Draw Statistics

I wonder what the shortest period of time for a team to record a 3rd draw is? I'd imagine if GWS get another draw in the next year they would probably take that record.

Here are some interesting examples of clubs involved in a number of draws in a short space of time:

Carlton were involved in quite a run of draws in the years around World War 1. The Blues drew against South in Round 2 1913, Collingwood in Round 1 1914, the Swans again in Round 4 1914 and Fitzroy in Round 1 1915. The Blues repeated the drawn Round 1 result against the Lions in 1917. Fitzroy themselves drew a match in Round 3 1916 against Collingwood, making it three years of successive draws for the Lions.

Having not drawn since 1922, St Kilda developed a taste for tying matches in World War 2. The Saints drew against North Melbourne in Round 2 1943, Essendon in Round 6 1944 and Hawthorn in Round 15 1944.

Carlton drew 4 matches in 3 years in the early 1950s. The Blues played stalemates against the Saints in Round 16 1950, the Lions in Round 16 1951, the Demons in Round 12 1952 and the Swans in Round 14 of the same year.

The Geelong team of the early 1960s must have tested their supporters nerves. The Cats drew against Richmond in Round 9 1960, North Melbourne in Round 8 1961, against Carlton in the 1962 Preliminary Final (the Blues winning the controversial replay by 5 points), against their GF opponents Hawthorn in Round 7 1963 and a Round 15 1964 match between the premiers of 1962 & 1963 resulted in a draw between Essendon and Geelong.

Brisbane, if counting the records of the Bears and Lions together, drew in Round 10 1996 against Geelong, Round 21 1997 against Port Adelaide and again against Port Adelaide in Round 12 1998, a rare example of teams drawing in successive meetings.

St Kilda had another run of draws in the early 2010s. The Saints drew against Hawthorn in Round 17 2010, drew that year's Grand Final against Collingwood only to be smashed by the Magpies in the replay, and again drew in Round 2 1911 against the Richmond Tigers.

Bulldogs have been involved in heaps. Off the top of my head.

Pies 35 points down in round 12, 1995. Bulldogs kicked the opening two goals of the final quarter to get 35 points up. It was all Collingwood after that who came back to draw. This game was famous for Dermie kicking a clear behind that was amazingly paid as a goal.

Bulldogs 20 points down with seven minutes to go against Richmond in 2008. This game was famous for Nathan Brown celebrating as the final siren sounded, before realising it finished in a draw.

Hawks v Bulldogs, round 4 of 1996. It was the weekend before Martin Bryant went on a killing rampage in Port Arthur. Bulldogs were up by five goals with ten minutes to go. This game is famous for Pritchard running into an open goal 15m out in the dying stages only to miss his shot at goal, kicking a behind to level the scores.

Bulldogs v Saints in 2007. Saints were up by five goals during the final quarter. Wayde Skipper kicked a behind to give the Bulldogs a one point lead with a minute remaining. Jason Gram then played on from full back, took two bounces, and kicked an incredible 105m torpedo that kept going and going and going, before being marked by Kozzi 55m from goal. His kick was offline, a behind to level the scores.

One of the strangest scoring draws took place in Round 2 1911 in a game between Geelong and Melbourne at Corio Bay that was clearly affected by the breeze:

Geelong 0.1 5.5 5.5 7.12-54 drew Melbourne 4.5 4.5 7.12 7.12-54

The Cats' ability to score 0.1 against the wind in the first quarter was all that saved them from defeat against the Demons.

Are there any country/regional/suburban leagues that still have a replay if their grand final is drawn?

All relatively modern players, with Moore and Nankervis finishing earliest in 1983. Have to go back to George Bisset (207 games, #41, 1974) for a player finishing in the 70's.
Interested if you can run the same list for most games before their first career draw? Tarkyn Lockyer would be up there, he would’ve only played five or six more games after his first draw (QB 2010)

Sneaks into the top 20 then but I was expecting him to be much closer to the top!

Surprised Presti hadn’t played in a draw before that same match, must’ve missed our draw with the Dogs in the late 90s.

Intrigued if you can come up with a list of most games decided by 6 points or less without ever playing in a draw? Just to see who has come closest without actually nabbing one.

3 minutes response time, Ron! In your heyday you'd have had that up in less than a minute!!
