National Draft Pick #17 - Michael Apeness

Happy with this pick up. A strong contested mark, with an accurate set shot, as well as being a monster.... looks like the exact sort many of us were hoping we would pick up

So these should be available at the team store next year?

Shocking news, I know. But the Perth Glory monkey, Wildcats cat (probably – who watches NBL?), Johnny the Docker, and Ric the Rock Eagle are all........

one person.

It's appalling.

I remember attending a derby a few years ago and the pre-match stuff included both mascots playing fisticuffs, maybe they just got an extra that day.

It kinda makes sense though, one guy obviously could do it all and I don't think there's much demand for sporting mascots these days, very niche market I imagine :p

In very good shape with Moller, Clarke, Apeness and Griffin. With Gumby and Apeness coming in could Zarke be developed as a defender to man up the resting ruck forwards? His body work in marking contests around the ground has really improved and he does really well at getting across and killing the footy in marking contests. He also is pretty good with his decision making and kicking.

Similar to Mitch Clark during his AA-Squad year in the ruck and floating around half-back? That's exactly the kind of player we would need if we wanted to further the press up towards the opponents defence, someone highly mobile to mark the high ball kicked out under pressure just backward of centre.

This reminds me, on my walk from Fed square to the 'G on grand final day, I turn around and who is walking next to me but the guy who played the mascot in Freo's Virgin Film festival video! I was not star struck but I was already kind of drunk and this made me happy.

Looks like he's a Dockers support then because I assume the fill-in would be the one getting towelled up.

They say there's three shameful lowlights in Eagles history. One are two, in that order, are obviously Dale Kickett letting out a decade of derby hate on Phil Read. The other is their drug culture in the 200s.

And the third is this.

Re Clarke. We need more goals, and I don't think resting ruckman have done too much damage against us. But he has done little as a forward.
The lack of impact forward was sort of my thoughts, I feel he could do some damage with his athletic ability and height killing contests in defence and running off slower ruck types and it just means that if one of the other young talls develop we can retain Zac in the team.

The reason you play your resting ruckman as a key forward is mostly because they usually can't play anywhere else.

Zac Clarke could play anywhere on the ground when he's not rucking.

Except on the wings, half forward or half back. It would be nerve wracking to watch him in a back pocket and we have specialists for forward pockets.
Zac is a ruckman and that's it.

He played as a tall midfielder/winger quite often when Harvey was coaching, and played pretty well. I also think he could play the loose man in defence if he was asked to. That's the easiest spot on the field to play, which is why they always start Irish recruits off there.
