Get real. Finals wins should be included in the McClelland Trophy. Everyone knows Brisbane were the best club of 2023. Runner up in the men’s, Premiers in the women’s.
If it’s going to be home and away season results only, the only relevant thing about the award is the $1 million prize money.
Behind the four walls, it would be a joke, the Demons would be loving the million dollars but they would all know which clubs results they would have preferred in 2023.
The awarding of the McClelland Trophy has never, ever, included finals games.

Correct but it never, ever included money either.
Good luck to the Dees for winning the big dollars on offer this year.
However, if the AFL want to keep this very compromised new format it should revert back to a trophy.
The mens premiership already comes with a big cash prize.
In my opinion the McClelland trophy money would be better spent if say $500k went to each of the VFL and AFLW premiership teams.

Im a big advocate of no whistle advantage call. And use the whistle only to stop play.
You're actually adding more complication to the rule with this. If you can still touch the ball to make it a point, then how far does the ball have to travel before it counts as touched, and not just touched off the boot?
Or is it any touch at all and its still a goal? Defenders on the goal line have to keep the ball in play?
What happens if a teammate touches it with his hand? What about if the kicks missing but a teammate palms the ball through the goal?
You can't block a ruckman from being involved in the ruck contest. But you can block the run of other players around the contest. How do you know who the ruckman is?
Even with the ruck nomination teams were being sneaky to get free kicks, with unusual ruck options at stoppages around the ground.
Make it goal square only. Done
Insufficient intent. Tell me how grabbing a ball and running over the line or being tackled over the line despite having prior opportunity is a sufficient attempt to keep the ball in? You could approach your run in an arc or parallel to the line or attempt to punch the ball backwards or get rid of it before being tackled or bumped. But lets penalise a kick down the line whilst under pressure and no time to be able to direct the ball inwards.

Item 1. Removes a vital part of the game, discourages players defending the kick.
Item 2. Last touch stops players playing to a position, encourages defensive play. They need to go the other way (relaxing the rule), which then returns the game to a semblance of positions.
Item 3. They try to. The issue is the umps are encouraged to guess on when a player has exaggerated contact, which opens up a whole new can of worms.
Agree on point 4. Sliding in isn't overly dangerous, but the hip drop tackle is dirty as hell

I disagree here - defending the kick with a smother that actually impedes the ball will still be worthwhile.
For marks I'd just go with the loose interpretation we have had for decades - has to be a reasonable touch to count.
For goals, I think touched off the boot reviews are a scourge on our game. I mean you weren't good enough to really impede the ball in any meaningful way.
I still like players diving to touch the ball before it goes through for a goal though. Perhaps for goals, touched only matters from with the goal square. It might bring in some grey areas around rushed/rebounding off body and stuff but as a general principle its worth looking at. Too many great moments ruined (and time wasted) because someone got a fingernail on an otherwise good goal.
Good points. Similar to the 'no mark for backwards kick' rule - you need to think ahead as to how it will change the structure of where players go, it isn't always good.

I have been banging on about it since they started cracking down on it.
Look back to the 2008 grand final as the last game which had the perfect balance in the game. Players mostly kept to positions, which allowed midfielders to run through the corridor and link handballs. It was exciting play.
If it ended on the outside you had skilful players using the ball and breaking lines with smart and powerful kicks.
Then they started being harder on out of bounds so teams started congesting the corridor. Then in their infinite wisdom, they decided to relax penalising holding the ball, so the FF and CHF started to push further up.
Make it happen we wouldn't want any more people losing sleep over the Tigers, lets be honest its another rubbish rule brought in by SHocking to stop our dominance, it can go now while we ready ourselves for our next dynasty.
