That's the first academy game I've watched this year, and I thought it was an impressive performance. But it was based on team cohesion and even contribution rather than standout performances by any individual.

I thought the team collectively showed a good understanding of space and angles, and they were always on the move to provide an overlap option to a team mate under pressure. The kicking was a mixed bag in the sense that many of the players weren't able to consistently manage the depth of their kicks, but they all looked like they had a fundamentally decent kicking action (not always true of past years' academy sides).

There was far more structure and purpose going forward that I've seen in previous teams. They weren't always able to execute but you could generally see what they were trying to achieve. A few goals were left on the table as a result of trying to be too unselfish, but better that than wasted chances through blazing away from unrealistic positions.

I was very impressed by the defensive unit, again as a team, rather than individuals. They closed down space, were disciplined in their spoiling and tackling, and were mostly able to exit their defensive fifty with style.

Although I didn't see last week's game, I know they were soundly thrashed by Brisbane, with one observer suggesting it looked as though they were playing up an age group. So I guess this performance needs to be tempered with a question mark over the quality of the opposition. But still, it was enjoyable to watch.

Having said it was a team effort, rather than one of individual performances, I did like the lively first half of the diminutive, helmeted Nandhal. He was a bit quieter in the second half, and he's probably too small to be draftable, but he has some moves.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Hawkins and he again did some good stuff today. I suspect he's a bit like Rider in that he has some tricks but doesn't have quite the production to be a genuine draft option, but whenever I've seen him he's produced a few wow moments.

I also like Andreacchio's game. I remember seeing him a bit last year and he looked undersized. But I think he's gained enough size now to hold his own, and he was a smooth mover coming out of defence.

Yeah, had a knee issue, according to the HS recap
Damn, that's bad timing. Have you been able to find a result for the AAU18 game vs Footscray? I'm coming up short atm. Seriously, how bloody hard is it to design a page with the correct links & updates AFL:mad:

Who is Nicholas Andreacchio? Never heard of him but those are some impressive numbers.

178cm small defender/mid, from the U18's group

Looks like they're playing him mainly off half back and through the midfield, now Lachlan Carmichael seems to be playing more in the mids, and Cabor has switched to the forwards so far this year.

Sounds like he is going to be a draft prospect going forward, though looks like we may have a midget midfield going forward with him and Gulden in the team :p

RMC scouting notes from the win against Eastern Ranges

#1 Nicholas Andreacchio
Small Defender | 178cm | 03/10/2006

Stats:
37 disposals, 10 marks, 5 rebound 50s

Andreacchio provided excellent distribution and execution with his kicking, especially in his delivery inside 50. He covered plenty of ground working up and back and weighted his kicking length perfectly. The speedy backman positioned well, took risks and backed himself. He always provided an option with his elite running patterns and showed great work rate, evasiveness, and composure.

#7 Lachlan Cabor
Small Forward | 178cm | 28/09/2005

Stats:
17 disposals, 5 inside 50s, 1 goal

Cabor showed excellent movement throughout the day, weighting his kicks perfectly. He was composed and evasive, backing himself to get out of trouble or through traffic before delivering the ball well by foot into his team’s attacking zone. His defensive pressure was solid, while he showed good one-on-one strength – especially against bigger opponents.

#10 Lachlan Carmichael
Defender | 183cm | 27/08/2007

Stats:
27 disposals, 8 marks, 2 tackles

Carmichael consistently distributed the ball well out of defence and also showed elite running patterns. He took risks with his long kicking and tended to make excellent decisions as they came off. The bottom-ager showed excellent movement and his high-end play reading ability, which allowed him to be first to the ball.

#12 Max Rider
Forward | 187cm | 28/08/2005

Stats:
14 disposals, 6 inside 50s, 1 goal

Playing as a high forward, Rider showed his excellent lead marking while also using his speed and strength to get away from his opponent and present at the kicker. He kicked a great long goal in the last quarter to kick off the term, and showed great vision to find a teammate unmarked right in front of goal late in the game, too. Has good football IQ and is very agile for his height.

#29 Ned Hawkins
Midfielder | 187cm | 09/07/2005

Stats:
36 disposals, 8 marks, 8 inside 50s

Hawkins provided excellent leadership throughout the game and was continually vocal out on the field in terms of direction, and reinforcing his teammates to stick to their game plan – even when the result was beyond doubt. He showed a great work ethic to constantly get involved and become prominent in all contests across the ground, contributing one-percenters to prevent certain goals. His ball delivery inside 50 was excellent and he did his best to bring others into the game, also displaying great strength to break tackles.

It really sounds like the Swans academy heavily emphasise kicking ability when the kids are younger. Every player mentioned there it mentioned what a good kicker they are.

Interesting - perhaps something Spike last year, and now Colin are really pushing with their coaching of the boys through the Academy boys now

It makes sense too as it is such a weapon having 5 or 6 really good kicks in your side. If you have really good kicks in the side it opens up options that a lot of teams can't do.

People talk about how tough the Hawthorn team was from 13 to 15 but one thing they had more than anything else was a lot of elite kickers.

Except that Heeney (when fit) is a superb kick. Blakey is a superb kick. Errol is a superb kick. Campbell has the basis of being a great kick once he learns how best to use it. Mills is an above average kick too.

So I doubt this is anything new in the academy programme.

I reckon every kid in the Academy as well as those that don’t make it are tutored in how to kick a footy as early as possible.
