Introducing the Ballarat Dragons
03/11/11

The team formerly known as Collingwood would like to confirm the rumours and announce that the club will be relocating and changing their team name. The change has come about at the same time that the team announced that fightingfury_88 would be the new manager of the team.

After considering relocation to various towns, suburbs and cities the commitee members finally decided that the team will now be based in Ballarat, with home games to be played at the North Ballarat Oval.

After consulting the members it was suggesed that the new team moniker would be 'Dragons'. This suggestion has been accepted and the team is now known as the 'Ballarat Dragons'.

It is believed that by moving to Ballarat the team can tap into the potentially huge market and form a mighty club with mighty supporters. It is also believed that moving away from the 'Collingwood' name would allow the club to distance itself from the much loathed real life AFL Team Collingwood Magpies.

New manager fightingfury_88 has arrived at a difficult time, with many of it's star players having being poached by rival clubs while former manager Joldo87 went missing. The club has lost some real quality with the likes of Tood Goldstein heading to the new expansion team but is looking to bounce back from this loss and build on the previous year's solid, but ultimately fruitless finals campaign.

One huge part of the team is the leadership group which as of today consists of the captain Brendon Goddard, vice-captain Heath Scotland and leadership group members Nathan Van Berlo and Andrew Embley. This leadership group can be added to throughout the season and it is hoped this core group of players will form an integral part of the next Dragons premiership team.

The club is always looking to win the premiership and will aim do so again this season. In the process it is hoped the community of Ballarat will embrace their new team turn out in force at the Dragons' home games.

If you count typing Ballarat at the top of a picture of a Dragon I found using Google Image search, then yes, I did make it. :D

I quite like it too.

Contract Renewals for Nathan Van Berlo and Ben Jacobs
05/11/11

The Ballarat Dragons are pleased to announce that Nathan Van Berlo and Ben Jacobs have signed contract renewals with the club. These renewals are the first official task completed by new manager fightingfury_88 who believes that both players are pivotal in the club's future success.

Nathan Van Berlo has been a part of the club since 2009 and is one of the members of the newly rebranded teams leadership group. Van Berlo is still only 25 years old but has proven himself as a classy midfielder able to post large scores in recent years, averaging 93.55 points per game in 2010. As such, Van Berlo has been rewarded with a 4 year contract at $559,000 per season. It is believed that Van Berlo has the potential to increase his output even further with the possibility of 100 points per game not out of the question.

Ben Jacobs was drafted to the club last season with the 24th overall National Draft pick. Jacobs has a solid if not spectacular debut season with the club, posting an average of 60.08 points. Jacobs has been rewarded with 2 year contract at $215,000 per year. It is hoped that this new contract will enable Jacobs to focus on his game and post larger scores over the coming seasons.

The club is delighted to have signed both of these players and are optimistic about the upcoming 2012 season.

Hudson signs and Retzlaff Promoted
07/11/11

The Ballarat Dragons have made a significant change to their list with veteran ruckman Ben Hudson signing for the club for 1 year at $150,000. It is hoped that Ben Hudson will go some way to helping fill the void left from Todd Goldstein's departure to Launceston. Hudson managed to post an impressive average score of 74.06 per game in 2011.

In other news, Retzlaff's solid season in 2011 has been rewarded with a senior list contract worth $86,000 for 1 year. It is believed the key forward has the potential to be a very good player, with the Dragons hoping he can learn to kick starighter around the goal.

Both players should prove valuable assets in rookie manager fightingfury_88's first season at the club.

Broadbent and Bewick join Dragons via Trade
09/11/11
The Ballarat Dragons have continued their off-season moves by agreeing to a trade with Melbourne. In the trade the Dragons recieve two promising young midfielders in Matthew Broadbent and Rohan Bewick in return for the maturing key defender Paul Duffield. The trade means that the Ballrat list is a lot more balanced now, with the club having a plethora of young and talented key defenders on the list.

Matthew Boradbent showed signs that he was on the rise in 2011 with the young midfielder playing a total of 19 games for an average of 63.70 points per game. It is hoped that over the coming years Matthew can improve his ouput and become a very solid scorer. Broadbent has plenty of talent to learn from at the Dragons with him able to slot in nicely into the Dragons midfield, learning his craft alongside prolific scorers Heath Scotland and Andrew Embley.

