Pick 66 for Young and nothing for Murphy. The AFL's latest "balancing" act by the AFL Arse Clowns

Why was the compo pick tied to ladder position?

Surely the 'fairest' way to do it would be to slot these compo picks in between rounds of the draft, and THEN by ladder position?

i.e. if there are 21 picks in the first round, and Lynch, Molony and Young are all considered equal weighting as start of second round, then it should be Melbourne (pick 22), West Coast (pick 23) and Hawthorn (pick 24). If you're using the objective measures of salary and age to weight these compos, then players of equal weight should yield equally weighted compo picks.

I mean, the counter argument is that the stronger clubs can cover a free agent loss better - but you overcome this as I showed above, with the lower ranked team getting the best compo within that group of compo picks, not chucking them at opposite ends of round 2 or 3.

Well, I'll be......

I haven't posted on BF for a while, however do read the posts regularly. I bit my tongue as the AFL right royally screwed us with the Saturday night preliminary final debacle, and didn't bother posting at all throughout the whole 2012 GF disappointment, however:

Clinton Young - 26yo, 116 games, premiership player, best 22 player in 2012 GF side, 20 games in 2012, top 6 for kicks at Hawks this year = compo pick 66
Tom Murphy - 26yo, 95 games, not quite a premiership player, best 25 player in 2012 team, 6 games in 2012, in leadership group = no compensation

I understand that the "compensation" picks are not intended to equal fair market value and, as others have pointed out, there is a reasonable argument to support the view that no compensation should be given at all. However the lack of transparency and accountability with the AFL really irritates me.

1. Vlad subsequently admitted that the AFL "got it wrong" with the preliminary final stuff-up, but so what? Does the HFC receive any form of compensation? No.
2. Vlad admits that the salary cap "cost of living allowance" for the Sydney teams should probably be reviewed as "it hasn't been looked at for 5 years". He suggests that they should "probably go and get some cost of living data or something"..... really? Wouldn't you get this info first before you talked to the media? It's not that hard to obtain!
3. Free agency "compensation" picks = see above. Lose 2 x 26yo 100 game (approx) players from a GF team, and get next to stuff all of nothing as compensation.
4. Wait until the 2013 draw comes out....... <watch this space>

Oh well, not much we can do about it all of course. Fortunately we all love the game and love our Hawks and that's why we continue following....despite the AFL, not because of it!

I just wish that Vlad didn't run the organisation like it was a small tin-pot company with absolutely no stakeholders whatsoever and next to no transparency. At what stage does "equalisation" go far enough? Why be successful?

All the best to Clinton & Tom in any case. I certainly don't begrudge Tom the move to GC and hope that he gets some more game time up there.

I hope that we pull off some trades next week, otherwise this whole month feels like an epic fail for us. Agree that Geelong & Collingwood appear to be the winners at this stage of proceedings.

You guys got majorly screwed with this compensation. Out of interest, if you had have received a second round pick for Young (which would have been a reasonable outcome I'd say), what pick would it have been?

And why no compensation at all for Murphy?

Pick 30-35 for Young and 60-65 for Murphy would have been a reasonable outcome for the Hawks.
It's a funny system isn't it? The AFL were pretty quiet about how it would be assessed and compensation awarded so I suspect they hope to favour clubs that are currently in the ditch and not reward clubs who are currently strong and competitive.

For Young I'd have been happy with a pick between 35-40, something where we can actually have a chance of landing a recognised talent and not basically taking a punt on a late pick which have proven to be very tough to be successful with. The AFL would have been better to have just combined Young and Murphy into one compensation pick in the mid to late 20s. As others have said, the compensation is just ridiculous when you compare it to what port have gotten.

I think it would of been 44 for young not sure on that, 1 pick inside the first 60 and I believe we have to draft at least 3-4 that or rookie upgrade someone.

