Dunstan was starting to play the football promised early in his career just as we cut him. He is a player who was unlucky with his career he had a few injury interrupted seasons and Richo wanted players who could run end to end with the play. As a pure inside on baller at the right club he probably has a decent career.

A big part of footy is landing in the right place at the right time. These guys had no-one to help guide them and terrible career planning done for them. Billings and Dunstan probably both have much better careers if they'd laded somewhere else. We put too much pressure on them too early with zero help. They were not starts but also had their confidence and enjoyment crushed.
Dunny is probably a victim of our zero development environment at that time. Had he just improved his disposal to an AFL average he would have made it much further. I still feel a bit sad about how it ended for him, he flew the flag with more heart than anyone at the time.

Was not cut, walked out, trashed the coach and club in public, and effectively ended his own career, nobody would touch him, was picked up by Melbourne as depth who had just won or was about to win the flag with one of the best midfield of that time.

You make your own luck, and you reap what you sow. He sunk himself.

Ratts ****ed that relationship. Probably one of the worst handled exits from any player from any club ever. He shouldn't have burned his bridges but he must have been really pissed off to end up in that situation.

Extraordinarily mishandled from a publicity point of view and embarrassing for the coaches and list management. We lost a player who was one of the form players of our side at the time for nothing with him saying that he'd rather go work as carpenter than ever go back to St Kilda.

That's about as badly handled as you'll see an exit and probably would have cost us recruiting players if Ratts had stayed.

Yet only 1 other club wanted him. I doubt anyone in list management was embarrassed since his lack of career afterwards proved they were correct in their call.

I orderd some timber from Bowens on Monday and they told me it would be ready for pickup Wednesday afternoon. Turns out it didn't come in until this morning.
I don't think the lady who took my order on Monday was bullshitting me. I actually think it just took a day longer than the ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL.

Naa mate. I know her. She lies all the time. Told my mate she'd set him up with her hot sister. When he turned up it was her with a wig on. Check your credit card. She''s probably half way to Bali on your dime.

And why the need to shout it’s all good

😂 😂 😂

Crikey I disagree with painting Ratten as hard done by in any way. He was Richo Mk II. Lack of discipline throughout the club and perplexing recruitment was as bad under him as it was under Richo.
Spot on, Leap of Faith. Then there’s the business of Battle joining the Hawks. If anyone believes he didn’t play a part in that then I have a bridge to sell them.

The Hawks are setting the example when it comes to former players and coaches undermining other clubs they’ve been involved at.

Roughead, the phantom ankle breaker, would’ve also joined in getting Battle, and now Mitchell looks like snaring Oscar Allen from the WCE. The rumors today suggest Hawthorn is also after Harley Reid!

We managed to snare a handy player in Max Hall from under their noses at Box Hill. Let’s retaliate for Battle. We have a war chest. I wonder who’s coming out of contract, or will be a R/FA come year’s end at the smug and happy team at Hawthorn?

I agree, Dunstan wasn't pissed he wasn't in the team, he was pissed with the mixed messaging and ****ery from our coaches. I reckon he was told if he did x then he would be in the starting 22, so he did x but was still out of the team (he was dominating the VFL), then when he finally made the squad he was already pissed and had no trust in the coaches. I know Im ride or die for lyon but I reckon RTB would have handled it better, been more honest in his feedback and set more realistic expectations.

Pure speculation of course but Luke didn't strike me as a general petulant woe is me type prior to his unsavoury departure

I got from that exchange is that Enright knows his current limitations and hadn't got a huge ego telling him he can fix everything wrong.
He seems clear eyed about responsibility and when it is right for the boss to take it hands on.
Sounds like a good lieutenant who will get promoted once ready, but is willing to be a sponge and learn from the general.

We don’t even know that Boris covets the job. He may end up as a Leigh Tudor type as a career “lieutenant”. I’m just happy to have him on our side and RTB as the “general”. All will be revealed in the fullness of time.

Carlisle was one I thought Ratts handled poorly
Moving him to full forward 5 minutes into the last quarter still keeps me up at night.
Getting smashed all game, no changes. 5 minutes into the last quarter and it's time Carlisle goes to full forward

Almost worked once.

Battle went to Hawthorn in spite of Ratten being there.
Battle almost walked because of Ratten the previous contract.

Trav is the solid 150+ game player choice and Tauru is the sizzle. He's higher risk but of it comes off he's going to be something special. He's got the intangible X-factor stuff in spades. They don't always pay-off but when they do you get the stars the game.

If that was the case, JB, my source tells me they’ve kissed and made up. Why would he go to a club where his old nemesis held a senior position? Not everyone at a club is in love with everyone else. Part of his transfer must have involved addressing any issues between the two.

May have made up prior to the contract as he did sign while Ratten still was at the Saints.
Just reporting what I was told. They say a week is a long time in football. A couple of years a lifetime.
Anyway even if he doesn't have much time for Ratten, he is only an assistant. Like Bolton may be better assistant than head coach.

We've been writing and rewriting history on this bloke just remember he was here for 7 years and was worse at the end than at the beginning. His game in the end was his downfall.

The only time I've read that he was told the messaging from the coaches was mixed was when he played in the VFL, he complained to Kingsley about what he was being asked to do by the AFL coaches and Kingsley told him to just do what he wanted and Ratten would have to select him by weight of numbers. When he came back to the firsts he just continued doing what he wanted with horrible results.

Ok, look that is down to the coaches that is bad messaging and should result in the sacking of Kingsley, but the other side is that I have never heard any poster on bigfooty talk about the responsibility of all players to themselves, the club and their team mates. I've also never heard any public statement from the cub trashing him nor any public comment from Luke taking any responsibility for his career.

I would have hated plying with Luke and have played with guys with similar attitudes, to never listen to the coach except when they told the player exactly what they wanted to hear, the skills, the decision making, the unwillingness to play to a game plan, to run in both directions to even try to run in both directions. When we saw what Geary did, what Steele does, what Windhager does, week in week out. I don't want to see Luke Dunstan type at the club ever again. Before anyone says that he bled Red White and Black the only evidence for that is him crying after a loss. Never in the leadership group. Only finished once in the top 10 in the b&f. 8th in 2019.

He may have started as little more than a boy but he was an adult he played and trained lazy and selfish.
My lasting memories of Luke are him bursting into space with mung kicks that either go to the opposition or along the ground, the handballs backwards 2m to a team mate under even more pressure, and the standing with his hands on his hips while the opposition run away with the ball contest after contest game after game.

If you want to remember something else good luck to you. Just remember the money he got paid to be a poor footballer in a poor team, he's not a victim.

I think you’ll all be suitably impressed by the Viking when he starts playing senior football. The kid has got it and I base that on watching him live 6 times last year.

I know it’s only U/18s but compared to others in his year he was a standout. He was clearly the best tall/key position type out there. I’m not saying he’s as good as Roo, but he is definitely Roo-like in the way he goes about it.

Mrs. Godot reckons he’s better, but she knows nothing about football and showed little interest until she slapped eyes on him last year at an U/18s game. Her sudden interest in the Saints and her unexpected willingness to use her Country Membership for the first time in 10 years has made me a little suspicious. Seriously, he should become a gun.

Dow almost certainly had something sewn inside his knee to get an internal infection. King multiple goes at the same knee. I'd be looking for another surgeon and have the training services under review myself but then I'm a perfectionist who wants things done properly and to see our players on the field.
Pretty hard to get something sewn inside your knee BEFORE you have an operation.

Dow picked up an infection because of blisters on his feet.
