Opinion: We need an Eddie Betts statue in Eddie's Pocket at AO

As we approach Gather Round, here's an idea I thought up a year or more ago for one of my monthly Wino Groups (titled the Big Ideas group) where everyone has to come up with something... I've had a few rippers in the past, like making Public Transport Ministers actually take public transport so they at least have a clue what us who use it have to deal with. But this was one for footy lovers.

We should have a bronze statue of Eddie kicking for goal (obviously our side of the fence because it can't be on the ground) from Eddie's pocket. Make it official, make it part of the Adelaide Oval legend, to go with the Victor Richardson gates, and the statues outside of the ground. Those goals were as magic as Mods' mark at Football Park. Some of the most sublime, brilliant moments ever seen at AO, or just AFL this century (as backed up by the Goal of the Year Awards).

Make it happen.

I think its a great idea but the ground has two tenants and if something like that was to happen, then there would also have to be a PAFC player acknowledged at the ground as well. Im talking as far as permanent structures.

We've ALL got to get over the "other guys" aspect of this. If it happens to be one of theirs who deserves such an honor, so be it.

If it makes some little underdeveloped brain cells of those who racially abused Eddie think they did the wrong thing, that's a bonus as well.

I think thats the reality, no tenant gets favoured over the other as far as marketing goes. A statue of Eddie while warranted still only sits well with 50% of the stake holder. Plus you cant have the statue blocking the view so it really only leaves placement away from the boundary fence.

Look I dont care, but you are going to be sorely disappointed if thats the argument you think that would get a Betts statue across the line unopposed.

Might even up the umpiring stuff we cop

Place it near the fence as close as possible, as far around the pocket as possible.

Lack of a view shouldn't be that big a deal. The recognition should be the big deal, and he deserves it.

Look man, you wanted feedback, your idea has a lot of flaws. Arguing blocking the view of a group of supporters isnt a big deal isnt going to win this one for you.

If there's no plinth, it's just the exactly same as a normal Joe standing there in the crowd.

But you are the one asking people to give up their view of the ground. So as I said, if you want to see how realistic it is, go and do the betts pose yourself, back yourself in and see if its a winner.
