The only reason people are in Perth city these days is

1. they work/live there
2. Friday/Saturday night on the way to Northbridge
3. If there is a random show/event that is in the city.
4. they are homeless

There is no longer a need to go into town. most of the major stores can be found in other larger suburbs further out. Also with the way Perth suburbs are growing, its becoming more of a hike to get into town. Another factor is the growth in telecommunications. no longer do you need to attend a head office of a company, or go to the main branch. Most major companies can sort out your issues over the phone, or even online. Add in online shopping with postage costs that are cheaper than travel costs into the city, and either the time spent trying to get public transport, or car parking costs. In my view, the idea of the Perth city as we knew it started to fade in the mid 90's as urban sprawl and the internet took effect, it has now been replaced with larger urban centres such as victoria park, cannington, booragoon etc.

I lived in Sydney for 8 years and there was a real buzz to the city. I feel like Perth is getting that back slowly. I think Basil Zempilas taking over as Perth mayor has helped a bit. (dont really like his personality that much ) Elizabeth Quay is beautiful at night, St Georges Terrace is picking up the buzz, Bell Tower is now one of Perths unique monuments, having ECU in the city also helps create that real city feel, Perth Wildcats playing at Perth Arena............there is also seems to be something happening in Yagan Square. Think every Fridays there is the Food markets. The thing it has different to say a Melbourne, is the MCG and Docklands are right in the hub of the city (including Crown), maybe they should build a 2nd casino in Perth, and with that it , it has to be in the city somewhere. Just a bit of food for though.

If we want Perth to grow and get better , bigger and to attract migration, you need a hustling , bustling CBD to the tourists, and backpackers.

I went to Perth city to go the state library. I also didnt mind using an internet cafe on William Street. And I love a few of the places on William Street for food.

I agree with this. We also can't keep expanding north/south out from a services and infrastructure perspective. That will long term help the existing hubs and cbd as we become more built up. Preferably public transport gets a boost but im not holding my breath.

My view is that there needs to be wholesale improvement to the CBD. We still don't have enough people living in the city for there to be a buzz of nightlife and restaurants during the week. I don't think the uni will fix that entirely but it should help a little.

What would have been nice is a few statement pieces that draw people in to the city... the bell tower while nice is inadequate, small and forgettable. Yagan has failed to live up to it's potential - how cool would it be if that statue towered over Yagan square and was visible as you approach from the north or can catch as you drive from teh freeway. Every major city has a bunch of tourist attractions that get people excited. We have amazing lifestyle but there really isn't a lot of touristy stuff to do in and around the cbd.

Eastern parts of the CBD are really run down and need some serious investment and life.

Im not sure if the WACA have this, but is there such thing as a WACA tour day? or a WACA to Perth Stadium tour ? Something that interestate/overseas tourists would be willing to pay as part of a day tour or something along those lines.

i mean living in Sydney before, they had regular daily SCG tours. (ive also done one of Marvel Stadium)

Tourists won’t go to the CBD (or East Perth) for as long as the streets are full of deranged, often aggressive homeless.

Hay Street Mall is particularly disgusting in that regard - but so are large swathes of the city.

Basil Zempilas made it a big point I think when he overtook as mayor of Perth was to change the image of the city and that included trying to get the homeless off the streets of Perth. Not sure how thats going. But probably more needs to be spent in terms of social housing etc

Alot of points about the city are mentioned by Basil (in 2019). He made it his number 1 objective when overtaking as Mayor. So for me, he is at least case in point.

To me Perth CBD is alot different to what it was in compared to 2014 , 8 years ago. The common complaint , I know Sydney is larger in population, was cab drivers in Sydney were saying 'this isnt a 24/7 city anymore". I can understand their frustration that Monday to Thursday during the day its pretty much dead over there. And the thing is people now in Sydney, are leaving in their droves. (SMH mentioned a net migration in the negative). Perth feels alive to me and I know the shops I want to go when I go to the city. Some days I choose to drive, some days I choose to train.

Wont lie to you, I didnt grow up in the Western suburbs of Perth but now live there. I don't think even at my age i feel quite connected with the community out there.

Alot of kids that grew up in this area tend to stick with their networks even into their adults. Maybe I need to get out and about more but meh
