John Butcher (Past Players)

how's the big fella tracking? haven't seen him since Christmas.

injury free I hope?

Primus spoke about him a couple weeks ago, mentioned he has a few minor ongoing back issues, but nothing thats impacting him anymore. Pretty much business as usual.

The clubs website has him having gained 5kg, which is giving him a decent frame I would think.

Its only me guessing, but he 'may' get a taste in the NAB, and then there a fair chance he will get the chance to hold down a key forward spot at the Magpies to start the season, which would be good for his development.

Do you know how he's enjoying it over here ?

Sounds like not much has changed then, was looking in good shape then :thumbsu:

Loving it over there from what I can gather, last year was a bit of a battle just because he was barely able to train but he seems to be enjoying it all.

thinking of popping over for a visit in the coming weeks (about to start a months worth of annual leave)

That's all good to here. Glad he's enjoying it as he could become an immensely imprtant player for us in years to come. I'm hoping him and Trengove both keep developing and are able to hold down the CHF/B spots.

Come to Alberton on a Wednesday morning and you'll be able to see him going round at training.

Good to hear he's happy here.

What's happening with Butcher? Will he play this year?

Has been going ok without dominating in SANFL but has been in the 'A's all year ... was expected to get a game sooner rather than later.

... but injured his hammy last week at training and missed SANFL last weekend. It is likely he'll miss 3-4 weeks ... so could count him out for debut in 2011.

JOHN Butcher is jokingly nicknamed "The Future" by his Port Adelaide team-mates.

When he was drafted by the Power at No. 8 in the 2009 national draft, the 197cm stringbean was immediately dubbed as the second coming of the club's greatest key forward, Warren Tredrea.

It has taken a long time for Port fans to understand why.

Was at the woodville Primary school graduation last night, John Butcher was there to present the students with their certificate and school value awards, was invited by the students as a guest of honour and accepted (he had been working with the school as a part of the power's community activities). Spoke a bit about his school days and gave some advice to the students on handing the change of primary to high school. Absolute gentleman of a man.

After some impressive early season SANFL form, Johns end of season AFL form revitalised the whole club. It gave the club hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel and its possible that a future star was born. He kicked 17 goals in 10 matches at SANFL level, including 12 in his first 5 matches. An AFL debut was on the horizon before a hamstring injury kept him out for 5 weeks.

Another strong performance in the SANFL in Round 17 saw him on the verge of making his debut, which he did against Hawthorn in Round 21. He was impressive with 6 marks and a goal in the huge loss, but it was the falling week that a star was made. He picked up 5 marks and 6 goals from 6 kicks against the Bulldogs, slotting goals from all sorts of angles. He followed that up with 5 marks and 4 goals in the close loss against Essendon, impressing with his contested marking.

It was a debut which put life back into the club and hope back into the supporters eyes. His contested marking, unusually straight kicking and passion for the contest was a joy to watch. 2012 will need to be a year where John harnesses that raw potential and starts to become the marketable focal point up forward that the club needs. An injury free year should help John achieve this.

As his football has done in just four senior games for Port Adelaide, John Butcher's passionate words make a compelling statement as to why the Power are not the basket case they have been made out to be.

Butcher, fast growing a reputation as one of the game's most exciting young key forwards, said his loyalty to Port for giving him his AFL lifeline made it easy last year to ignore strong overtures from his home State of Victoria and stay on with his battling club.

Notes:
After an empthatic ending to the 2011 season, the club and its supporters expected big things from Butch in 2012. Unfortuantely he failed to live up to those lofty expectations, with a hip injury putting a premature end to his season and a restriction on his influence. He played a couple of good matches in the first half of the season, with a 4 goal effort against Adelaide in Round 5 the peak of his year. But, he struggled with positioning and an ability to find the football regularly. If John can stay fit through the pre season and put on some strength, hopefully 2013 will be the season where John becomes a regular contributor at AFL level.

After a long injury lay-off, Butcher is fit and ready to go. He'll play in an internal SANFL trial with the hope of being ready for AFL duties in round 1.

Butcher set for return this weekend

JOHN Butcher is likely to return to football as soon as this weekend according to senior coach Ken Hinkley.

Butcher has been in recovery mode since undergoing hip surgery after the 2012 season.

The enigmatic forward broke onto the AFL stage at the end of 2011 with several standout performances in his first four matches, before struggling through his follow up season; a case of the dreaded ‘second year blues’.

Butcher's first game in a long time went well but it looks like he'll play a few weeks at SANFL level before being considered for AFL duties.

JOHN Butcher last kicked a football in anger in July last year.

He was booked in for hip surgery following Balfours Showdown XXXIII and since then has undergone eight months of rehabilitation.

Often striking a lonely figure as he walked laps of Alberton Oval during pre-season training in November and December, his recovery gained pace after the playing group returned from its Christmas break.

John, along with Moore, Trengove and Carlile, have re-signed. Great to see that he signed so early on in the season.

25-year-old Carlile, who would have been eligible for free agency at season’s end, signed a four-year contract extension committing him to Port Adelaide until the end of 2017. 22-year-old Trengove and 21-year-olds Moore and Butcher have committed to two-year contract extensions, keeping them at Alberton to at least the end of 2015.
