A few years after having Aussie Grant Balfour as a closer, the A's have another Australian, Liam Hendriks, to come out of the bullpen this season. Hendriks was signed by the Twins on his 18th birthday and debuted for the Twins pitching for the Gulf Coast League Twins. Hendriks made the 2009 World Baseball Classic roster, and then pitched for the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League and the Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League in Class-A. He was called up to the Twins from AAA Rochester on 5 September 2011 and was named a starting pitcher for the Twins for 2012 after a successful spring training.

He was designated for assignment by the Twins on 5 December 2013 and was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on 13 December 2013. Just before Christmas, he was claimed off waivers again by the Orioles, then was designated for assignment on 19 February 2014 so the Orioles could claim Ubaldo Jimenez. The Blue Jays claimed Hendriks off waivers on 21 February 2014, making his MLB debut for the Blue Jays on 23 May 2014, with a 3-2 win over the Athletics. He bounced up and down between the minors and the majors until he was traded (together with Erik Katz) to the Royals on 28 July 2014 in exchange for Danny Valencia (now his teammate at Oakland).

He made a start for the Royals against the Twins on 27 August 2014 but was designated for assignment on 24 October to make way for Moises Sierra. On 30 October 2014, the Royals traded him back to the Blue Jays for Santiago Nessy. He appeared exclusively out of the bullpen for the Blue Jays, accumulating a 5-0 record, 2.92 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings.

The Athletics traded for Hendriks on 20 November 2015, giving up Jesse Chavez as the A's looked to rebuild a bullpen that blew up any chance the A's had of making the post-season last year with too many blown opportunities.

You guys gained a solid gamer in Chris Coughlan from my Cubs today, i think he'll do very well if he gets his chance to play everyday.

We'll probably have him only for the year, though. As he's a free agent at the end of the season.

It's probably a good deal (at least for the A's) as the A's needed strengthening at the skill positions. Not sure where he'll play but as a utility, he is an upgrade on the likes of Sogard.

It's likely that the A's will look to trade someone away with Coughlan coming across from the Cubs.

FYI, Brooks was a trade from the Royals (the A's traded Ben Zobrist to the Royals in exchange for Brooks and Sean Manaea, who will probably see MLB time this year as a starting pitcher). He ended the season with an ERA of 6.71 over 51 innings. He has a 92mph fastball, change, slider, curve combo.

It leaves the A's with seven starting pitchers projected to play at Triple-A or higher. One of the seven is Henderson Alvarez, who won't play until May at the earliest. The other is Jarrod Parker, whom is being handled with kid gloves to avoid complications with his TJS.

The trade probably (almost certainly) means that Sogard starts the season at Nashville. He has AAA options left so the A's don't risk losing him if they designate him for assignment, and he's offensively challenged, so the A's would probably take the upgrade in hitting over the possible decline in defence in swapping Coughlan for Sogard.

Hahn off to Triple A Nashville

Doubront becomes the fifth man in the rotation, at least to open the season. I think the A's are expecting Henderson Alvarez and Sean Manaea to claim spots in the rotation by June, which would send Rich Hill and Doubront to the bullpen.

Sonny Gray scratched from the opening day start and then Felix Doubront goes on the disabled list with an elbow issue (the A's call it an elbow sprain). Eric Surkamp will fill in for Doubront at the back end of the rotation, while Rich Hill will be the opening day starter.

Doubront gone for the season with a torn UCL, requiring Tommy John surgery to repair. Bad luck for him, as he was either going to be the fifth starter for a while (whilst Henderson Alvarez got back up to speed) or the long reliever.

Great to hear the news today the the A's will be staying in Oakland with a new stadium announcement. Location to be shared later this year. The GSW are on the move to San Fran, and the Raiders gone, so great to keep the A's.

Susan Slusser reports that the A's are interested in Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna after the Marlins hung up the "for sale" sign on their roster. The A's want to add a right handed batter/corner outfielder while accommodating Khris Davies at the DH spot (meaning that Ryon Healy is up for trade). Yelich is guaranteed $46.5 million over the next four years, while Ozuna (27 this week) is a free agent after the 2019 season and projected to make more than $10 million in arbitration.

Ichiro Suzuki also reached out to the A's to see if there was any interest in Suzuki joining the A's, given he played for Bob Melvin in 2003-2004 when Melvin was managing the Mariners. Slusser reports the A's are unlikely to be that interested given that Suzuki is left handed.

Interesting to see the A's linked with the likes of Yelich and Ozuna. Although the A's finished last in the AL West, the A's looked pretty good in the second half of the season when the A's dumped most of the older players and turned to youth to lead the way.

An Arizona grand jury indicted A's catcher Bruce Maxwell on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct stemming from an arrest on 28 October in Scottsdale, Arizona. His arraignment is scheduled for next Tuesday in Maricopa County Superior Court, when he'll be asked to enter a plea.

Allegedly, Maxwell threatened a food delivery driver with a gun when she dropped off his food order. The driver called police and, according to police reports, Maxwell showed signs of intoxication during his arrest, used excessive profanity and made "anti-police" statements.

Maxwell was the only MLB player to kneel during the US national anthem, with the support of the A's organisation.

As he's projected to be the starting catcher, it's probable the A's could be looking to bring in a new catcher during the off-season, depending on his legal status.
