It’s not contained to Dandenong either - plenty of the same battles in Monash. Waverley Blues are the result of a number of mergers... Glen Waverley Hawks were actually a new club only about 15 years ago, but fast forward and Mount Waverley are gone. Mazenod have the school which must help. Ashwood aren’t exactly a powerhouse, East Burwood have gone from being probably the strongest suburban club in Melbourne to a shell of their former selves, though they are rebuilding.

It’s simply weight of numbers, young families have not been moving into these areas for a long time due to housing prices and it’s taken its toll. There’s a lot of people of non-European background who, for whatever reason, Australian Football has not really connected with. A stack more Lin Jongs would be very welcome!

Bit of a throwaway line there adhoc. Not here to argue but 2 or 3 struggling clubs merging can also create 1 struggling club. Having been through merger in another sport it is a fair bit to go through. What ground/name/song, club structure, club policies etc isn't something that comes up in 1 night
Clubs that are fighting for survival need guidence and help from the league itself, I am not talking about a handout but it should be more than what they are doing at present.

If the individual clubs with their history, past and current members, sponsors and supporters are unable to keep a club going, then how the heck does the league keep them going? If clubs unable to stand on its own two feet because its people have deserted it, then time to close the doors unfortunately. Just like country pubs, no use keeping the doors open if the punters are drinking at another pub.

A good point.

I don’t think people are asking the league to keep clubs afloat. Decisions made by the league and AFL south east in surrounding suburbs need to give consideration to the effect they have on existing clubs though.
