Young midfielders Ryan Byrnes and Jack Bytel have put their hands up for senior selection after both were shining lights in the Saints’ practice match at Punt Rd.

Byrnes bagged two impressive majors to go along with a mature display in the middle, while Bytel found plenty of footy in the loss.

There’s one in every draft class, and Ryan Byrnes might just be the bolter who catches everyone by surprise.

Snapped up by the Saints with pick No. 52 in the 2019 National Draft, the 19-year-old is a ready-made footballer, boasting a 180cm and 80kg frame.

The former Sandringham Dragons captain averaged 25 disposals per game in his draft year, and has carried that form directly into his practice outings for the red, white and black.

Byrnes starred in St Kilda’s two scratch matches alongside Bytel, booting two goals to complement his impressive numbers against the Tigers.

With serious breakaway speed and plaudits from his teammates, Byrnes could slot right into the senior line-up for Thursday evening’s marquee match.

There may not have been a scratch match for Ryan Byrnes to stake his claim this weekend, but the untried Saint remains a frontrunner to come into the side for Round 7.

The 19-year-old has been selected as an emergency for the past two weeks off the back of best-on-ground performances against Richmond and Carlton.

Now, Adelaide Oval could become the young Saint’s first hunting ground as he looks to make his mark in the red, white and black.

Ryan Byrnes will make his senior debut on Monday night against the Crows after a string of eye-catching displays at reserves level.

The 19-year-old was given the news this morning by Brett Ratten to the socially-distant rapture of his teammates in the club’s Noosa hub.

Byrnes becomes the second Saint to play his first senior game in 2020, following Max King in making his mark in the red, white and black.

A strong inside midfielder with great breakaway speed and a knack for racking up possessions, Byrnes was selected with pick No. 52 in last year’s draft.

The Sandringham Dragons skipper and reigning best-and-fairest was drafted as a ready-made footballer, but amid the Saints’ throng of experienced off-field acquisitions, his chances of squeezing into the senior line-up in his draft year appeared slim.

A pair of standout performances in the club’s most recent scratch matches quickly changed that, however, resulting in Byrnes’ selection as an emergency for Rounds 5 and 6.

Now, the young Saint’s sudden rise up the ranks and exceptional form have been rewarded with a well-deserved senior berth.

Byrnes becomes the 1616th player to represent St Kilda at the highest level of the men’s competition.

Ryan Byrnes has made a successful return to competitive football as Sandringham kickstarted its 2021 VFL Season against Richmond on Friday afternoon.

Hamstring surgery in February put Byrnes on ice for close to two months, but the young Saint didn’t look out of place at the Swinburne Centre with 21 disposals, eight marks and a classy goal from long-range.

It has been a solid start to the season for Ryan Byrnes, who continued his run of good form on Saturday, racking up 25 touches against Port Melbourne.

It comes off the back of a 21-disposal, eight-mark game from the young speedster last weekend against Richmond, where he made his return after a hamstring injury sidelined him in February.

If he were to break back into the senior side, it would be the 19-year-old’s first game since his debut last season against the Crows at Adelaide Oval.

Ryan played well against The Hawks with 18 disposals including 9 marks . After this performance I imagine he will play a lot more games in the seniors this season . Seems to have the ability to find space and his disposals are very good .

Ryan is looking every bit a senior player already . He only had 16 disposals but at 93% DE is a great effort. He seems to be getting more at home with each game . Look like a player who will end up playing a lot of games for the Saints .
