Following on from a point raised in another thread by Duff regarding the size of the Lauderdale Oval, I've decided to investigate further with the assistance of the technilogical marvel that is Google Earth.

Following in this thread are a snapshot of each ground and here I have listed the dimensions of the grounds from longest to shortest (NB I utilised the ruler function on Google Earth and measured to the extremities of the green bit on each ground, so not necessarily the measurements of the actual playing arena):

Windsor Park 179.86m x 124.79m
Aurora Stadium 172.30m x 143.72m
Youngtown Oval 167.62m x 131.77m
KGV 167.27m x 144.05m
Devonport Oval 166.68m x 131.14m
Bellerive Oval 166.30m x 133.03m
North Hobart 163.28m x 111.48m
TCA Ground 151.21m x 134.24m
Lauderdale 140.11m x 121.24m
West Park 134.35m x 126.95m (??? Didn't think West Park was that short, however it was the only ground where the picture was a bit blurry and therefore the integrity of those measurements could certainly be questioned)

Christ Ken you must have more time on your hands than me!!!

Based on that here are the results.

Aurora Stadium 172.30m x 143.72m 24,762.95 square metres
Windsor Park 179.86m x 124.79m = 22,444 square metres
KGV 167.27m x 144.05m 24,095 square metres
Bellerive Oval 166.30m x 133.03m 22,122.89 square metres
Youngtown Oval 167.62m x 131.77m 22,087 square metres
Devonport Oval 166.68m x 131.14m 21,858.41 square metres
TCA Ground 151.21m x 134.24m 20,298.43 square metres
North Hobart 163.28m x 111.48m 18,202.45 square metres
West Park 134.35m x 126.95m 17.055.73 square metres
Lauderdale 140.11m x 121.24m 16,986 square metres

Based on that Lauderdale Oval is 2/3 the size Aurora Stadium!

I do have too much time on my hands Duff!

Unfortunately your logic is not quite sound in calculating the surface area of each ground, as none of them are square.

While it is a rough calculation the formula to follow is:
pi*a*b where pi = 3.14159265 a = half length of major axis (horizontal) and b = half length of minor axis (vertical)

Therefore:
Aurora Stadium 172.30m x 143.72m= 19,449sqm
KGV 167.27m x 144.05m= 18,924sqm
Windsor Park 179.86m x 124.79m= 17,628sqm
Bellerive Oval 166.30m x 133.03m= 17,375sqm
Youngtown Oval 167.62m x 131.77m= 17,347sqm
Devonport Oval 166.68m x 131.14m= 17,168sqm
TCA Ground 151.21m x 134.24m= 15,942sqm
North Hobart 163.28m x 111.48m= 14,296sqm
West Park 134.35m x 126.95m= 13,396sqm
Lauderdale 140.11m x 121.24m= 13,342sqm

See if you can top that for too much time on your hands!

Got me a beauty there Ken.

Perhaps with the Lauderdale ground in mind they should play 16 a side and drop the wings?

I wonder if we will follow other states and rationalise the grounds in the different regions ,otherwise we will not be able to see the best grounds properly utilised and we will continue to play football on grounds with sub standard surfaces, and mediocre facilities that will keep supporters away.

Has anything been done to rebuild/replace the old grandstand at KGV after the fire?

Building has started on the new grand stand - it will only have half the seating capacity of the old one but will have a glassed off area with corporate seating and function rooms.

Due for completion by the end of the year.

Come on mate what's wrong with the TCA? It's a beauty.

I think I read once in some publication that it was about 175 x 140-something.

170m x 140m - pretty close :thumbsu:

160m x 130m I think it was.

Bellerive Oval 166.30m x 133.03m
Used to be 156m x 134m in the Statewide League days, might have been altered a little in the last 10 years though.

North Hobart 163.28m x 111.48m
154m x 112m.

TCA Ground 151.21m x 134.24m
Was 149m x 143m about 6 or 7 years ago.
They did extend the length a bit when they moved the boundary lines closer to the fences a couple of years back though.

Lauderdale 140.11m x 121.24m
I figure it to be slightly shorter than the TCA and also narrower.

West Park 134.35m x 126.95m
147m x 124m. Deceptive looking with the cycle track around it.

Nice work on the figures Kingpin. Maybe the Google Earth ruler is a little more reliable than I was expecting.

Based on all that, I'd imagine Lauderdale Oval will see a lot of flooding!
