At the Australian championships in April in Sydney which acted as an Olympics trial the winner of the women's 100m was Melissa Green who is the national record holder with an 11.11 sec. The top 3 placegetters were

T12 runner from Cuba Omara Durand ran 11.40 to win and set a new world record for her class. As you can see from my cut and paste she missed running an Olympic Qualifying time by 0.08 sec. Her vision impairment of T12 is classified as

Athletes who have limited vision in both eyes either in
• How far they can see (visual acuity). Athletes can see objects 2 meters away, what a person with normal vision can see at 60 metres away; or
• How wide they can see (visual field). Athletes have tunnel vision less than 10 degrees wide.

Love watching the Paralympics - some of these athletes are truly inspirational.

Haven't caught any of the rugby yet (does anyone know when it's on?) but am enjoying the swimming & athletics in particular.
It hasn't started yet. Starts Wednesday morning Rio time. Add 13 hours to the schedule below for AEST. Oz v GBR is the first game starting 11.30pm AEST. Will be interesting to see how much 7 show live as its all live on their app.

The Paralympics seems to be a more inclusive event than the Olympics despite thinking that in the developing countries there wouldn't be much of a chance for disabled people to get a crack at Para sports.

At the Olympics
* 206 Nations and territories that had a National Olympic Committees sent 1 athlete or more
* 306 events and 307 golds with dead heat in women's 100m
* 28 sports across 41 disciplines
* 59 nations won at least 1 gold medal
* 87 nations won at least 1 medal

At the Paralympics
* 159 Nations and territories attending
* 238 of the 528 events completed as at Monday night Rio time Tuesday morning Oz
* 22 sports across 24 disciplines
* Only 12 of those 22 sport/24 disciplines have awarded medals so far
* 2 sports have dominated Athletics 79 golds, 77 Swimming + Cycling Track 17, Judo 13, Powerlifting 14, Table Tennis 13, Shooting 8, Paratriathlon 6, Archery 2, Boccia 3, Rowing 4, Wheelchair fencing 2. There must have been a dead heat in swimming as the total golds is 239 at the moment.
* 53 nations have won gold
* 76 nations have won medals

Most outstanding has been the Ukraine. Ok the last 3 Paras, after finishing way down the list in 2000, on the gold/total medal table they have finished 6th/9th, 4th/5th, 4th/5th with the last 2 being a battle with Oz for 4th and 5th and 24 v 23 golds in 2008 and both got 32 golds in 2012 and it was 32-24-28=84 vs 32-23-30=85, but to think with a civil war tearing their country apart they are a clear 3rd with a nice gap to USA in both gold and total medals and whilt 6 behind in gold only 2 in total behind Great Britain is a brilliant effort. It shows an outstanding commitment to their Para sports programs.

Riley Batt for 2016 Australian Sports Star of the year across all sports. He's 22, been to 3 Paralympics and has 2 golds and is the best wheelchair rugby player in the world. I got up and watched the final. He was brilliant. Had good help from his team mates in particular fellow 3.5er Chris Bond, but without Batt, Oz would have struggled to make it to the semis, let alone win gold.

Oz on the track won the 5th most medal but were 13th by the gold measure.

Got more medals than the 2012 and 2016 regular Olympic games teams, that's fantastic for our Paralympians!
yes but it helps that there are over 200 more events than the Olympics eg at the Olympics you have 1 x 100m for men and 1 for women. at the paras you have 3 for the visually impaired for both men and women, 6 for men and 4 for women with cerebral palsy categories, 3 each for amputees, and 4 for men and 3 for women wheelchair athletes.

Great effort but its really hard to compare the 2 groups of athletes given the number of sports, the number of events and double up of events etc between the 2 Games'.