Bewick joins the club after his first season where he produced a promising debut season of 47.30 points over 12 games. Bewick did struggle with injuries however and it is hoped that with a full pre season and a clean bill of health, Rohan will be able to increase his points per game dramatically. At the very least, Bewick will provide the Dragons with solid depth and competition for the midfield spots.

Although the Dragons are sad to see a long term servant of the club leave the club, it is believed that by adding two promising players to the team will bode well for the future of the club. Both players have time on their side and are likely to get plenty of oppurtunities to prove their worth over the coming years.

Young Ruckman Gorringe Arrives at Ballarat
13/11/11

Ballarat have further enhanced their ruck stocks, this time adding 19 year old Daniel Gorringe via a trade with Richmond. Gorringe is incredibly young for a ruckman but still managed to play seven games in his debut AFL season. While his scores were relatively low, the coaching staff at the Dragons believe that Daniel has huge potential and will likely be a 10 year player for the club.

The trade that brought Gorringe to Ballarat meant that the Dragons had to say goodbye to young key defender Easton Wood and their first round draft pick, number 22. The Dragons however also received draft pick number 36 in return. The Dragons have a plethora of young key defenders on their list and it is thought that the while the loss of Easton is sad, the damage caused by his depature will be minimal. The Dragons wish Easton Wood the best of luck at his new club.

With Gorringe having arrived at Ballarat, the team's list is becoming clearer not only for next season, but seasons beyond. This trade means that the Dragons have a potential superstar ruckman for many years to come; as a result of this the club can now focus on other areas of concern. Gorringe joins an influx of younger players joining the Dragons this year, with the club keeping one eye on the future.

Crocker Dragons' Newest Recruit
21/11/11

The Ballarat Dragons have concluded their trade period by swapping Brent Macaffer for Melbourne's Sam Crocker. The trade is the third and final trade completed by the club this trade period and sees the club enter the National Draft with three active picks.

Crocker is a 19 year old forward showed plenty of promise but failed to play a game in his debut season. It is believed the Sam can play a much more prominent role in 2012 and provide valuable points for his new team. Sam has shown at VFL level that he has talent and it is believed he can harness this talent at Ballarat.

While Macaffer was a valued player at the club, the length and cost of his contract was the determining factor in trading him out for the younger and cheaper option in Crocker.

The Ballarat Dragons now look forward to the National Draft, fightingfury_88's first as manager, where the club's first pick is number four overall. The Dragons believe that no matter what happens, the club will pick up a very capable player with this pick who may be able to play senior football straight away.

Chad Wingard Dragon's First Pick
26/11/11

The Ballarat Dragons have selected promising midfielder Chad Wingard with their first selection in the 2011 National Draft, number four overall. Wingard is a fearless player who has the ability to win his own ball. To go with this, Wingard also has decent pace, shows strong leadership and can play in multiple positions. Truly, Chad is a complete midfielder.

It is believed that Chad will be able to play plenty of games in his debut season where he will be able to rack up plenty of points across the half forward line for his new team. The Dragons of course view Chad as a long term prospect and it is hoped that over the years Chad will develop into one of the premier midfielders in the competition.

The Dragons have two more selections remaining in the National Draft and are looking to add further quality to their young brigade.

Dragons Select Brown with Second Pick
06/12/11

The Ballarat Dragons have selected small midfielder Luke Brown with their second pick in the National Draft, pick number 46 overall. Luke Brown had a stellar season for Norwood and was considered a first round prospect by the Ballarat recruiting staff after missing out on being selected in the 2010 National Draft. As such, the Dragons are particularly rapt to select Luke this late in the draft.

The young midfielder is expected to play several games in his first AFL season where he is likely to line up in the midfield or on the forwardline. Luke definitely has an appetite for the ball and with time, the Dragons expect Luke to develop into a solid scorer for the team.

The Dragons have one more selection left in the National Draft and are excited to add futher young talent to the newest Dragons, Wingard and Brown.

Kersten's Selections Ends Dragons Draft on a High
07/12/11

The Ballarat Dragons have finished their 2011 National Draft by selecting promising tall forward Shane Kersten with their third and last pick, number 52 overall. Shane is not expected to play too many games in his debut season, however with a bit of luck he may be able to break into the side in a key forard position midway through the year.

