Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

A full rebuild shouldn't take 5 years plus. Surely. Even Port when they were getting hammered in 2010, 2011, 2012 turned over 90% of their list and 2013 rebounded to nearly make finals or made finals i cant remember and 2014 went deep into the finals. We somehow cant even manage to get close to finals after 7 years. 5 under the same coach. The club should be hauled in front of the media to demand answers frankly.
I don't recall Port Power doing a massive list turnover like us and they already had elite youngsters in Boak and Gray coming through and they didn't rebuild during the 2 COVID-19 seasons. The question the media should be asking is why can't Nicks see he is playing guys who aren't up to AFL standard for so long and senior players who continue to struggle but never get dropped.

The board, representing the members, extended a coach that is now 3-6-1.

If the board is now accepting of a season over before the end of May, then there is clear misalignment with the boards objectives against that of the members that put them forward.

If the coach isn’t removed, then the board must be held accountable by the members.

they accepted a season over before the end of April. There is no way we were ever coming back from 4 games down. Our wins now are nothing more than 'putting lipstick on a pig, its still a pig'

We've found that sweet spot where we're not winning s**t but are competitive enough generally to sell (false) hope that we're not far away
The team has little development or improvement left in it because Nicks refuses to replace under-performing pieces and we're basically relying on an amazing performance from a few players like Rankine, Dawson or Tex to get us up and over the better sides.

We clearly have an over reliance on Dawson, Rankine, Walker, Crouch and Laird to lead the way. He is reluctant to develop players and he is unwilling to move past low ceiling mature bodies. Sorry role players, sorry impact players, sorry professional line runners....I am lost under the different excuses he has.

He has built a clique which will dampen any talk from junior members and support him when the board comes around

'' yeah yeah Nicksys knowledge is fantastic its these stupid kids who let us down''

Nope. That wasn’t the question.

Original post was saying that Nicks is trying to create a coaching matrix as if that was a bad thing. I said that’s basically what modern footy is. Coaches go in with their plan A, then they have a series of other tactical changes they’ll make depending on scenario. Essentially if x happens, we do y. Effective game day coaching is about knowing when to pull those levers.

I don’t think Nicks can effectively do that, but coaches aren’t on game day pulling creative coaching moves out of nowhere that they haven’t already planned for like you’re suggesting.

How did you cope with Nicks throwing Dawson to CHF in the last quarter?

Confused or in denial?

I just had a look and the only unforced change Nicks made between this latest game vs Collingwood and the first match against Collingwood in 2023...

...is swapping Schoenberg for McHenry as the sub

All the other changes were forced due to injury or list management decisions

Most of these forced changes would have been reversed if the relevant players were available

Thilthorpe -> Himmelberg
Milera -> Nankervis
Doedee -> Hamill
Pedlar -> Cook
Sloane -> Crouch
Murray -> Keane

I would guess that his preferred best 22 has changed by maybe 1 or 2 players. No wonder the results are so similar

At this stage two things are fact:
  • Nicks has a contract for next season so has no reason or excuse for unduly focusing on short-term results…building to a premiership contender should be the only goal
  • at 3-1-6 both statistically and practically speaking we’re little to no chance of playing finals this year

Is the club - led by Nicks as coach - able to assess the situation and now start building for next year?

If experience is an essential ingredient of a premiership contender squad then will we start/accelerate the process of getting games into the players who are most likely to be a part of such a squad and stop wasting games on those who won’t by reason of age (Smith) or quality (McHenry).

We know nothing will change with week to week selections, regardless of ladder position

Because gifting games would destroy the successful culture we've established

We don't want to be stuck down the bottom for years on end like perennial basketcases like Melbourne and Richmond

If Silvers truly thinks Nicks is a Premiership coach then he must have a timeline for this

Ok I'm taking the piss as much as Silvers is

But imagine he does : does he ask Nicks how this will happen or does he accept linear growth is enough?

To your point IF YOU BELIEVE that a flag is ours at the end of 2026 then you have 60 games to do it

Has Nicks indicated who gets those 60 games?

I would like to see at least 4 players hit the 50 game mark ( barring major injury) by the end of 2026

Lets see if it happens

Thete needs to be a root and branch overhaul of our cb set ups and around the ground set ups..playing personel is part of it (ruck and on ballers) and we are starting to get more dynamic players in there. But its the coaching setups and the ineffective counters to what the oppo do that just happens week after week.
It starts and finish's with the selection of Crouch !!

What got him a run of games in 2023, and in his own words "his work-on" .......he now has reverted to the player who couldn't get picked

Always gets possessions .....the team will never progress whilst he's in the midfield ....as David King said recently, if you can't play multiple roles, you're a dead AFL Footballer

Nicks has to recognise this .....OR, he's tanking for an elite MID in the Draft

We have 4 x best 22 players injured .....the depth cupboard in very thin, despite call for players who are clearly not ready, and won't make a scintilla of difference

The Club has erred by not chasing another Ruckman .....Rachelle is playing "average" footy and devoid of any creative play

Yes, they're being aggressive on the trade front ......IMO a bit slow to react

Yeah the reason Nicks is coaching shit is because he’s tanking 🤣

So let’s stick with the same spuds rather than developing players…. Besides Schoenberg not ready? Berry?

Wouldn’t you like to see Taylor developing in the AFL or McHenry?

Nicks isn't that deep a thinker. Crouch was always going to revert once he'd been given a contract. We should have let Crouch walk as a FA and we'd have gotten a third. Now we need to try and force him and/or Laird out whilst both are at their lowest value.

Yze looks like bullet dodged but what we have isn't much better.
