Coach Has Ken Hinkley Been Found Out?

Wasn't Scott still contracted after 11 seasons without silverware?
Chris Scott was our coach for 10 seasons without silverware, before winning the flag in 2022.
Mick Malthouse was Collingwood coach for 10 years without silverware, before winning the flag in 2010.

Both copped far more scrutiny than Longmire and Hinkley.

He was contracted again till the end of 2024 in May 22, there was a possibility he would go 12 seasons without silverware.

Our board were confident in Scott being able to win us more silverware hence the re-signing.
Also, you do know Scott was prepared to walk at the end of 2021?
He was a very realistic chance of going to Carlton with Brian Cook.

Port have won two finals in the last nine seasons under Ken Hinkley.
Despite this Koch gave him a two year contract extension in August this year.
Ken ticks all the boxes at an AFL controlled club.

I know he has two more years but I think unless they make a Prelim in 2924 that might swap to Carr.
Bold of you to assume we'll consider booting him after 912 years, should probably give him the full 1000 to build the list how he likes it

Longmire and Scott both had the early success though. That undoubtedly carried them, as did making grand final(s) since.

Longmire has won 8 knockout finals over the journey. Scott has won 10. Hinkley won 3 by the end of 2014, but has won none in the 9 seasons each (0-4). From that perspective I can understand Port fans frustration.

Cats supporters were calling for Chris Scott's head up until last year.
  • only won 2011 because of Bombers list
  • squandering a decade of top 4 appearances
  • can't get the job done in finals etc etc
They got the flag then have dropped off.
Maybe things will click next year.. who knows! If they get the 2024 flag Hinkley will prob retire after that.
Some were, but firstly he got the Flag in 2011 so that's instant cred, then a tendency to go L-W-L as we'd lose the 1st finals about 7 times in a row. But a GF in 2020, blew 2021 with a bad fade-out at KP against the Dees which saw them take top spot, and the Flag in 2022. Bad year this year but most Cat fans know there's a re-set with upcoming retirements this year and the next couple.

Not a lot of clubs will be too harsh on a dual-Premiership coach. But Ken, (even though he's a Cats man and was an assistant for two of Bomber's Flags), he's not reached a GF yet, and has lost home PF's to miss out on a single GF appearance. I thought this year may be it, but it's a damning finish to go 3-6 to end it. Bit like the Dees last year, from 10-0 to 16-8 by season's end in straight sets.

That's a good point about the home finals. Geelong famously blew their only "true" home final under Scott in 2013, but then did at least win the semi and push the upcoming dynasty Hawks to the last second.

You could call hosting interstate sides at the G as "moderate" home finals for Geelong, and under Scott we always won those in semis. The other golden chance was the 2016 prelim Vs Sydney at the G, but on reflection that Cats side was pretty average. The rest were all losing interstate finals or finals against MCG tenants at the G.

For Longmire he has similarly lead the Swans to finals victory in ones they should win, except for a couple of grand finals as favourites. But once again these were "away" grand finals against Victorian teams, so a mitigating factor. Otherwise for EF, QF, SF, PF - only losing pretty tricky games generally.

Hinkley and Fagan definitely have the worst finals losses on record of this lot. Home, straight sets sometimes, not making a grand final. Surely Fagan at least redeems himself a bit this weekend. It would be disastrous if he didn't and I'd see no reason to go easier on him than Hinkley.

The pressure will be on Goodwin this week.

He will get punished because he was ALMOST there in both finals.

Nobody - least of all the commentators demanding his resigning in August - legitimately expected anything better from Ken (despite finishing higher than Melbourne and being on track for a home final for the majority of the year).

The contrast in both coach's press conferences was startling.

Goodwin was hurting for himself, his players and his fans.

Ken was smirking when he wasn't defensive, blaming any number of reasons beyond his control (like injuries).

Port will then wait for Kane to come out of the woodwork on Monday to - rhetorically - ask "what more could the coaching staff do?" and declare it was a "brave" choice for Ken to play injured players throughout the season.

Kane will also blame the playing group, ignoring how failing to rest injured stars leaves them vulnerable to further damage and exposes their teammates on the ground to insufficient run-and-carry.

Ken, of course, will say nothing to defend his players despite his "fatherly" connection to them.

We are all just trapped waiting for the nightmare to end.

It’s only going to end of Koch goes, complete disconnection to the club for me.

Will fan boy Whateley say anything?

The little dickweed tried to deflect by having a crack at Goodwin instead (who won a ******* flag 2 years ago).
King was having none of it.

Fascinating conversation between Whateley and King about Hinkley

WHATELEY: “Home-and-away Simon (Goodwin).”

KING: “You don’t use this rationale with Ken Hinkley. Not once will you use this rationale with Ken Hinkley. You’ll use the 13 home-and-away games on me, in a minute. You can’t use it for one and not the other.”

WHATELEY: “Yeah, well, they’ve got totally different issues, though. They’re not set in the way Melbourne is set.”

KING: “But you were saying we have to sign Ken in the home-and-away. That’s the same rationale.”

WHATELEY: “Yeah, well, I felt that they had set him the task and he passed the task. They had more personnel issues in the home and away.”

KING: “In the end, that’s the same argument. Home-and-away. Ken has never done it in the finals series. What’s he done in the finals series that gives you so much positivity and joy?”

WHATELEY (pause): “What kind of conversation would you have with Kysaiah Pickett on the back of that game?”

There is an incredible amount of people from all clubs sticking the boot in. People love to laugh at Port, rightly so.

Lol dude look at the club you support. You're 12 wins out of your last 84 games!

You can't stick the boots into anyone without tripping over your own feet. How's the AFL assistance package coming along? I think people have given up laughing at your pathetic club because they're just waiting for them to fold and it's like making fun of someone with a terminal illness.

What was Josh Carrs role in the last two finals losses?
When they won a dozen in a row he was lauded as the brains trust of the coaching dept that made all the on field calls while Kenny gave encouragement on the bench.

Why hasn’t he taken any heat this finals series?
Anything that goes well is the players

Anything that goes wrong is Mr Hinkley.
