BRISBANE, Gold Coast and two GWS sides will take part in the first Winter Series, designed to develop current and future AFLW players during the off-season.

Each team will play each other once over a five-week period, with the first two matches to be played on Saturday in Sydney.

GWS will field two sides, Southern Giants (coached by Anthony Bourke) and Northern Giants (coached by Roger Moten).

The Southern Giants will be made up of players from AFL Canberra, AFL Riverina, Tallangatta and District Football League, Goulburn Valley Football League and the Ovens & Murray Football League.

Giants AFLW midfielders Britt Tully and Jodie Hicks will also be in the line-up.

The Northern Giants has players from AFL Sydney and the Black Diamond League, as well as current AFLW Giants Ellie Brush, Alicia Eva, Nicola Barr, Erin McKinnon, Louise Stephenson, Jacinda Barclay and Phoebe Monahan.

Brisbane has priority access to its 2018 AFLW players ahead of Gold Coast, with new recruit Lauren Arnell not waiting around to represent her team, turning heads at her first training session just two days after signing.

The side will also be filled out with players from the Lions Academy, and will be coached by AFLW assistants Daniel Merrett, Brent Staker, David Lake and John Taylor.

Gold Coast may not be joining the AFLW until 2020, but it is starting its preparation well ahead of time.

The Suns held numerous talent identification days around the state during the first few months of the year, with players then selected for the Suns Academy, led by former Queensland under-18s youth girls coach Michael Gugliotta.

Players from the Academy will represent the Suns in the Winter Series.

The Brisbane team in this looks really strong. Would actually be an interesting match between them and NT Thunder if that could have happened.

The good news for other teams is, if they can be half competitive, then it probably means they have turned up some real draft worthy players.

Good for the whole comp long term.

This result just highlights what some of us have been banging on about, and it is upwards and onwards from here for Southern NSW.

This article lists the NSW Women in the Eastern Allies Squad, which will have some Tassie women as well. Their Selections not announced yet.
Looking at the locations represented they cover the whole State, which is a sign of the talent being spread around, and they will play in the second phase of the Champs.
