With the additions of Clark & Dow after injury & Garcia, Jones & Stocker providing depth in there & with Phillipou having his breakout & Henry providing a spark.
Our midfield definately improved & seemed decent enough.
Unfortunately we lose Dow & Pou, but gain Macrae & a 2nd year more wing Wilson.

Improved? Sure... but decent enough?

I disagree.

Our midfield is coming from being "totally putrid" to "slightly less putrid"...
Best case- reaching the dizzying heights of "mediocre".

Clearances of course aren't the be all and end all- but they can't be discounted entirely as at very least a bit of an indicator of midfield quality.

We on average get at least a handful less clearances per game than many of the top teams.
And on top of that- many of the few clearances that we do get- are roma grabs out of the ruck and a blind hack off his boot.

Macrae helps- but we are coming from a LONG way back and still miles off the pace of proper top 6-8 teams

"At Stockers age" , Steele had just come off a shortened season with 417 disposals, half of them contested possessions, and he was named Co-captain for the following season.
When you say he "looks as capable" are you saying he looks like he should be physically capable?
Because no way he gets the ball like 24 year old Jack Steele.

Stocker does not win contested ball.
Stocker does not win clearances.
That's why he's playing in the backline.

Max Hall wasn't in the Queue at Hawthorn, he was a member of their VFL team, they had no more dibs on him than any other team.
The general underrating of Steele with St Kilda supporters is incredible.

Bizarre is a word that comes to mind Saints43.

Fortunately I rarely come across people who don't rate Steely.

Just very quietly.......he looked in ripping nic this morning.......running .....kicking etc was absolutely on point.

His huge weight loss at the start of 2023 was a massive mistake, which no one at the time would admit to.

.Thankfully he,s now "back in town"

in my experience watching this rebuild which started all the way back in 2012.... its never that easy. the steele one is a great example of that.
Yep it’s been a very long slog - and in true saints fan fashion I’m willing to wait a bit longer
Would not throw the kitchen sink at TDk but would try for someone else this year and wait another year and get Ben king

Caveat on that is if the kings both have dire years and TDK wins the Brownlow and wants to come

You are talking about an average shortfall of 9 per game.

Just having Macrae will be good for 4.
Phillipou averaged more than 4 when he moved to the midfield.
Windhager, Clark and Dow all had interrupted seasons and can do better.

Highest clearance game was R19 with 46. Clark had 8. Sinclair 6, Marshall 5, Phillipou 5, Steele 4, Jones 3 , Nas 3, Bonner 3.

Lowest was R22 with 28.
Phillipou had 5, Marshall 4 no-one else with more than 2.
Crouch , Windhager and Clark not playing ( 2nd , 4th and 6th on your list ).
A bit of attention to Steele and Sinclair probably put paid to us.

It's only a matter of time before Clark gets injured again. We have to move past him if we are ever going to improve. I know it's harsh but it's true IMHO...
Bit of an exaggeration?
If he's fit and he's playing better than the other mids, he plays.
Other mids have to lift their game to get in the team ahead of him.
That's good for improvement.

He might be one more big injury away from an early career finish, but hardly stopping us from improving imo.
If Pou/Windy/Garcia/Nas/Trav/Carroll/Said/Boxhall etc force someone of his quality into the 2s, it probably means we're coming along well.

If you made the comment about a 29yo Jones, I could understand it a bit more...but even then, when fit he makes the kids have to lift their game to play. Which is what you want, I reckon.

We've got a lot of young players on the list now, we can carry a couple of senior mids who are pretty good but injured a fair bit.

I'm playing Barrat if he's fit given our situation. I'm sick of seeing our draftee tall defensive players playing at Sandy getting injured and not actually developing. Put him in and give our senior assistant coach and senior head coach the opportunity to mold him from day 1.

Oh you can't do that he'll get slaughtered people will say. Maybe. Maybe not.

We debuted a kid in 97 in round 1. His first 6 games he had these on the paddock when he jogged down to the backline. Max ended up ok 😉 I'd rather see how Barrat goes than watching those not capable of pushing us up to the top 4 over the next 2 to 3 years.

Hawthorn: Nick Holland, Jason Dunstall

Brisbane Lions: Alastair Lynch, Daniel Bradshaw

Collingwood: Saverio Rocca, Gavin Brown

Sydney Swans: Tony Lockett, Michael O'Loughlin

Fremantle: Tony Modra, Clive Waterhouse

Melbourne: David Schwarz, David Neitz

Jack Higgins rated Hunter Clark as best-on in match sim today…
Hunter Clark has the best highlights of all the current mids at St Kilda. Period.

His issue has been endurance and injuries. Besides endurance, he just has to protect his head more. Just because of his body structure and posture, his head juts out and usually ends up being a contact point.

Max was over 2 years older than Barrat would be.

But I would like to see these guys given a chance.

Hard to know obviously but if Hammer is good to play Round One I reckon they'll go with him and the Cord to replace Battle and Howard.
That's the lineup I'd go with.

Adelaide with Walker, Thithorpe and Fogarty will be a handful. I think that lineup will cover it.

Hammer needs some time training with the back 6 and be a core part of their structures. Needs to be a focus at training and in the preseason matches.
