Richmond FC
Photos are great, but video is better. Watch the best bits of this morning's training session including a grueling running session that Brandon Ellis won.

Ellis will by #2 behind Cotchin by the end of 2014. To all the naysayers - Bookmark it, write it down, save this post. Do whatever you gotta do but it's happening.

Give it 2 years

Looks like a young Newy!

With a year of knowledge and baseline info the fitness staff know how far to push the guys this year, which definitely helps. Peter Burge explained that in one of the videos.

They were doing a shuttle run type test, not a beep test but a run 60m apart where 1 level equals up and back where the levels don't change. Brandon did that about 20 times and was absolutely spent, where you see him falling over afterwards.

What time trial was that?
The answer lies here

I think Mcantosh could be a round 1 bolter this year.
He reminds me of Burchall

I agree with this.

I'm no brilliant footy training judge, and I've seen Tambling look like a Brownlow medallist at Punt Rd before, but my impressions from a stint looking through the fence for a while follow.

Few lap runners (Jack, McBean - man, eat up - Jackson, Grimes, Ivan) but not exclusively and far from trotting. Ball work was mainly in close/ releasing handballs and then kick to a forward etc.
Didn;t see Conca out there, but no other notable absentees.
I love how Cotch was in the fast guy group for sprints (Lids, Ellis), would tail off but push right through.

Draftees - Lennon looked ok, but I doubt he's R1. Gordon is a fit runner, clearly and regularly won his group, and they were going really fast. Didn;t notice Lloyd but he may not have been in his right jumper.
Miles gets it but is no surgeon (no news there), the ranga Brisbane bloke (mental blank) is very swift but made a couple of errors with his hands (I remember now - Banfield) that were a little cringing as the chain broke down etc.
O'Hanlon looked terrific. I'm a big fan, but he's a very solid unit (189/90kg), marks at the ball's highest point, really plucks it and kicks I50 very well. Elton started from the goalsquare. He seems to hunch and possibly even too muscly. Maybe that's wrong, when compared to others, but he's a bustling type without obviously excellent athleticism.
Astbury is trimmer above the waist than before. Couldn;t really get a read on position he was playing.

I'm not building Ellis up stupidly, but his workrate and the amount of times he had the ball, even after winning (not blitzing) the timed sprints, was wonderful to see. Between the arcs he is a boss. He spent a fair bit of time partnered with McDonough, who needs a haircut and still looks to have a bit of puppy fat, but does find and use it well.

Never really watched Orren before, but he was not disgraced in the runs with the big guys. Hampson was doing everything and has a big spring. He still looks like a giraffe with a cup of tea sometimes, but kick it high and it'd be impossible for him to be outmarked.

Cotch - never really seen him as a startlingly good trainer, and so it was again. He moves very well and hits targets nicely, but he was in second gear and Dusty owned him once by crowding the mark and one of Cotch's dinky kicks was smothered, forcing a turnover.

Dusty looked fine, not amazing, but fine. His balldrop looks so odd sometimes and I do wish he'd use his left more. How would I describe him. I'd say he looked more commanding. Not burning the track but just in control more so than before. Physical condition not a worry at all and like most of the mids he looked leaner if anything.

Lids has always been an electrifying trainer, and was so again. Him getting off the chain regularly is the single biggest thing that would improve our top 4 chances, IMO. Jet, that needs help, but also is in control of his own destiny.

Matt Thomas OK. Grunt and does what it says on the packet.

Griffiths. Started watching him and he looked like he was really trying with aggression. That's the key. He's such a talent, but I came away thinking he might not make the leap we all hope. Give him space and he's a very damaging player, but close him down and things can go wrong when he has the pill.

Foley. One of the big highlights, for mine. Moving well, did everything, including those annoying stab passes that york the target, but his run and carry was excellent. Big year for him, and he's well set up.

Kamdyn McIntosh. Holy cow. I needed a record to ID him and eventually asked someone next to me. I can't say I watched him with the ball, but as a sheer physical specimen, and the last time I saw him up close would have been at Vic Park in 2012, he must have put on 8-10kg since then and looks taller. Can't wait to see him in NAB Cup.

Dea. Yeah, looks a million bucks physically, but just does his thing and didn't dazzle. Ditto Batch, who did kickouts. Newman lively, and I saw him forward at one point.

Grigg. Keeps running and often in a chain of passes, but loopy kicks and handballs remain.

Houli ran laps. Massive beard and if anything a wee bit paunchy. Not that I can talk.

Chaplin was OK, just doing what he does.

A Edwards OK, but I suspect (and probably hope) he doesn't play much this year.

Vickery is fast. Like, really fast. Buried Elton and someone else I forget when he was the chaser. Not sure how this is best used, and he can look goofy still, but man is he quick.

Vlastuin was Vlastuin. Mark well, win the ball well, kick to where it should go, run ahead and get it again. Yawn.

Morris was keping up well in the fast running group.

Arnot did laps.

Tactics? Didn't go with a notepad or anything, but keeping possession again the focus, with overlap handballing (which requires overlap running) noticeable. I didn't sense they were doing anything revolutionary.

Think that's it. Good to see, but not a surgically precise session. Most seemed rooted at various stages, which I guess was the idea.
