i heard woopi were considering paying ryan woolley a few bob too return and be an assistant coach of woolgoolga?

Was only a trial though and KV apparently were not anywhere near full strength. No goal umpires according to their website either. Probably wouldn't place a lot of faith in the result.

The true comparison from the leagues will be shown June long weekend in the interleague rep fixture in Newcastle.

these are my predictions this year for the north coast afl
1st north coffs
2nd sawtell
3rd port macq
4th coffs swans

Good to see the results and ladders are now updated on Sportingpulse. I hope someone can now update the website as it was running well before Chris McKinley left. I'm assuming he updated the website. Coffs Swans must have dropped off a bit.

THE Settlers Inn Port Macquarie Magpies suffered a 22-point defeat at the hands of defending premiers Sawtell Saints in the AFL North Coast's top of the table clash at Richardson Park on Saturday.

Despite a strong first half and finish to the game, a quiet third term cost the Magpies dearly as they went down 15-8-98 to 11-10-76 in perfect conditions at Sawtell.

Senior coach Matt Newton told the Port News he was disappointed with the side losing its way in the middle of the match.

"Our guys have an idea now of how much work we've still got to do," he admitted.

"We need to be a bit fitter, a bit stronger and to pull together as a group if we're going to get over the top of Sawtell.

"At three-quarter time, I asked the guys to lift, to forget the scoreboard and to pressure them.

"We did that really well and we won the last quarter, so I guess that is the positive to take out of it."

It was a shocking lapse after half-time that saw the Saints kick seven goals to Port Macquarie's none.

In a blistering third term, Sawtell's captain Luke Matthews repeatedly won the ball out of the centre and had the home side surging forward.

The ball was peppering the Magpie backline and, after withstanding a fair bit of the pressure in the first half, the cracks started to appear.

For the Magpies, Dean Nankevil was impressive all day playing on a wing but running the full length of the ground.

He kicked two goals including one from outside the 50m arc and another from a strong mark deep in the goal mouth.

Jarrod Brian was a solid contributor for the Magpies.

He was given the unenviable task of tagging Sawtell's perennial ball winner Mark Couzens.

Brian stood tall and took the points in their individual battle; however the war was won by the Saints through the use of their fast handball and running game.

In the first half Jesse Schmidt was tremendous for the Magpies, taking countless contested marks and moving the footy forward.

The Magpies took a 10-point lead into half-time through Newton's return and some solid work in defence from Matt Stakelum, Dehne Charry and Steven King.

Another Magpie to return to form was Clayton Meichel at centre half back.

The 'Big Deer' has been held back with his injuries so far this season but toughed it out to play his best game for the year under pressure in the Magpies' backline.

His straight running, second efforts, smothers and tackles were an inspiration to the beaten Magpie outfit.

It was a difficult day for the Magpies' midfield who were without Daniel Butterfield through suspension and lost Shannon Skreja with a work injury that kept him off the field.

This meant a big reshuffle and Newton had to spend the majority of the game on the ball instead of playing up forward and chiming in when he wants to.

Full forward John Bain came crashing back to earth following last week's record haul of 17 goals.

Bain could only manage two majors and was consistently spoiled by the Sawtell fullback with the 'Ivan Drago' haircut.

There was one highlight, when playing in a rare position up the ground, the big forward got his large frame up in the air and took a delightful 'hanger' sitting on the shoulders of an unfortunate Sawtell Saint.

These grabs were unfortunately too few and too far between for the Magpies' forward line with Jacob Hart and Ben Dunlop both having quiet days by their standards.

On the injury front, ruckman Jon Stephens suffered a heavy knock to his leg and was hampered with his movement.

Matt Hensley hurt his quad in the under 18's game and was unable to take his place in the seniors.

Dan Bylsma's hamstrings remain a concern and Jesse Schmidt was less potent in the second half also suffering a minor hamstring complaint.

The good news for the Magpies was the form of Matt Lill in defence, the emergence of Ryan Horton who played his best game yet for the black and whites and the return of coach Newton.

With the extra game under his belt, the Magpies' leader should only get stronger as they aim up to face the Coffs Swans in Port Macquarie next week.

In reserve grade, the Magpies lost 9-5-59 to 3-6-24 despite strong games from Paul Sheldon, Steven Cottom and Anthony Beasely.

The Magpies' reserves just didn't have enough firepower to put points on the board against the experienced defence of Sawtell.

The Mini Pies had a dirty day, going down 31-18-204 to 1-5-11.

It was a tough assignment against the top side.

Anthony Price was terrific and Matt Long continued to impress as he tried all day.

