Saints in trouble again!

That ACA story was comically bad even by their trashy standards, it was like a Frontline parody.

They tried to make it sound as bad and sinister as possible and then threw in all the usual Duthie, Milne stuff to try to flesh it out. Montagna's email actually made the dwarf look worse than Montagna for sitting on his arse and doing nothing entertaining at the event, then deciding after the event to try to milk the fire incident for more publicity/money. The ACA reporter ignored all that and then questioned whether that evil bastard Montagna apologised, which he actually did for the clothing damage.

It just showed the whole incident up for the joke it is.

Maybe the club should bring in their legal team. Get a bit of money from Ch 9 as well.
You can bet that Collingwood would do that. Our club doesn't say shit though. We just sit there and take all this bs.

Don't worry, if we can keep our heads low it will be someone else next week.

You're right in that there will be soon another scandal to displace this one. The worry is that it will be us once again.

The fairly desperate attempts to pad the story just show there is no way in the world he was paid much for his story. I would highlight that the over-the-top faked reactions is standard fare from what I have seen from this fairly poor excuse of a reporter. "A priest ... at St Kilda??? (shock horror face)"

I'm seeing a "defence" of what do you expect from a dwarf from this organisation? Great. The players have hired a guy (thereby linking his sorry arse with the club) evidently with little integrity and work ethic. But someone who will run to the media (remembering his little mate is well known having buddied up with that last bastion of good taste in Sam Newman) as fast as his legs will carry him.

Oh, well played Saints. 2014 motto already sorted "Lighting it Up". Or can we use the old one "Believe or Burn"? We've already got the name of our player Q&A videos right "Saints HotSeat".

A very minor story padded out with predictable faux outage from the gutter jurnos at A Current Unfair. Once again, I say this story only has legs because of the media perception of the Saints. It would have been "oh, boys will be boys, players having fun, blowing off steam, etc etc" at any other club. Not that we should put ourselves in this position, but honestly, it seems every time a Saints player sneezes he is introducing a deadly new strain of the plague into the air!

It really is a wonder that the poor bloke, who was, according to his mates, traumatized, humiliated and so offended by this incident he couldn't even see a doctor about it found the courage to appear on TV and rehash the whole thing in front of the world. What a brave soul!:rolleyes:

I guess this Lannister didnt pay his debts

I cannot believe this didn't get many likes. Absolute gold.

By the time I've read a thread this size these days the issue has been forgotten - therefore my posts are rare these days.

The ACA story was such gutter trash. Unbelievable they get away with this defamation night after night.

In relation to the actual event of someone getting set on fire... It was mad Monday. Harden the **** up even if you are a dwarf! Don't be there otherwise. If a bit of clothes singeing is the worst thing that happens it was a tame event. The club has gone over and above for mine. I would suggest apologising and buying new clothes is doing enough.

On the other hand, it doesn't change the basic fact. Clint Jones lit fire to a human being.

Just on this; have we confirmed that the dwarf did not in fact bring this lighter to the event?

I admit to not paying much attention to this, I have been on and heard tales of the local clubs mad Mondays and end of season trips and it pisses on most things the AFL boys get up to, but I see the supposed "you did shit job at fake security entertainment" quip and think "well, BBQ lighters for all intents and purposes would make security have some capacity for a deterrent...". I'm just trying to piece how it got there in the first place to even start with what then happened.

Using fire is part of his act. This probably prompted Jones to think, most likely in a drunken state of idiocy, that a dumb prank that he was pulling on friends was acceptable to someone he didn't know.

Jones is a massive dumbass for this but what shits me the most is people attributing it to "culture" as if a football club in any way shape or form could actually influence such a thing.

Nettlefold :

Our footy club is pretty sad at the moment (and there have been) frank discussions.

There is a compound (effect - of having another incident after others).

Members who put their money in deserve better.

The club needs need to be a lot more aware of issues that may have adverse affect on the club and its standing.

There obviously has been negative feedback from sponsors on the incident. It has detracted from the farewell for three champions.

Hopefully this will appease all the supporters having a dig at the club. They are on to it. They cannot stand watch over every player 24/7. It's now on the players and if they muck up, the club should punish them.

