Especially because the money is spread over three years for cap reasons.
Reading that his p.a. salary surely won’t qualify for any meaningful compo?

It will be pretty borderline if we get compo or not. He will probably be paid the same as players like Jack silvagni are, more then guys like Newnes, Curnow, Marchbank, Plowman and Newman and way under the good players. It’ll be tight because I imagine there is a big pool of players in the bottom paid ~40% over 25 years old where an extra $20k or so will make the difference. His age also hurts our chances.

I imagine Waites contract had massive incentives considering his injury history so it’s probably not surprising we missed out with him.

It’s one list spot for a bloke that hasn’t had any serious injuries to date and won’t be on a big contract. Same age Lake was when he went to the Hawks on a two year deal.

Surprised such a long deal is on the table. Not played at the top level for a year, and he'll be 34 when that contract runs out. Big gamble by the Bulldogs.

You seen the Dogs defence lately? It's not a gamble at all. Smart business.

I think it's a massive risk personally, I can understand teams would have to pitch at least 2 years to sign him.

Smart move, he is healthy and fairly durable.

Wood played less than half of all HnA matches in 3 out of his last 4 seasons. Jones will come cheaper. Some nice moneyball by the dogs while they have a cracking midfield and Hagan on the rise.

One of the articles a week or so ago mentioned the third year was purely for salary cap reasons. May be a case of he will likely play for 2 years but have some money spread into a 3rd year on the rookie list if needed.

Pretty sure GWS did that for Joel Patfull one year

so why exactly are carlton going to get compensation for the dogs recruiting jones? its their fault they kept an ineligible player on their list. no other clubs get compensation for delisted free agents or retired players.

Carlton didn’t delist Jones and retired players generally aren’t allowed back in the league for 18 months. He is moving as an unrestricted free agent.

Compensation is fair for a player we otherwise would have retained if not for rules out of our hands.

It’s extremely long odds he will generate a compensation pick (unless it’s a dodgy deal from the AFL) based on his age.
of course its a dodgy deal from the AFL, the compensation equation, like the priority pick equation is intentionally obscured.

Do you think Carlton, after the way Jones left the club, would release his contract for nothing when they could make him sit it out until the mid-season draft? this stinks of the AFL stitching up a third or so for the blues and WB getting a backman to fill in until Darcy is ready