However the Saints' kids had a few too many options and worked hard for each other and the result showed on the scoreboard.

It'll be a big week on the track as the Magpies get set for a return bout with the Coffs Swans.

According to Newton, one of their goals this year is to not lose two games in a row.

This weekend they'll get a chance to avoid that.
Magpies' best: D Nankevil, J Brian, C Miechel, J Schmidt, M Lill

All latest news is on the AFL North Coast website.

There was a period there whilst Chris McKinley was away where no-one was able to take over monitoring the website. It took a while but now there are regular updates of articles and poll items to keep everyone informed about the affairs of AFL in the area.

The publicity officer is currently governing the site and possibly a football administrator might be appointed next year to assist the publicity officer in maintaining the site.

But rest assured the site will be maintained over the break and into 2008- I encourage everyone to check it out!!

Warners Bay Footy Club in the Black Diamond League (Newcastle) is currently seeking players for the 2008 season. The club is based on the shores of Lake Macquarie and offers an excellent standard of football. If any players are moving into the Newcastle area from your League we would be happy to welcome them to our club. Contact Steve May on 0412 524293 or go to www.warnersbay.org.au

Not much traffic on the North Coast thread for a while. North Coast website does a great job of updating all the news and results from the league. I saw Sawtell won the seniors, Port again in the reserves and Sawtell in the thirds. Lets hope 2009 is another big year for the league. Would be good to see Grafton and Numbucca improve a bit.

The league has a number of exciting 16 - 18yr olds coming through. With a number of them in the RAMS and Rising RAMS programs the next 12 mths should be an exciting one for the Region. It will be interesting to see how they develop through the AFL system and whether they are required to re-locate. One would hope that they are able to stay within the region and continue their development.

Magpies hope to soar again

THE Settlers Inn Port Macquarie Magpies have secured the services of feisty on-baller Tim Donohue as coach for the 2009 AFL North Coast season.
Donohue, 27, will share the duties in first grade with club stalwart and life member, Scott Payne, 35.
To add to these two, the highly-respected Scott Abercrombie, who has played for the Magpies over the past two seasons, will take on a specialist coaching role.
He’ll further develop players’ skills and help those new to the game.
Club president Paul Sheldon said the combination would, hopefully, provide plenty of spark for the Magpies, who were looking to challenge the dominant Sawtell in 2009.
“Tim is the sort of player who leads by example, when he hits a pack, he leaves a hole in it,” Sheldon said.
“And Payney is looking to install some discipline into the firsts and is very keen to make sure their season is an enjoyable and successful one.”
Donohoe is making a return to senior football after having to sit out for the past couple of seasons due to work commitments.
“Thanks to Cavalier Homes and my father Rob, I am now in a position to give as much as I can to my football and I’m looking forward to working with Scott (Payne), Paul (Sheldon) and Scott (Abercrombie) and doing my best for the Magpies, which has always been a club that has come to expect success,” Donohoe said.
Donohoe’s career has seen him play at the highest levels in the very strong Golden Rivers League (in Hay), and he has achieved premiership success in Byron Bay as well as a season of club football in Adelaide.
Payne is a life member of the club who coached the senior Magpies outfit from 2002 to 2004.
Donohoe said Payne will be “the sideline eyes for first grade”.
“In Scott we have a past senior coach, 200-game player and a six-time AFL interleague representative,” he explained.
“So, there will be plenty of experience for the side.” “If I can sum up what we’re looking for in 2009 in one word, it would be dedication,” Payne added.

“I really want to see a dedication from the players that pull on the Magpies jumper – at training where they’ll be expected to put in the effort, and dedication to their team mates on and off the field.
“While we won the senior grand final in 2007 under Matt Newton, the reserve graders have put together six premierships in a row and there is an enjoyment about what they do as a playing unit and I want firsts to create their own culture of sacrifice and dedication to their mates and they’ll reap the same rewards.”
The Magpies have also the prospect of adding up to six new experienced players to the roster this season as interest is already peaking for the upcoming season.
The only major losses at this stage look like being Dan Bylsma, Jarrod Brian and the highly-respected Newton through injury problems.
Sheldon will again coach the Magpies’ seconds, looking to extend the run of six premierships with an ageing but skilful list.
The under 18s will be under the tutelage of John Stangherlin, Mark Clark and Craig Carroll.
They’ll look to make a real impact now that some of the traditionally stronger clubs have lost many of their juniors because age has rendered them ineligible for the under 18s.
Training for the Magpies starts at 6pm tomorrow at Stuarts Park in Port Macquarie.
All existing and new players are more than welcome to attend. For any enquiries, phone club president Paul Sheldon on 0417 567 675.
