Autopsy Crows hammer Saints by 63 in round 1

A full strength North got beaten by a Bulldogs team more understrength than us, but you keep building them.up.

They also got a whole bunch of free draft picks which they used to pick up good kids and trade for some experience.
With the legups they got, like Hold Coast they should be dominant.
When do we get the leg ups? The free NGA's or our CEO hoes to the AFL and grants their ex club a bunch of free draft picks because they purposely destroyed their list.
You compare our drafting with theirs while we have one hand tied behind our backs.

North are getting more out put and production from their early picks then we have got from 2012 to 2017.
Xerri, Sheezle, LDU, Wardlaw, Powell and O'Sullivan is far superior to anything we have had since 2010
It's only a matter of time and getting games into their players.
Our midfield is sub par and it shows
Adelaide ran rings around our midfield it was too easy.
We have on potential A grade mid Pou
North has 5.

He should have to wear the no contact cap so no one gives him the ball and be used as a tagger. Let Windy play his defensive mid role. At least he still has potential. Steele has played half a good season in about 4 years. He’s gone from placing in the Brownlow to being brown pants at any sign of a contest.
No idea what happened to this bloke but he is gone.

Lost some weight, but all his explosiveness disappeared with it. Noticeably slower and weaker in the contest. Happened almost overnight when he dropped the 5kg.

You can't keep blaming the AFL for our issues.

Ten goals between Ben King and Ben Long, one player we had and let go .... the other we should have had.

Suns are making their own destiny, I for one am sick of the moaning and constant emails with excuses after round 4.

My only respite this year is watching our ex-players play well at other clubs.

At least it was only the 4th biggest flogging of the round....

Seriously though, it was a tough watch. The thing that struck me (out of a lot of issues) was how much better structured they were at stoppages, like they seemed to be better set up both behind and in front of the rucks so regardless of where the taps went they just used the ball better.

We did ok in clearances but sooo much of it seemed to end up 'flick handball backwards, receiver runs sideways for 5m then kicks blindly across the body' for an ineffective F50 entry or ineffective kick to half forward.

It's a bit silly singling players out but Clark was such a disappointment to watch. There was a play in the (4th I think) where he got up for a mark on the wing and couldn't quite hold on (there was a fairly clean spoil from behind); ball spilled to the wing where a Crows play got it and he did not chase at all, absolutely pulled up and decided to just casually jog in a defensive direction. When you've really only just come on that kind of conditioning is inexcusable.

At least the commentators noted several times that we had 7 best-22 players missing (and I think with the exception of opinions re: Butler's current form that's accurate); you could have said effectively 8 since Marshall was obviously seriously hampered most of the game.

All of our players have dropped size, we look weak.

I don't know what the strength and conditioning team have been doing. We had it right in 2023 and from then on its gone to shit. Mids have no power, forwards all looked weak as well. Caminiti has 2 pre-seasons under his belt and hasn't put on any real size.

I wonder how many goals we conceded from tackles not sticking and the ball getting out to a free crows player.

Are you talking about Max King or Tauru? or both.

We have taken another massive gamble on a injured player with our first round draft pick. Then we compare him to a star ex-player just because he has blonde hair.

Didn't work out last time so lets roll the dice again.

IMHO, that was the weakest Saints team to play a first round for 45 years.

Drafting injured players is not the issue - we took McCartin over an injured Petracca and look how that panned out…

Watching that video makes me so depressed

Prime Steele
Dynamic Clark & Coffield combo
Lonie electric
King dominant in the air
Gresham kicking goals

All gone

The way Dunstan wanted to quit rather than return suggests Ratts might have had a few relationship issues.
I thought Dunstan wanted to go on? He was getting some good numbers at the very end there.

I don’t know the inner story for either of these guys. I wasn’t following the Saints much until late in their careers, but the impression I got was that both players seemed to have a disconnect somewhere…

Dunstan
Was getting high numbers when he made it back at the end for us, and I thought he’d go on on that basis. He wasn’t an elite kick or particularly quick from what I could see. Anyway, Richo picked him up for Melbourne (does that mean he was good? Or Ratten bad? I don’t necessarily think so) Dunstan managed 5 games for them in ‘22, late season when they had injuries. Then he played exclusively in the seconds for Casey in ‘23 before doing an ACL. He was 28, played his last AFL game at 27.

Long
Was explosive and had skills but all I remember, coming in late as it were, was the occasional cameo as a forward, a defender and in both cases frequently giving away costly free kicks or having very quiet days. He had a 12/13 possession game it was a good one. When used as a forward he got the monicker of a ‘defensive forward’ whatever that means. To me it means ‘second to the ball but good with a tackle’ and can win a holding the ball decision and kick a goal, but not a play maker.

