Tassie Takes WNCL Title In Remarkable Finish

Tassie has won its second WNCL title in amazing circumstances.

The Tigers batted first and were 3-244 and in a strong position, only to lose 7-20 to end up all out 264.

In a rain affected reply, the Scorpions entered the final over needing 4 to win (under the D/L method) with 5 wickets in hand and two set batters at the crease.

The final over then went thus:
First ball - Wicket (bowled)
Second ball - One run
Third ball - Wicket (stumped)
Fourth ball - Wicket (run out)
Fifth ball - Wicket (lbw)
Sixth ball - Wicket (run out - one run)

So that's five wickets and two runs from the last over, seeing the Tigers winning by one run.

Tassie must be wondering how they pulled off the win and the SA players must be shattered.

I invested a whole day into that and felt guilty that DLS and rain was going to give us the win.
If SA had won, they deserved to, because they dragged the match back brilliantly after we (the Tigers) were 3-244.

Well Beth Mooney just became the 2nd player to have won POTM in both a WBBL and T20 WC final.

Sarah Coyte was the first, and now she has POTM in a WNCL final to her name too. If ever there was going to be a bowler to cash in on the headless* batting of the opposition at the crunchiest stage of a tournament.

A good reminder that what England lost through the early retirement of Sarah Taylor is commensurate to what Australia lost through the even earlier retirement of Coyte. Rather fitting that SA's only WNCL title, to date, occurred back in 2015/16 when by chance the team featured both the stylish keeper-batter from England and crafty medium-pacer from New South Wales.

*A lenient description really, considering SA captain Jemma Barsby has ~270 matches of top-level domestic cricket experience, but seemingly had no calming advice for Annie O'Neil (out first ball of the last over with a wild swing) and herself (baffling decision to charge down the pitch with the keeper up at the stumps):
