How does the signs not being very good for him square with him being the standout in training? Perhaps the coaches thought his ceiling was higher as a wing than an inside mid, and he's proving them right so far.
It would be pretty cruel interviewing him and giving him so much media attention if he was as far back as some are saying.
They didn't say he was a standout in 3km time trials (which he wasn't anyway, that was Harry Sharp), they said he was a standout in training, specifically with skills.A stand out in 3k time trials doesn’t necessarily flow to a stand out in game play. Yes he’s improved his fitness granted but on game sense and football skills he’s behind quite few others.

Consensus opinion from where?Seems to be close to a consensus opinion as well so there's something there
I must admit, many times over the years the club has come out and said something 'positive' about a player (as you rightly pointed out about Skinner last year) in much the same vein as they have about Ely Smith and IMO, it is to be taken with a grain of salt because often times it is merely akin to an 'encouragement award' for the work a player has put in, in an attempt to improve. Doesn't mean that player is any closer to a senior call up than they were before.Consensus opinion from where?
There’s been one article out of the club.
As pointed out previously. Very similar articles from the club said the same about Sam Skinner last preseason
Starce was all the talk last year and he had a pretty good year.Consensus opinion from where?

If I were to say my prospects most likely from the Lions to make it Ely wouldn't feature highly on the list but let's not pretend there hasn't been hundreds of players that have seemed middling at best that suddenly belong when they hit a higher level. Weird phenomenon but certainly not rare. I'm prepared to see a few AFL games before I write him off. He'll get at least two before he's ticked off.
i recall Sam Skinner getting a bit of internal media last year, especially the Tassie camp and early part of the season to then become a regular emergency and then delisted. If I was a young bloke who was not secured in the best 24-27, I would not read too much into the internal media. I could be wrong but think Ben Keays got similar exposure before being delisted. Good to see he has a gig at Crows and hopefully Sam at Kangaroos. It would be pretty cruel interviewing him and giving him so much media attention if he was as far back as some are saying.
One game does not make a season, and I am not suggesting their spots are in danger, but I was disappointed in both Lyons and Berry in last years Prelim. Lyons cannot kick 50 meters, did not even attempt a shot in the first Q, and he and Berry looked out of sorts. Pressure will come on Robinson this year.True, I just have a feeling that if E.Smith doesn't play a lot of games this year, I wouldn't be shocked if he asks for a trade to another club for more opportunities such as North Melbourne for example given the go home factor and Noble connection or another VIC club.
Tbh not to hate the guy by any stretch, but if any of Neale, Lyons, J.Berry or others get injured, I would rather want Roberston lining up for us in the lineup as he seems like a more-ready player then E.Smith. If any of the wingers went down though, I consider putting him in if he improves at that position but then at the same time, there are so many players in our squad these days that are flexible these days in playing that position quite well short-term if needed in the future, such as Bailey, T.Berry, K.Coleman, Starcevich, Cockatoo, Answerth & Sharp.
If I was one of the coaches at our club looking at our midfield class from the list we have currently, I would be ranking the best players on quality like this so far:
(AFL Lineup)
Neale
Lyons
McCluggage
Zorko
J.Berry
Robinson
_________________
(Reserve Lineup)
Roberston
C. Ellis-Yolman
Mathieson
Joyce
Smith
Sharp
etc.
Add in rotation players who can do a serviceable job in the best 22 midfield (Rayner, Cameron, Bailey, McCarthy, Starcevich, K.Coleman, Cockatoo), it would be a hell of a midfield to break into that short-term. However, injuries could happen anytime as we know and players like E.Smith, Joyce & Roberston can make their positions in the midfield for their own. It's better to have depth in your squad then none at all like the past years showed us![]()

Both played forward, on opposite teams, in the scratch match I watched.Question to training watchers - Is Coleman is being trained with our defense at all..
he's pretty calm and takes good decisions through traffic. Might be a good option in defense eventually.
Maybe go back and read the article on this pre-season's training.Maybe go back and listen again. They said he had improved his running and slimmed down in order to go after a wing spot. No mention of skills at all, not a word on this.
Who's flying?
Third-year midfielder Ely Smith (pictured below) has been the standout, according to teammates. After arriving as a big-bodied midfielder, he has transformed his body shape and become a leading runner and a contender for a wing role. His skills have been sharp.
He did play in the senior team though, and didn't impress. If Ely gets a run, doesn't look good and then gets traded away I won't be annoyed, it's only if he never gets a chance after being talked up that I'd be annoyed.i recall Sam Skinner getting a bit of internal media last year, especially the Tassie camp and early part of the season to then become a regular emergency and then delisted.

Paywalled, can you give a short summary?Nakia Cockatoo looks like he is performing well at training and looks to be in the frame for debut for us in R1 barring any injury.
Does anyone have paywall to copy & paste what the article actually says?
