Player older than their coach?

I posed this question in the Dustin Fletcher thread... but, what is the most recent case of a player being older than their coach? I know that it was probably fairly common in the days of playing-coach, but are their any recent cases of this? Just curious.

Without much research I've come up with Darren Milburn being less than 12mths younger than Chris Scott... but I can't find a case of the player being older.



In today's age with younger and younger coaches, it could become a common occurrence in the near future.

Well if you count Jade Rawlings who was caretaker coach of Richmond when Terry Walace was sacked, Matthew Richardson was older than Jade Rawlings.

Conversely though, players are tending to retire earlier and earlier.

Good get, forgot about him... what about full-time coach though, not a care-taker. I'm seriously stumped, can't think of any.

Yeah i knew it was a richmond player though, just got Ben Cousins confused with Matthew Richardson for some reason.

Yes they are, another interesting piece of trivia. Must have been interesting when they were together at Richmond in 2009.

Yeah, pretty sure Jade is married to Richo's sister from memory... BUT, apparently these two were never player/coach in the same game. Richo was injured in Round 6, 2009 and didn't play again... Jade didn't become caretaker until Round 11, 2009.

30 years old, players older than him included Peter Russo and Jimmy Krakouer.

Aside from the playing captain-coaches, Alan Jeans was only 27 when he retired as a player and appointed coach of St Kilda. He surely coached some older players in his first few years.

Can't yet think of any recent examples though apart from Sheldon already mentioned.

My database. Should mention that I'm missing DOB's (and therefore ages) for 5 coaches and 206 players, all pre-1940. The AFL now has almost all of these but the lazy buggers haven't updated their stats site yet.

Not at senior level, but Tadhg Kennelly played one or two games under Swans reserves coach Henry Playfair earlier this year.