Let's move on.

I admit I shot off an email early in the week and vented my frustration at another off field issue. I didn't expect a response...

I must say, the club responded via email and advised that all complaints have been presented to footy department and all players have read all emails regarding this issue.
I then received a phone call this morning from a player apologising and acknowledging its not good enough.

Wow they are in some almighty trouble.

Fair enough too.

Joey blown any leadership aspirations do we think?

Cause you kind of hope that it was a young guy making an error of judgment and someone like Joey is the guy at the door when the entertainment arrives thinking "this so won't end well"

First time I have ever written to the club was over this and expressing my disappointment that once again players poor choices and lack of responsibility, had reflected badly on the club, sponsors, members and supporters.

The club emailed me yesterday thanking me for the email and that the most appropriate person would reply to me as soon as possible. This morning I received an email from the club with an apology and advice that they will be releasing within the next fortnight a long term strategic document on how they want the club to be. All very encouraging.

A few minutes after the email one of the Saints senior players phoned me to personally apologise on behalf of the players for the stupid Mad Monday incident. He said they realise, that not only can they, not do the wrong thing, but they can't put themselves in situations, where it could be seen that they are doing the wrong thing even when they are not. The 150 emails from members, the media and online reaction, plus other concerns have had a huge impact at the club.

He said that the club has taken this very very seriously and had a number of meetings on this already. There are already big changes being made and will have more made over the coming months.

The player said he was personally embarrassed by it and was still being asked about it, as he went about his day to day life, ie yesterday in a cafe. He said that it was a real pity, as the last round was such a high, with it being the best match he had ever been involved in (fair call after grand finals) and this disappeared so quickly with the Mad Monday incident. He was happy to chat and was in no rush, spending 12 minutes chatting on the incident, the club, his happiness with the year and the enthusiasm and positive benefits of the youth etc.

A very pro-active thing by the club and the players to take the time to do this. Looking back this may be the incident that sets institutional change at St Kilda and a very positive time ahead.

It's absolutely fantastic that the club has acknowledged those that took the time to write to them to apologize, not only in writing, but to have the actual players themselves contact supporters to personally express regret and distress is a wonderful step.

As St Kilda supporters, we are often ourselves made the target of opposition supporters for the actions, perceived or otherwise, of the club we barrack for. I actually had to leave one game early in disgust as myself and the people I was with were being called a "rapist" and a "pedophile" by a group of *unnamed opposition club*s supporters, so it is heartening that our club now realizes the damage their actions have on us.

Hopefully we have turned the corner.

Interesting. I will have to check this out.

As a supporter I expect players to stuff up because they are young bucks who live in a bubble and consequently stuff will happen.

What I don't expect is our club to not handle these affairs well. What I want to see is a better system in place from the club around how they deal with disasters. I know of professionals who offered to assist the club for free to educate players and the club about how to deal with these types of issues and they got no response. We are not alone however as the same free advice was offered to other clubs who also didn't take up the offer. Time for the club to get professional with these basic building blocks. If we don't have a president with a media presence like Eddie everywhere or Brayshaw who can disseminate the message - then we need a slick PR machine in the background. This is basic stuff in the corporate world and doesn't cost the earth if systems are put in place at the beginning.

I still cast my mind back to the press conference that Rooey called to vent his anger about the nude photographs. The club allowed him to stand up there and hammer Gilbert. Not to say that Gilbert didn't deserve a whack - but a slick club would have sat the 2 down and sorted the whole thing and then had a presser in which Rooey and Gilbert sat side by side - brothers in arms - to explain that they had resolved the issue and it was over. Instead - Rooey said that he hadn't spoken to Gilbert but would give him an earful when he did .. I was left with the impression that the club was imploding and the players hated each other. I find out about 2 months later that they kissed and made up and were back rooming with each other on interstate trips :rolleyes:. Again - basic stuff!!!

Prevention is better than cure. We all know that. It seems the club hasn't worked that out. I hope they do - for the sake of our club.

you shouldve reported them to security for unsociable behaviour and they wouldve been removed from the venue
