We're entering a very busy period on this board with the draft and player movement periods fast approaching.

Us board mods have a lot on our plates and whilst we do not want to, we are not going to hesitate to infract or hand out board bans for repeat offenders. Please do not force our hands here.

Thank you.

Why is McKay supposedly leaving?

It can't be for more money because North have plenty of cap space and have said they want him to stay, although they may value pick 3 more than McKay.

Is it for more success? That would rule out Essendon who have been touted as his most likely destination. North also appear with Clarkson and their talent to be on the rise.

So he goes to Essendon for no more money and given history, probably no more success? The whole thing just doesn't make sense

I will love if he nominates Essendon….and then parish nominates someone else.

Parish really hold so much leverage because of this!!!

The only part I don't support is Northern academies shouldn't give draft access to sons of three hundred game four time premiership heroes.

That isn't growing the game, and isn't what academies were or are for. It is just corrupt.

Nick Blakey could've been a North Melbourne or Brisbane Lions father-son player but chose to stay in Sydney through his academy connection. If Marcus Ashcroft had stayed at Suns in some official capacity both Will and Levi in future would have been in Suns colors. This is just swings n roundabouts depending on player n family situations.

Still a long way to go before we find out whether 1) Cooper Hodge is any good 2) if he'll pursue footy 3) if he wants to stay in QLD or go to his dad's club. The only thing going in our favor is he's apparently a Lions supporter and part of Lions academy for last few years.

Hodge clan chose to move up and settle in QLD hence the connection with the club is still continuing. If he moves back to Victoria say next year, none of these discussions matter.

Kangas are far from on the rise

Caro on Footy Classified seemed to suggest he doesn't even have a contract offer on the table from North it followed Clarko stating they want to keep McKay.

Because they want him gone. Compo madness.

He and his manager put off talks at the start of the season until now. He had an offer on the table for a long time before that. Now the season is over I'm sure the club are back in discussions with his manager or they've been told he wants to leave.

Isn't that how it was designed? These are genuine Queenslanders who have been brought into our game. Hopefully, unlike previous GC top 10 picks, maybe they might actually stay.

This is nothing like certain clubs trying to take Victorians or Tasmanians and access them through academies and claiming they are growing the game.

Ahem Blakey, Sanders, Hodge. Ahem.
Blakey is a Victorian? You might want to tell him.
Academies were sold as a means to grow the game. Northern clubs get special access as part of that growth process.
They've set up the highest level of elite junior football you can play in NSW from almost nothing. The number of NSW players coming into the league recently has consistently grown. Are they not doing that?
The idea that you are introducing AFL to the son of a 300 game four time premiership hero is ludicrous on its face.
They provided a pathway to the AFL for him in the city he grew up in. Ask Paul Roos how his kids did with the NSW football structure. Or the NSW players who moved interstate to play before being drafted.
Brisbane should not have priority access to Cooper under and circumstances. It is not what academies were designed to do, and it is not part of what the AFL promised when they were introduced.
Do you have a copy of these very specific promises the AFL made?

If this is the case it would seem the club are willing to sabotage the next couple of years for long term gain.

Which is fine, as long as we don’t hear the club continue to bleat how they need more help to make them competitive on the field.

The past ten years have shown that the kangas will never be able to attract a-grade talent through free agency/trading. Their big hope of building a premiership list is to stack it with as many high draft picks as possible. They're exploring every possible option to do this and I don't blame them.

That is an extremely long post for not responding to what I wrote at all.

The precedent is there. It is just wrong. Blakey didn't need an academy to learn what AFL was. He should have been allowed into the academy but Sydney shouldn't have has access to him at the draft. It would have helped him have an elite pathway without disenfranchising North. Sydney stealing Blakey was not what was sold to clubs and supporters when academies were introduced. It is a scam.

Was Blakey stolen from North though? If he didn't have the academy option would he definitely have nominated them as a F/S?

Obviously we can't know. But this is exploitation of the academy outside of its stated aims (which I support).

Current potential pick 1 wanting to stay home is ok. But any father son wanting to stay home (like Blakey did in Sydney) and using academy as a way to do it is wrong. Got it, pointless discussing with your one eyed opinion.

Anyone feeling a McKay to Sydney for 1st rounder + Dylan Stephens type deal

For Sydney they may value the salary cap flexibility over pick 11 etc in a way

Would just make more sense for Sydney to do a Daniher and sign him to 3 years initially before extending it. Given the rules, there's no reason for them to trade for McKay.

He doesn't want to stay home though. He made a clear statement saying he would play anywhere. Not sure why you would make a false statement like that.

The Northern clubs have serious issues with player retention. I support the academies as a means of doing that. GC will get three top 10 picks this year and still have a whole lot more draft capital they can trade into next year, and that is good. GC need players southern clubs won't steal.

Since the go home five though, your club has been a massive net beneficiary of player recruitment, including a brownlow medallist. Sydney and Brisbane are clearly in a different situation to GC and GWS, but the current rules do not take that into account.

All of this is beside the point though. You cannot sit there with a straight face and say you grow the game by exposing the sons of club champions to it. Utterly inane.

I’ve said it before but if this whole McKay to Essendon is about North and Essendon manipulating compo.

Most of the other suitors for McKay are not at the pointy end of the draft. North already have pick 16 via port but won’t want to trade picks or players they want to keep to trade up into the top 10

Essendon has enough cap space to ensure north get a band 1 compo pick back (even if McKay isn’t worth it) and that creates a free top 5 pick out of thin air that both clubs can split the benefits of. (Because if Dodorro is getting north a free top 5 pick he’s going to want to leverage that for something of value)

Since compo picks can’t be traded before they exist it means pick 2 needs to be on the table

Essendon get pick 2
North get pick 8 + TBD which appears to be a reasonable trade* and then the afl replaces what they traded out with a pick 3 priority pick.

There can also be open about who each club wants to take at that range out of Curtin/Dursma and find something that both are happy with.

I think what makes this work is the Essendon piece as their football department has Brad Scott (Former North Coach) and Craig Vosso (Former WCE high up) they have the relationships to help facilitate this situation between all 3 teams.

I think this trade is simple enough… if Sanders gets pre listed. If he doesn’t get anything it’s also pretty simple as they just take the best player available at pick 8

If Sanders is a player that needs to be matched it gets trickier.

* TBD is probably something like Jayden Laverde and a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Isnt free agency like a week before trade period?

WC can still pick Reid, it’s completely different. Blakey had the ability to choose to stay home. Reid doesn’t have that luxury.

Essendon won’t want to pay McKay enough to trigger band 1 if they don’t have a trade lined up.

If you’re just paying for McKay the player it’s costing you significantly less. Likely $1 Million less assuming a 5 year contract. (600k vs 800k)

So you don’t make that offer without assurances and agreements in place from all relevant parties. Ie North, Ben and AFL House that the extra money is getting you what you want
