Regulars, Miles, Menadue, Moore, Markov, Soldo, Morris all missing. 21 yr old CEllis was our most experienced player in the midfield. Little wonder we struggled. Our mosquito fleet kept us in it.

Ventured off to Williamstown and also watched the replay. From what I saw the only players that would come into contention for a senior spot are Townsend and Rioli. Garthwaite close, Bolton and Lloyd do the odd spectacular thing but not enough for long enough. In the second half but particularly in the last quarter Richmond was thrashed in the clearances and lacked a tall marking target in their forward 50 for most of the day. Players up the ground were calling for the forwards to compete as they sometimes took the lazy option and did not contest as they should have. Like the Seniors on Friday there was an overall lack of polish particularly when going inside 50. As has been mentioned before there is a noticeable gap in standard between AFL and VFL, we were near the boundary line the whole time and that gap was evident in terms of pressure, skill etc.

Club write up only mentions CCJ Townsend and Ellis' stats.

CCJ: 17 disposals 32 hitouts 4 clearances
Townsend: 16 disposals 11 tackles 2 goals
Ellis: 28 disposals 6 clearances 7 tackles 1 goal.

Slightly different to what are credited on FootyLive app.

No coincidence given the 3 were probably our best on the day.

Townsend seemed to have his aggression back that made him such an asset at the end of last year.

He was crunching blokes every chance he got. Type of thing we missed when the big bodied Port midfield were on top.

Sounds like townso has pressed his claims , I’d give moore another game However being dropped wouldn’t surprise , make no mistake , this is a big game with a direct challenger for our spot , if I read one more post about resting players I’ll spew up

Towno was great yesterday. Importantly was holding his marks, something he hasnt been doing all year at both levels. He's in next week and it should be for Moore imo. Too important a game to worry about giving underdone players an extra game or two. We cant afford to carry any passengers next week

Only blokes that could possibly get a game
next week are Townsend and Rioli if he’s 100%. Midfielders were of pop gun vintage with no hurt , run or carry. Their link work was non existent and bc they were below speed they were reduced to stop start stop tactics.
Whereas Willy just continued to roll and roll and carry in numbers.
The mf failing threw a lot of pressure on our inexperienced BL especially 74. Hayward who was a liability.
CEllis had the responsibility of being the chief MF and was slaughtered at the stoppages, especially in the second half.
He did most of his work from the half back arc/ wing providing little i50 thrusts to our forwards.
Will remain firm that he’s an inside receiver and not a hunter and was lost without Miles feeding him. Hence his tackle count was down today bc he was trying to play Miles role without the smarts or ability. No way does he get near our senior side bc he’s slow and unaccountable when in tight. Needs space and won’t be gifted it . He should have been told to roll forward today a lot more as he looked dangerous there alongside Rioli Bolton and Stengle bc they could of dished off to him more often. Instead he was wandering defensive of centre or wing getting useless possessions with no impact. Unfortunately he wasn’t alone as the MF was badly beaten and Lloyd was in the same boat and struggled to win a hard ball.
Balta oozed class , but doesn’t warrant a spot no matter what the hype is as he’s still got a lot to learn. In knowing his space around him , when to defend or go and manning up on kick outs. His athleticism is unique which poses the question why do we need Lynch? He’s a massive prospect. CCJ appeared to have tired after ht, but is still kicking along nicely for his age.
Miller was down on the day with Baker , but their mature bodies and hardness was too much for our young ones. Was always going to be a tough day with Morris out in the BL steering the ship and Rodda was just too powerful for us. We were pretty lucky as his kicking with a few others let us of the hook and the scoreboard at 3/4 time was flattering for us. Drummond I believe can still make it as he’s got some pace and class about him with a good brain. His match fitness is building so I hope he can get a good run to prove us that he deserves another year.
Bolton was busy and dangerous all day , but with our rushed and poor entries he could have been even better. The Tall forwards had to work just as hard bc of this and really struggled to get involved.
Welcome back Townsend today as he kept us in the game by constantly stopping their run out with immense tackling and pressure. He will walk into the side next week as he can even pinch hit in the guts.
Overall Fly had a limited side today , but probably could have thrown a Stengle in the mix or even a Rioli ( but was limited here due to the scare). We were outclassed after HT and the margin didn’t reflect their dominance, umpiring or not they simply wanted it more .
Garthwaite was good again despite their forward pressure, but I wouldn’t play him as he’s learning a game similar to Rance’s atm and shouldn’t be disrupted in it unless seriously needed. He played on a good opponent today and went with him, but will get better in the ones. I can see why the club is not rotating the big boys as much is bc they want to educate them on specific roles and long term is more important for their careers in the seniors.
Short term Winning is not as important as long term Winning in both competitions. Operation finding midfielders is the importance at seasons end as the cupboard was empty today.