It's pretty bad. But what's done is done. No point bitching and moaning about. It's not going to change.

rollling over and accepting garbage is unacceptable....this competition is becoming a joke....60,000 paying members need to demand the club acts...u can't have chaplin moloney and pearce getting the picks they have and young getting pick 66...the hawthorn board are answerable to its members...we will not accept this, take action on principle..off to the supreme court, let's see how that goes down for the health of the competition and lets see the afl try and f**k with us again. The real issue however, is that these clubs board members are also puppets of a farcical system

AFL pretty much lacks the creativity and leadership to design and implement a program so what they have done is to go overseas (NFL) and tried to adopt what they are doing over there. Unfortunately, it is a very different business, competition, history, culture, geography etc etc and the bits and pieces that don't fit here they just put a caveat on and leave it to some sort of convoluted subjective decision making based on God knows what logic. Just another loophole in a competition that has more holes than Swiss cheese.

Either the Pies offer wasn't that great and ours was really low or the Pies have some Judd like element in the deal which doesn't count in the contract offer used for compensation.

As for Chaplin and Pierce they must be getting massively overpaid.

Interesting tweets from Mark Stevens. Says Hawks are exploring their options. Quote from Mark Evans:"It is like we've been pick-pocketed and somebody has put an old $2 scratchy ticket back in our pocket."

I think best we can hope for is some tranparency. Not sure if it will help though, knowing exactly how the AFL went about violating Hawthorn

why do you take this defeatist loser attitude...how about hawthorn football club stand up and take serious action on principle...i don't waste my time and money for this garbage...as I'm sure many others don't also

Evans and the board can talk all the shit they like but they will be judged by the actions..no-one supports the afl, 60,000 people pay there $ to be hawthorn members

This may be the thing that stops me going to AFL all together
I'll always be a hawk member, however, the constant bs from admin has reduced me from 12+ per season to a mere 4 this year

At least despite the NRL crap during the cap scandal, they remain reasonably fair to all teams

Yes, a disturbing lack of transparency and system to awarding compensation picks. Why should the club's position on the ladder be considered in whatever esoteric system Vlad and his far-catcher, AA, have dreamed up over a boozy lunch? I mean, shouldn't players be assessed as players not in relation to the club they're leaving?
Just baffling that we get a pack of fish fingers and our arse treated like a fairground attraction while other clubs jettison garbage and recieve prime draft picks. Agree or disagree on compensation picks, there's no way some sort of quasi equilisation policy should be at play.

hit_pinata2.jpg

I'm hoping Vlad comes back in his next life as a pinata. Because his obsequious little yes-sir cartel wields its power with all the grace, wisdom and surety as an 8-year old on sugar high laying into a pinata. That's leadership for you. And I think, karmically, his soul's development would benefit from some pinata perspective. To balance things up, you know. Hahaha... I really just like the idea of him being laid into by a pack of kids.

Piss off.

Im in Scotland and posing on an internet forum hero. Im not saying what the club should do and would have no influence if I wanted to, Im just saying what I think the club can probably expect.

I look forward to reading the papers tomorrow, "A Daikos rallies together Hawthorn's online forum members and their collective words convince the usually obstinate Demetriou to backflip on Hawthorns compo picks."

Moloney, Lynch and Young all got ranked equally. The different picks for compensation reflect the fact that the compensation picks are tied to ladder position, so they were all deemed to be worth a third round pick for compensation but each team's third round pick is at a different position of the third round. It should not be tied to ladder position. That is the main problem.

Were was this explained that clubs get compensated not on on the quality of the FA players that are walking away from the clubs, but by AFL rules only, that compensation only applies according to were their teams, finish on the AFL leader?????

Now I'm convinced that the AFL commission is out of control and are just a greedy business institution, and they are just making things up as they please!!!!!

your a defeatist in that you advocate acceptance of an injustice as per your post i previously quoted....calling me a hero and telling me to piss off doesn't change this, nor does your thinly veiled sarcasm,... yes i do advocate a petition here be organised and sent to hawthorn football club board demanding action...i call on the administrators of this forum to organise and we the paying members sign....they are answerable to us, without us there is no club. I don't tolerate my club which is an Empire being f**ked on and doing nothing about it, and ill give you another tip, thousands of paying members would share in my sentiments.
