More medals for Australia on day 14, ultimately not the gold we were after to claim our record, but some amazing achievements nonetheless. We have more medal chances today; the Boomers arguably the biggest of the lot. Can we finally claim a major medal? And the track is set to sizzle with some huge finals, and the men’s volleyball final should be a beauty.

Highlights include:
  • Womens marathon final
  • Women’s golf round 4, Aussie Hannah Green tied for 3rd
  • Basketball gold medal game USA vs France
  • Canoe/kayaking finals
  • Volleyball men’s bronze medal match Brazil vs Argentina
  • Men’s diving 10m platform
  • Equestrian team jumping final
  • Athletics women’s high jump final (McDermott and Patterson)
  • Athletics women’s 10,000m final
  • Athletics men’s javelin final
  • Men’s basketball bronze medal match Boomers vs Slovenia
  • Soccer men’s gold medal match Brazil vs Spain
  • Athletics men’s 1500m final (McSweyn, Hoare)
  • Handball men’s gold medal match France vs Denmark
  • Volleyball men’s gold medal match France vs ROC
  • Athletics women’s and men’s 4x400m finals

Wish we were more of a force in athletics win 7 medals maybe 2-3 gold after the swimming is over be good to have a group of athletes to barrack for

This is the first time Australia has had two men, Stewart McSweyn and Oliver Hoare, in 1500m Olympic final since 1956! :clapping: I'd say Herb Elliot was one.. the other?

Known by the locals of his home town as the "King of King Island" McSweyn is ranked fifth in the world in 2021, having run a national record 3:29.51 at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco in July, while Hoare, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, qualified via a 3:33.19 run at the USATF Golden Games in May this year.
Nope Herb was in the stands watching as a 17 year old school boy.

The great John Landy - got bronze behind the Irishman Ron Delaney and think a german was 2nd. Merv Lincoln was the other Aussie but he finished last of 12.

Landy probably peaked around Vancouver 1954 Comm Games in that remarkable final against Bannister that was shown live across all of North America. After Bannister broke 4 minutes for the mile in 1954, 9 other guys did and they were all in Melbourne for the 1956 1500m (a few didn't make it to the final) and Bannister had retired and was there watching as a special correspondent for one of the UK newspapers.

Herb won 1958 Comm Games in Cardiff and then Rome in 1960. Retired shortly after Rome at 22 undefeated over the 1500m or mile over about 25 races in total.

Is there a reason why they just get given a random horse?

The modern pentathlon is based around the idea of a soldier fighting behind enemy lines - hence the fencing, shooting and using an unfamiliar horse.

Is there a reason why they just get given a random horse?

The modern Pentathlon has a historic basis. It is based upon the concept of a soldier delivering a message during a battle. The soldier has to run, swim, fight a sword battle, shoot a gun and ride a horse. For a long time it was only open to soldiers (commissioned officers, actually). A soldier in an army just gets whichever horse is available.

George Patton competed in 1912. (He claimed he got robbed during the shooting).

*EDIT*
Damn you FP!!!!!

Amazing George didn't shoot the son of a bitch who robbed him. :)

"Punch a horse in this disgusting manner" ... Please, I doubt the horse even felt it. They cop more when the rider pats them on the neck for jumping well.

Just read up on why Russia is still competing. Amazing. Massive organised doping system, the IOC still allow them to compete, and the Russians are all hurt they can’t play their national anthem :D

Most of their track and field contingent is banned but they still got off fairly lightly.

I can't understand why they appear on the medal tally if they compete as individuals

Apparently they are all unashamedly telling everyone and acting as if they are competing for Russia. Putin and all the crooks are thumping their chests.

Big “fu** you” to clean athletes.

I’ve already addressed this, competing as the ROC isn’t shameful enough.

Make them compete as West America and play YMCA when they accept their medals.

And compete under this flag.