stengle did enough I reckon, tackles well and has smarts

Balta could play Broads role

This. Think he would give us the same defensively and offers us more offensively with drive.
You guys are seriously underestimating Broad.

Yep left

He was really proppyNat first...then seemed fine with it and was sprinting
Then left the ground limping but came back on...so who knows

Let's hope just a mild strain...more psycho-semantic than actual physical injury
He got stepped on. No way he would have been doing all those sprints after the game if he'd strained anything.

CCJ sounds like the best ruck prospect we have had for a long time (since Ottens).
He is.

It was a beautiful if cold day down at Willy. I sat on the opposite wing to _RT_, probably about 40 metres along from TigerImposter.

Balta, Rioli and Bolton were the highlights for me. CJ very promising too. Ellis was pretty good but I agree with TI that he lacked impact inside. He lacks consistency of intensity. I would not pick him until he plays 100 ferocious minutes every week for a month. He will never be your #1 mid but some of the stuff he does is sublime. Given what we need I think he is up against it.

Lloyd was disgraceful. Drummond went MIA for an hour and a half. Towner was good. Garth is ready to go if we need him. Stengle is in a bit of a down patch (for him). His running ability will hold him back. Naish took a screamer in the first quarter but didn't do much else until the last quarter when shifted forward and got a bit of it. Miller is a baby. Baker couldn't get a touch and when he did he fumbled or turned it over.

Of the VFL-listed players, Aarts is one I would love to see get a crack somewhere. He's a terrier and super strong in the air for such a little guy.

In the first 10min of the first quarter I stood next to the interchange with a West Coburg mate, but soon told him that the visibility was poor with the sea haze and Sun setting in the West. Horrible place to have the bench so I took off to the Opposite side and stood there with a few young blokes and enjoyed watching the game withe Sun on my back.
I ventured back to temporarily in the third to see if Rioli was OK and once I realised it was a storm in a tea cup I hiked it back to the other side with the young chaps.
Whilst I was at the IC area I asked a few people I’ve known for years some questions about Rioli and they said they weren’t sure bc visibility was so poor .
They weren’t wrong.
... agree Aarts is very handy.

I've always been of the opinion that Ellis is an accumulator rather than an outright ball winner. In saying that he'll win his own footy when needed but isn't the ferocious bottom of the pack scrapper like Miles is.

I believe he has a role to play going forward and IMO it should be in the role Grigg initially played as a link up hybrid mid. In that role we'd get the ball winning ability inside and also the benefit of his foot skills outside.

Our best imo his tackling was brutal

I didn't say he was sprinting after the match, it was shortly after he got stepped on...he was limping, then a short time after he was chasing an opponent
I said he was sprinting after the match. At least a dozen sprints the length of the centre square. As did Bolton. Stengle did a few and Towner a couple.

People need to realise the step up from VFL to AFL is not bloody easy.
A seasoned campaigner like Miles who averages big numbers at VFL was exposed Friday night by the speed and heavy hitting contests. Balta and Garthwaite against Geelong is insanity.
If Astbury misses, who comes IN ?
