A very strange story! Perhaps elements of it are true, but certainly nobody with that name (or anything too close to it) played senior football in the VFL. I also searched the Football Record for the surname and found nothing.
It does seem a bit hard to believe that someone would learn to play football in his spare time while serving in the War and then made it to the VFL (when he would have been about 30).
I also can't find anything in the Army records that backs up this story. Wikipedia says the Sunshine Coast League only started in 1970, which (if that's correct) doesn't match either.
