It looks like AFL house are changing/cracking down on the rules on tackling in response to Ginnivan's high free kicks. Selwood has done it for a decade play on. But you can't have Collingwood gaining an advantage. We can add this to the Clement rule for out positioning your opponent under the ball. And the Malthouse rule, where giving your players regular breathers on the interchange bench, became outrageous for **** knows why.

On the show before this with the drunk and the neat unoffensive guy they interviewed Brad Scott. He got asked about Ginnivan/Selwood. Scott maintains Selwood tries to stand up in the tackle and that players who drop their legs should be holding the ball. What a hypocrit! That's exactly Selwoods m/o.

It been happening for years.

1977 drawn grand final…. They ban drawn grand finals
1978 Dempsey and Moore wrestle in the goal square…. They bring in the line at the centre circle
1990 drawn QF… they ban all drawn finals
2010 Dane Swan dominate taking full advantage of the interchange…they introduce a sub rule and interchange cap.

Chris Scott will always look after his clubs interest & pretend that he is logical & unbiased. He always has a comment when one of his players gets reported & it's always to defend his player instead of the player who got whacked. I don't buy his bullshit.

Looking forward to this being applied fairly and league-wide, and not just against Ginnivan :)

I'm glad that the AFL has made a statement on it, because it does put the heat on umpires to adjudicate the rule across the comp.

Follow up statement from the AFL to provide more clarity: Collingwood got too good at something within the current rules so we stepped in

Collingwood kids had a new hero. You can't have that. Footy isn't about fun yer know.

To get clarity will be a good thing. Will allow Jack to properly readjust his focus.

There's no doubt that the umpires have been hugely inconsistent on this and that Ginnivan has been unfairly targeted.

That said, he does play for it too often and too obviously. He's a better player than that. Further, he made a rod for his own back by promoting his ability to draw the free. It's a bad look for the game, and it's not surprising the AFL would react.

Hopefully he can now move forward from this and just focus on playing.

You forgot Gayfer being effectively umpired out of the game for doing what Silvagni (and others) all did as defenders. Oh and the Jimmy Clement "hands in the back" that made Hirdy cry.....
