I got there just as the players were working off the stage as I had to tie up a few loose ends in the rooms.

Smashed down 3 hot dogs, 3 pies and half a dozen scones in 5 minutes.
And then washed it all down with a gallon of beer.

Although one elderly lady double-dipped her scone into the jam! I walked over to her, taped her on the shoulder and blinked feverishly at her. She soon got it.

Other than that, great night. The acoustic duo weren't bad although they refused to play Kung-Fu Fighting. I really hate that - bands playing songs under false pretences.

Great to catch up with Uncle Leo and see see. That story about the dwarf in the veggie garden and a Hungarian Salami is something I'll never forget. You'll have to tell me it again at next years function. I wish I'd been there to see it. Maybe next time hey?

One of the best nights of my life in retrospect. Didn't get home til 1am!!!!

Mr R, the problem is that we had to pay for the beer and wine.

Yes, they were charging guests $100 to have their fill of pies, hot dogs and scones, but you had to buy drinks at the bar. At Etihad prices. Truly.

You wouldn't have believed it possible. Who the **** thought this was appropriate?

Sorry, what the ****?

Paying for drinks at this function? WHAT THE ****?

Yes, LtK. I knew that you had to pay extra from the earlier posts. I was "just saying" that people are happy to pay a fair price for "free" grog (of relatively ordinary quality but copious quantity) and party pies - especially when it's supporting the club - but they're not happy to pay a reasonably steep entry fee, plus grog at Etihad-style bar prices, for free party pies, scones and jam and the sight of Stevo disappearing out the door. There may have been some other "celebs" there but you might not have recognised them.;) Maybe Liam Anthony was there or Gavin Urquhart, or Jason Daniltchenko?

Like some of the celebs on the TV shows these days.

It says that on the invite, surely you read the invite before you paid the money.

The hots dogs were quite good and they tomato sauce for the hot dogs and pies was free so you can't really complain

They should have served up some free lemons. Sucking them wouldn't have been as bitter as watching the match.

After reading all of the posts in this thread I ask myself. What is happening at this club. It really upsets me to read how this club is going at the moment

I had a response directly and fairly ubruptly to my face from a representative of the club at an AGM about 15 years ago.

I as a shareholder had the audacity to suggest the best way to get a new building for the club was to go down the path of it being a community centre with a gymnasium attached. The official looked me up and down and asked me WTF would i know about managing a business (i own several) let alone a football club. He pointed out from the derelict Kanga Kasino to the old stand and told me nobody would ever invest any money into a community centre at Arden st. After which he pushed past me and left the AGM.

Does that official still work at the club? Is he in the football department now?

Funnily enough, if you tell people you're having a pie night and you put on some free beer and house wine people actually enjoy it. Advertise a "fancy do" and people don't expect party pies.

100%. I remember a few years back there was a pie night, may have even been in the old facilities. All the players were there and mingling. It was a terrific night.

Thanks for the shout out Arthur. The dwarf and Debrecener story never fails to get a few laughs.

It was great to catch up with you and some of your 83 mates. That Onip's a really nice guy, although a bit quiet. You should get him to post on BigFooty as I'm sure he'd be a great contributor to this forum.

As you know, I declined your offer to kick on to Bobby McGees with you and 26 of your mates because the acoustic duo promised to play my request of Disco Duck before the end of the night. They failed to do so and I'm still privately seething.

Something like that would 100% be a better event to reward "premium" members.

I couldn't go Saturday but would probably not have bothered even if I could. The event is tired and dull. If anyone actually paid $100 to bring a "guest" along they would quite rightly feel absolutely ripped off. People pay that per head at Weddings at some very nice places - food drinks and a decent night all included.

If anyone's interested, the club would like comments about the event in writing. The email address l've been given is: membership@nmfc.com.au Let's let them know.

Thanks, I can send them an email saying that the hotdogs were good and the free suace was good. But in the future I think they should have more condiments like some sweet chilli sauce, I know it's unusual but I enjoy it on hot dogs. Maybe some cheese and possibly some grilled onion to top it off

That was exactly the function I was thinking of, LT. I just couldn't remember the year. It was a ripper and it was free pies and sauce and free cask wine and beer and nobody was complaining.

Was a belter of a night, because it was exactly as advertised and not pretentious at all. Help yourself to pies straight out of the pie warmer in the change rooms. Bring that shit on.

Times have changed.