I think Richo was too soft on ‘em, thus extending their careers, and then Ratts tried to ‘correct’ them, and by this time it was just Not gonna happen. Long didn’t play a lot at Gold Coast in his first year but ironically, after saying he wanted to play defence, is a very handy forward -it seems - up there.

What affect on the players psyche do you think getting flogged in your first game of AFL has?

Just imagine you get all your family and friends there to watch your first game and your new team is not even competitive. But they have to keep telling themseves and family Moorabbin is a great place to be.

Why is our membership team calling fans and flogging raffle tickets the Monday after a flogging?????
Because the club needs money and support from its members to get ourselves out of this shit show in the long term. If you’re going to pot them for trying to get ahead then don’t complain when we’re still stuck in the same position in 10 years time.

Petracca wasn't injured pre-draft. He was the clear stand out best player but we chose to take the undersized, unathletic forward with diabetes because Tom Boyd just signed a big contract

Hahahahah **** me some people will find any way possible to be negative.

It’s called gratitude, the young blokes would be thrilled to live out their childhood dream, thrashing or not.
It’s reward for a life of hard work, and sacrifice from both they and their families.

You honestly reckon they’re coming from the field saying ‘gee I wish St Kilda didn’t draft me’. You’re having a lend mate

Having followed the Saints for a very long long time, I've heard it all before. I was really pis$ed off at the lack of effort and leadership by the more experienced players yet again- Lyon put it nicely saying these guys had a bad day or whatever- I hope they decide to have good days occasionally!.
Our best player according to stats was a mature age recruit in his first game with us. Also very annoyed to think that Lyon and his crew had the entire offseason to get a list fit and firing for Round 1, but it looks like they were over-worked and broken beforehand. Some of our defensive structures and setups were lacking- the coach can take some blame for yesterday.

In an order of AFL Fantasy points.
1: Nas. 113. A goal, 27 Posessions, decent metre's gained. ( 571 )
2: Macrae 109. 34 Disposals ( 23 contested ), 12 clearances, 5 tackles. 7 Score involvements.
3: Wilson 97 . 23 Disposals , 535 Meters gained.

4: Sinclair 90. 22 Disposals, not a remarkable game by his standards.
5: Wilkie 87. 19 Disposals, i thought he did well.
6: Hall 82. 16 Disposals and 2 goals. 6 Score involvements. Great for a first gamer.
7: Wood 77. 15 Disposals and 2 goals. 7 Score involvements.
8: Steele. 77. 19 Disposals, 6 Tackles, 5 Clearances. One of the better players, but well below his best.
9: Windhager 72. 19 Disposals 5 Clearances, hard at it.
10: Boyd 68. 27 Hitouts, 6 to advantage. A better option than Campbell, but not as good as having Roma in the ruck.

11: Marshall 64. Having him in the forward line didn't achieve much.
12: Byrnes 62. 17 disposals. I didn't like him in the backline, we should have moved Hill there.
13: Garcia 59. 18 touches and 5 clearances. Didn't mind him, but not a match winner.
14: Arie 56. Did good things at times, but still very nooby.
15: Higgins 56, 2 goals.

16: Caminiti 53. Tried hard , didn't achieve much.
17: Hastie 40. I hardly sighted him. Not much TOG.
18: Webster.34 10 disposals. Not sure that he was overly bad, doing a lot of dour defenseish stuff.
19: Jones 34 :Lots of pressure acts and not much else. Garcia and Wilson had more pressure acts and did other stuff too.
20: O'Connell 29: Was he playing a dour game, i didn't sight him much.
21: Cordy 26: Cordy being Cordy.
22: Hill WTF?
23: Clark Not an impact sub.

We were a team of youth, and its not surprising that we didn't get much from some of the young players. Its therefore all the more disappointing when we see the results of Hill and Jones.

Getting rid of 20-40 game players doesn't change the picture much tbh - makes it worse if anything.

Crows 10: Rankine, Cumming, Sholl, Hinge, Soligo, Rachele, Murray, Thilthorpe, Peatling, Michalanney

Saints 4: Clark, Wanganeen-Milera, Byrnes, Windhager

Have a look at those two groups and tell me that's not where their advantage came from.

Yeah I see far better players in the Crows list. Nothing to do with how many games they've played

Crows had Rory Laird with 24 effective disposals and Matt Crouch with 22.
They had 11 players who had 15 to 24 effective disposals.

We had 2.
Macrae, with 21 and Steele with 15.

Arie had more "effective disposals" than Wilson or Garcia.
