Not too sure there's a lot of support for footy in Noosa, Wollongong, Townsville or Newcastle.

I'll substitute in Mount Gambier, Warrnambool, Horsham and Echuca-Moama!
Theres about 20 times the population in those cities v the towns you mentioned. Are they 20 times more likely to support football in those towns, I say no.

edit* lets even take the smallest Wollongong (292k) v the largest Warrnambool (34k). Is Warrnambool more than 8.5 times more receptive to footy. I think not, though there's certainly an argument there.

I guess I look at things like:

Player production
Quality of local competition
Football infrastructure

In making those suggestions.

There is no doubt the Hampden league, the Western Border league, the Wimmera league and the Central Murray league have strong facilities in each city. Echuca already hosts a number of Murray Bushrangers matches per season. Warrnambool's Reid Park is one of the best local grounds in country footy.

Size of population is only one factor.

Just to let you know how I came up with the list, I took the populations of all cities mentioned here and multiplied it by a support number (which could be way off) of 0-10.
here's a fuller list

How did you work out your support number?

Name me the last draftee to come from Cairns or Townsville? I'm at a loss.

Also Hobart rated below Gold Coast is absolutely criminal.

Yeh, I'm not sure why Townsville would make the top 20 (why does it receive a multiplier of 3?)

And in all honesty, impossible to make a case that Canberra should be above Geelong.

And Sunshine Coast top 10? Seriously?

Even Wollongong at 11 is silly - all of these sorts of cities should be getting a multiplier of 1, at the very most.

your support number would translate better as 95% rather than by multiplying 9.5.

ie 4,529,496 *95% = 4,303,021

No Qld or NSW city or town should be on this list, maybe outside a couple of those western NSW country towns near the Vic border. You have to do this as a ratio between Australian footy interest v other interests, and in these two states rugby league is a clear winner everywhere. Townsville has no interest, Cairns severely overrated up here in FNQ - believe me guys, Mars has a quicker footy pulse than this place and I feel like a lone pariah. Hobart and Launceston are being ripped off here...as per f###ing usual...

I'd even challenge the ranking of the top three. Melbourne's sheer size means it can accomodate other interests to levels that make almost anything nationally viable, as does Sydney, and they pride themselves on being the sporting capital of this and every other parallel universe. Sure, they might be the hub of the AFL, footy's Amazon Forest, but they are also the hub of a lot of other things too, with a rapidly expanding population that isn't rooted in footy traditions. One of the stated reasons for the end of origin footy was the relative lack of interest in WA home crowds...while Adelaide fans always showed up baying for blood, WA fans started to decline, and Victorians were always ambivalent anyway...

I'd put Adelaide on top of this list, if I wasn't going to do an in depth analysis of all of these country towns and work out their relative contributions, pitfalls and interest in Australian footy...which I won't...!
