Our third tall spots are currently occupied by Gov and Haynes. Gov has been ordinary and overpaid, turns 31 later this year, and is out of contract. Haynes is building into some passable form, but is almost 33, and came over on a one year contract.

Aleer could and should replace either of them, so we should be able to assure him of a starting spot if his preseason efforts warranted it.

Preference for me would be to move Mitch on, retain Haynes for one more season if his fitness and form warrant - Haynes to play alongside Aleer where feasible, and mentor him off the field, but if we opt to go smaller structurally then Haynes to be the one to make way and play ressies.

Caveat - need to see how Harry O'Farrell goes throughout the year. Half a chance he'd warrant selection as a third tall either late this year or early next, so if that's the plan then Aleer might be surplus. Depending on cost, I'd be tempted to take him anyway and cut both Gov and Haynes, but two inexperienced third talls might not align with a finals push next year if that's where the club still see us.
Agree with most of

I agree with most of that, except the 3rd tall part.
The article I read pretty much said that his move had been agreed to by the Giants because of the quality he has to compete with for a KPD spot there.
At the same time though, he also said in the article that he would only be moving for a KPD spot, not 3rd tall.

I'd move McGovern on (even after today) and play JSOS as the 3rd tall.
If Haynes holds up, then he can be used as an interceptor and in the magoos, but Aleer would definitely be a KPD ahead of all but Weitering at Carlton, and that's what should be pitched to him.

They just said on Fox TDK contract negotiations on hold.

Honestly if the Saints want to invest 10% of the salary cap in one player go for it.

I wouldn't want to get anywhere near that number.
Jay Clark is a bit of a stooge isn’t he..?
Not a fan of his Fox appearances.

This is a negotiation where I feel all parties should be comfortable in walking away.

The money St Kilda are offering is ridiculous for someone who has done as little as TDK has. It is absolutely in his best financial interests to take every cent of it. From a pure football sense, as much as it pains me to think this, St Kilda's on-field prospects are probably better than Carlton's over the next few years.

From a Carlton perspective, I'm resigned to the fact that I don't think our current list wins a premiership or even gets anywhere near contending again. I see a full rebuild ahead and TDK probably doesn't fit the timeline of this rebuild. Band 1 compensation gets us back into the draft, and $1.5M in salary cap relief can be used in years ahead to bring in free agents that align to our next premiership tilt.

I'm neither here nor there on re-signing TDK. I get the arguments both ways. I tend to think a lot of his weaknesses are being exposed right now are related to the coaching and that a really good coach would stamp a lot of get out of his game.

I also don't necessarily believe that a ruck should be paid to the level that he is expecting. I would certainly hope, however, that we have a top-notch plan in place. If we do let him go.

One of the biggest issues that we had in our dark years was the inability to play a decent ruck. This ended up with us recruiting too many and the best one ended up having his career derailed by injury and the second one sought a trade home.

I don't want to go back to the days of chasing the Ricky Mott's, Barnaby French's, etc. desperately trying to plug holes with whoever we can get.

Clark trying to say the saints form is a part of his decision to pause talks is such rubbish. He’s being offered 600k more. That’s the reason. Maybe mixed a little bit with our poor start
I had a laugh when I heard Clark referring to the Saints form. If that's the case TDK is easily pleased.

Ned Moyle looks good (GCS) second banana to Witts

Maybe if TDK does go to the Aints then we can chase Rohan Marshall who I really rate as a ruckman

I reckon we bank the cap savings and the draft pick, and rely on Pitto and O'Keeffe, or chase another 2nd ruck with designs on being a 1st ruck. We have bigger fish to fry.

FIFY. The only reason he'd be leaving to go to the Aints is because he has dollar signs in his eyes like Daffy Duck. If he was leaving to seek success, he wouldn't be opting for that amateur suburban excuse of a club.

Witts is 33 in September. Think he has another year left in him (when his contract ends).

If we can wrangle Moyle back to Melbourne then I'd do it in a heartbeat with or without TDK staying.

Would be a clever get at a reasonable price.

Really feel for Kemp. Thought he was looking really settled.
Evans instead of McMahon is starting to bite. Thought it was an error. but it could be a catastrophe now.
Yep it’s pretty sad. We can’t even enjoy a win not to mention Kemp, Harry and Charlie feels like a great forward line. When you add Austin choosing Evans over McMahon then it’s just outright depressing.

The strategy for them targeting TDK is to pair him with Marshall with a split rotation of forward and ruck play.

Marshall has successfully integrated well with other rucks (Ryder) in the past.

Wasn't Austin that chose Frank. It was a combination of the coaches (Voss) and Agresta.

Austin ticked it off but really it should be on the recruiting manager this one.

It’s depressing losing Kemp.
I don’t think Austin chose Evans though as that would have been on the coaches. That’s why they train with the group.

Absolutely!!! He was training under the coaches noses all summer, so there's zero chance his selection had anything to do with Austin. As Wickzki said, Austin would just had to tick him off, which would have been a fait accompli if Voss and co wanted him on the list.

Absolutley shithouse selection when we had KPP's like Philips and McMahon there for the taking. Huge risk not taking a tall, and it's likely gonna bite us right on the bum as the season progresses. Hopefully McMahon is there at our pick in the MSD.
