Sam Mitchell did come to Perth, and did meet with Oscar Allen for a coffee. Allen and
@WestCoastEagles
are yet to agree on a new deal for 2026 and beyond - with offers on table from other clubs - including Hawthorn - significantly stronger. Like WC playing golf with Chad Warner, these types of meetings are fairly common in footy these days. Helps players make informed decisions on their future. Optics difficult to digest for supporters at times - but it’s how the AFL business works in 2025.
Can Rhino stop being so reasonable and balanced and just let us melt?

Its not even close to comparable though. Warner met with us before the season began. Oscar is meeting with clubs after being WOG in a big loss 2 days before

Believing the 2 are comparable just shows how weak we as fans have become

To me this is a bit of a cultural issue right now. If he is known by the club to have met with Hawthorn then he should be stripped of the captaincy and receive a 2 week club imposed suspension. He has plenty of time to do this stuff in the off season....

Time to stop being weak pushovers
He met with his former coach and friend.

You can't stop that, and they wouldn't have been sitting at a cafe having a coffee talking contracts, that would happen regardless of meeting in person all through his manager.

Yeah let’s strip him of the captaincy and drop him for 3 weeks that will send a message.

Meanwhile our club talking to other potential off season prospects that are coming out of Contract from other clubs.

“ come over to West Coast we are really supportive of all of our players”

Just maybe Allen wasn’t thinking about exploring other options until a less than satisfactory contract was put in front of him from his point of view. We have no idea what’s actually going on behind the scenes.

.

Perhaps our offer is clearly shorter and perhaps his Managment are smelling that we aren't really putting our best foot forward. The club may be interested in the pick and may be dragging their heels negotiating.
I reckon that TB could sense that and I think perhaps Oscar is in the same boat. You could tell how sincere someone is negotiating by their actions and perhaps ours are clear that we would rather you see what you can get and we look at another high pick.

Be so weird seeing Oscar and TB book ends for the Hawks.

But I'm in the "we need top end picks" camp so if he wants to go then fair enough

We’ve become so unaccustomed as WC fans to seeing former players in new teams.

Hell we still haven’t gotten over my Willie in a port jumper.

Other team supporters will have had to deal with seeing so many former players in other team colours. It’s quite a foreign concept for us

Shipping Oscar off seems like a panic move. We have a pretty elite forward set-up with Allen and Waterman, with a potentially elite future set-up with A. Reid and Shanahan. But they are not guarantees and knee-capping yourself in one area to improve yourself in another doesn't make sense. There's some positive signs in Reid and Hewett, getting Warner improves our midfield instantly, plus we have our new draftees in Gross, Davis and Hall, and early picks this year. There's also potential moneyball trades. There was plenty of optimism after last year's draft, three losses against tough opposition doesn't change things that much.

sure. just like Reid happens to have sat next to Mitchell and just happens that a reporter took a photo.

I wouldn't underestimate that it's all been staged to destabilise the situation. And we are right there for the picking unfortunately given years of poor recruitment and development. not to mention dishing out poor contracts to shite players (3 years for Petrucelle - come on).

whenever there is a change, there are those that won't like it. it doesn't mean its wrong thing to do.

giving him a 6 year contract is a panic move.

I've provided you the AFL's own statement, which says age is a factor.

Every trade 'expert' in the media references it when discussing compo.

You can refuse to believe it all you want but it's right there, in plain writing.

Money and age are the 2 main factors, not the length.
The length of the contract is part of the money component so length of contract does count.

I'd like to see the club lead the industry here and just come out and make an announcement that Oscar is leaving under free agency at the end of the year, to a club to be determined by him, and then explain how the rest of the season will pan out.

Will he retain the captaincy or hand it over to someone else?

Will he continue to play or will he sit out the rest of the reason like Tom Barrass did?

Just get in front of media, it's the speculation that kills it. Ordinarily it would be fine to play ducks and drakes in a situation like this and just pretend that the club has an offer in front of Oscar and maybe he's going to sign on still. But he has not signed on for what, 12 months this has been discussed? and he's been sprung meeting with a senior coach within 24 hours of after arguably the worst performance of his career.

At what point does everyone just get sick of pretending? It's a modern game, have the stones to just tell it like it is and let Oscar deal with the situation he finds himself in with the benefit of not having to go through the charades.

Yep. This is a very rare opportunity for us to play the game everyone else has been playing for years. We're a better side with Oscar now but are we a better side with Oscar when we're competing for a flag? I love Oscar but I'm taking a free pick 2 or pick 3 every day of the week.

Yeah the sort of message this send to the fans and playing group is not a good one. Meeting with opposition coaches when we’re already in the firing line, and trying to build a bit of positivity around the club, is a terrible move.

Offseason is free game but like you say, mid season, after the game he’s just played. Read the room Oscar

I heard Mini suggested Oscar meet the Hawks in the derby debrief.

It clearly demonstrated his head is not in the leadership space.

Every club does it, if they say they don't they are lying.
No idea whatsoever.

I want Oscar to stay 100%, but I am open to him leaving if we get band 1 comp and that is just after our pick 2 or 3.
Not ideal, but if it lands Warner with 1 of those picks and a bit more out and a bit more in.

Our compo for Oscar to Sydney our F1st and Sydney's 1st I can possibly live with that.

So pick 4 to Sydney and our F1st(5) and Sydney's 1st(13) back and maybe something future back from Sydney.

Leaves WC with Warner, our 1st pick 3, Sydney's 1st pick 13 and Hawks 1st pick 16 and all our 2nd rounders WC & Hawks 2nd and 3rd.

It leaves us with a bounty to draft the best midfielder with pick 3, Warner, package up something if there is another mid in the top 10 we want and also get the best KDEF option in the draft by using 2nd round picks to trade up for someone like Curtin if he is the 1 we need.

Leaves 2026 without just our 1st round pick and maybe something in the 3rd round back from Sydney.

If this is what plays out I would actually use our draft capital and salary cap to trade in another B grade mid from a top side to help around the ball and be here for the next 8 years.
