Scoop McClure going with Maric has met with Collingwood. Surely for coaching. Although they'll likely lose Witts.

I'm hoping it's smoke and shadows behind windows to distract everyone from a brilliant coup that is going to be revealed between now and trade week.Dal Santo now this. lol.
If it is a sneaky way to get a specialist ruck development coach and have it on the rookie list rather than in our footy department spending cap, with the added bonus that is all else fails, he could be a desperate-times option as the third string ruckman on the list, I suppose I could come at it.Will be good for culture. Much loved by the group at Tigerland. Heart and Soul bloke.
Free back up and some coaching. Would be a good get.

Sounds like he'll be somewhere next year as seems rated with leadership qualities.Ralph saying Richmond

Between this and the Mayne rumour, I'm not enjoying this post-season much at the moment. Would rather draft a rookie than either option.
Buckley has stated if he doesn't make finals next year he wont have a job. Maric, Dal Santo, Mayne? Is he throwing all his eggs into one basket to get another contract?

Not really sure why the Pies would want or need any of them TBH.
Maric is more a coach/backup role.
Dal Santo and Mayne...Well, are they, currently, better than the 21st and 22nd players you'd pick? And even if you back your own player sin there, would they still be better after even a normal injury run?
Maric I can kind of understand, on further thought. Would rather just keep Witts though, if possible.
I'm assuming that as both Dal Santo and Mayne would be coming off seasons where they played 21/23 games and 22/22 games respectively, and were best 22, even best 18 at their clubs, that they wouldn't be coming across just to play VFL or play for minimum chips. I'd prefer just to play and develop a younger player if injuries were to affect the best 22 in that case. Really though, with the salary cap space we have available, plus a few tradeable pieces, I'd like to think we could actually get players who will actually improve the side in areas of need, before going for an ageing outside midfielder and a defensive forward.
Pies pushing hard to go for the VFL flag next year.
Long term Vs short term view.
Buckley's job is gone if he doesn't make finals this year, so he's going short term.
(if he is in fact chasing all these guys).
I don't see why he'd suddenly change tack at this point, when sticking to the course and having a good run with injuries will probably see the Pies improve and possibly be in contention for the bottom half of the 8 next year as it is.
I feel like loading up on these types of players is the path to mediocrity, both next year and beyond. Even if recruiting these older players did somehow "saves his job", then it'll probably cause the club to go backwards the following year, a la Richmond this year. It's not the way to ensure success for either himself or the club.
Can't get ultimate success for himself unless he's still there, and doing this makes it more likely.
If they're a 70% chance of finals next year anyway, but 80% with these top ups, then it makes him that much more likely to be coaching next year.
Of course, the experience, leadership and teaching of their teammates they bring will be the parts the PR machine will focus on.