Kersten is very quick over short distances which enables him to beat many of his opponents on a lead. Shane is also a more than adequate overhead mark and has a very long and accurate kick. These attributes combine to provide the Dragons with a very dangerous key forward who will be able to score points in bunches in future years.

The selection of Kersten rounds out a very successful National Draft for rookie coach fightingfury_88, with the club able to recruit three very promising players for the future in Wingard, Brown and Kersten. The club will now asses it's options heading into the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts, where the Dragons have already commited to signing Ben Hudson with their first pick in the Pre-Season Draft.

Shane Kersten

Height: 190cm
Weight: 88kg
DOB: 15/03/93
Recruited from: South Fremantle (WA)
Position: Forward/Key Forward

Kevin Sheehan says: Tall forward who is strong on the lead and sound overhead. Accurate kick for goal and has represented WA at U16 level in 2009 and U18 level in 2010 kicking 15 goals in 5 matches. Made his senior debut in the WAFL this year.

Dragons Delist Two
16/12/11

The Ballarat Dragons have opened up a further two spots on their senior list after confirming the delistings of Leon Davis and Ben Jakobi. Davis has decided to leave the AFL and retire immediately to be closer with his family. Jakobi has been delisted after just one season on an AFL list.

The Dragons will now have a total of three picks in the pre-season, with Ben Hudson already being commited to the club with a first round pick. The club wish Ben and Leon the best of luck for the future and will be looking to add further young talent to the club via the upcoming pre-season and rookie drafts.

Darley Joins Dragons Through Pre-Season Draft
27/12/11

The Ballarat Dragons have added further young talent to their list with the acqusition of midfielder Sam Darley. The Dragons used their second pick in the Pre-Season Draft, pick #31 overall after already commiting to and selecting Ben Hudson with there first pick.

Darley will add to the midfield depth at Ballarat and the club will be looking to develop his skills over the coming years. Coach fightingfury_88 is particularly excited about the signing.
"We see a lot of talent in Darley and feel he has the potential to really rack up some big scores for this team."

The Dragons still have one more pick remaining in this year's Pre-Season Draft and will be looking to add further talent to it's senior list. Following the pre-season draft, Ballarat have five active selections in the Rookie Draft to round out the final list for 2012.

Sam Darley
Height: 186cm
Weight: 80kg
DOB: 15/02/1993

Lever's Selection Rounds Out Dragons Senior List
29/12/11

The Ballarat Dragons have finalised their senior list for 2012 by selecting developing tall Jay Lever with their third and final selection in the pre-season draft.

Selcted with the 43rd pick overall, Jay Lever is a key position player who has the ability to play in both the back and forward lines where he can use his size and agility to beat his opponents. Lever is incredibly light for such a tall player and as such it is expected the Lever will not see much, if any, senior action in 2012.

"There is no doubt that Lever is a project player for us" coach fightingfury_88 said.
"We are not expecting to see miracles from this kid straight away but we are hoping that once his body matures and he puts a little bit of weight on his bones he will develop into a very nice key position player for us. Wether that is as a backman or as a forward is yet to be determined yet."

Lever has shown great agility, especially for a man of his size. This agility has even seen him play across the wings. There is little doubt that this versatility attracted the Dragons recruiters.

The Dragons now turn their attention to the Rookie Draft where the club has a whopping five active selections to add to the already rookied Tom Simpkin.

Jay Lever
Age: 18
Height: 200cm
Weight: 86kg
From: Geelong Falcons
Position: Key defender

Quick and agile and loves to take on the opposition, but his stocks slipped in a disappointing national championships. Could be a wildcard.

Represented Vic Country at the NAB AFL U18 Championships, playing in all five games and averaging 10 hit-outs.

Jesse O'Brien Latest Dragon Rookie
09/01/12

Young forward Jesse O'Brien has been selected with the Dragons 2nd pick, pick number 19 overall in the Rookie Draft. O'Brien is a brilliant kick of the ball and despite being a rookie he is likely to get plenty of game time in 2012 where it is hoped he can use his good disposal to damaging affect.

O'Brien's 2011 was cut short mid-season after succumbing to a stress fracture in his fibula, sidelining him for the final two months of the season. It is believed that O'Brien will recover from his injury with plenty of time to spare, meaning he could be a surprise selection come round 1.

The Dragons have two more selction remaining in the Rookie Draft where the club will round out it's final playing list for 2012 by selecting the final two Dragon Rookie Hatchlings.
