AFL Lions Academy = Wide Bay, Darling Downs, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane North, and the northern parts of Brisbane West and Brisbane South East regions

The four partnering AFL Clubs in NSW and Queensland will be provided the opportunity to pre-list players that are developed through the Academies, under the bidding system that currently applies to all Father-Son selections in the National Draft. This will ensure that any player developed from NSW or Queensland was selected at his ‘market value’.

With the Swans academy signing it's first player today, it's time for a thread to keep tabs on how our academy is going.

Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast academy coaches will be on the lookout for the next Australian Football League (AFL) superstars in Bundaberg from tomorrow.

“Most of the boys playing have already been earmarked for bigger things and will be pushing to make that next level.”

Plan for northern AFL academy
BRAD THOMPSON

AFL is set to make its strongest surge yet into North Queensland by combining with the incoming Gold Coast franchise to establish a youth satellite academy in Townsville. Under the new project, Townsville youngsters will be automatically zoned to the Gold Coast club under a system which will split all Queensland academy products between the Gold Coast and the Brisbane Lions.

Re: Brisbane Lions Academy Watch

Interesting, I didn't realise Qld had been split between the two for the academy. For some reason I'd assumed it was first in, best dressed. http://www-static.sportingpulse.com/pics/00/00/71/67/716719_1_M.jpg gives a pretty good illustration of the split between the Lions (yellow) and the Suns (green).

Re: Brisbane Lions Academy Watch

Short straw again for the Lions?

Going by the image in dlanod's post it looks like we fair pretty well.

Re: Brisbane Lions Academy Watch

Yeah we just have to take what we get. Gold Coast appears to have got the better deal, especially as they have exclusive accesss to the Gold Coast which is the hotbed of Queensland footy, but you can't really complain about the Gold Coast having access to the Gold Coast. :p

Re: Brisbane Lions Academy Watch

Short straw again for the Lions?

Less travel costs because our's is all relatively local. We miss out on the stronger areas of the Gold Coast, but that makes sense given who the other Qld team is. We get most of Brisbane as well as the Sunshine Coast. The only real AFL area north of the Sunshine Coast is Cairns, and they don't have much of a history of great youngsters even though they have a pretty strong local comp. Overall it's surprisingly fair.

Re: Brisbane Lions Academy Watch

AIS guys for next year. These guys would be in our catchment area I presume. Anyone know if they have signed up?

Queensland: Brian Coleman-Broome (Morningside FC), Alex Sexton (Springwood FC), Sam Michael (Redland)

Re: Brisbane Lions Academy Watch

Yeah, if we pretend that the Lions Academy had ecisted for the past 20 years, here are some examples of players who could have been eligible, and therefore available to us a priority selections.

Jason Akermanis (Mayne)
David Armitage (Morningside, although was originally from Mackay which is GC17 zone)
Rohan Bail (Mt Gravatt)
Robert Copeland (Northern Eagles)
Jamie Charman (Northern Eagles)
Josh Drummond (Maroochydore)
Courtney Dempsey (Morningside, though technically from Carins which is GC17 zone)
Mitch Hahn (Northern Eagles)
Shaun Hampson (Mt Gravatt)
Scott Harding (Morningside)
Rhan Hooper (Ipswich)
Ben Hudson (Mt Gravatt)
Joel MacDonald (Mt Gravatt)
Brad Miller (Mt Gravatt)
Daniel Pratt (Northern Eagles)
Albert Proud (Mt Gravatt)
Sam Reid (Zillmere/Caloundra)
Cheynee Stiller (Zillmere)
Josh Thomas (Redlands)
Gavin Urquhart (Morningside, technically from Rocky which is GC17)
Michael Voss (Morningside)
Ben Warren (Aspley/Northern Eagles)
Brendan Whitecross (Kedron/Zillmere)
Tom Williams (Morningside)
Sean Yoshiura (Mt Gravatt)

Mixed bag there, and obviously a lot of them ended up at the Lions anyway, but priority access to players like...

Armitage
Bail
Dempsey
Hahn
Hampson
Reid
Thomas
Urquhart
Warren
Whitecross
Williams

Certainly wouldn't have been anything to scoff at. Exciting times.

Sam Michael is technically from Cairns, so he could be 50/50. The other two are definitely in our area.

No idea if they have signed up. Anyone brave enough to contact the Lions Academy and see if you can get a list of names? :D

Re: Brisbane Lions Academy Watch

Interestingly Charman could have signed for the GC under this scenario, I remember he played a year or two in the Cairns leagues before coming down to the Northern Eagles a year or so before the draft.

Re: Brisbane Lions Academy Watch

Does anyone know if Brian Coleman-Broome is the nephew of the extremely talented (unfortunately it has been wasted in lower levels) Willie Broome?

Future Stars Carnival Night

Players are invited to a regional trial day, followed by a four-week training program. At the end of the program, a Carnival Night is held where the boys face off in a 9-a-side competition.
From here, players are selected for the Academy based on their skill, athleticism, performance in the training program and their performance at the Carnival Night.

At this year’s Carnival Night, there will be eight teams who will play in a round-robin format on a field approximately 90 metres long. Teams will play three games back to back from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

That is a hell of a list of players.

And it doesn't even include the "oldies"!

After a busy year of watching club, school, regional, state and national games of football the initial Lions Academy squad for has been finalized for boys aged 12-14 this year (turning 13 – 15 in 2011). Boys aged 15 this year (turning 16 in 2011) are still being reviewed and will be finalised by the end of the month.

A number of factors were taken into consideration when selecting the squad including fitness level, skill level, and game knowledge. Feedback was also sought from various coaches and AFLQ development managers on player’s attitude at training and in games, commitment and general behavior.

All players selected will be required to attend an orientation session with their parents / guardians later this month at the GABBA with details to be confirmed shortly. Training sessions will commence early December in before breaking over Christmas – New Year period.

It should be noted that Players can enter, exit and re-enter the Lions Academy at any stage depending on a player’s attitude, commitment, improvment and development.

Selection should not be taken for granted but seen as a great opportunity to further develop your football and personal development. All players in the Academy program are reviewed annually before deciding on which players will continue on the following year.

For those boys who have missed out on selection we encourage you to seek feedback from your club, regional coaches and AFLQ development managers so that you can continue to work hard on all areas of your game and continue to put yourself up for selection at club, regional and state level football.

It should be also noted that players are not selected on what club they play at, but rather their performances in games, attitude on and off the field and their willingness to learn. In line with the AFL Queensland policy of junior player’s changing clubs, the Lions Academy does not encourage player's changing clubs in the belief that it will help their selection in representative teams. We do encourage players staying at their existing club and possibly playing up one age group in order to be challenged and further improve their football.

Mods: I've quoted the whole thing as it is a Lions press release and there's a typo in the linked doc's file extension (".doc -") that will mean it likely goes unread by most. Feel free to trim if you see fit.

Seems there are a few familiar surnames in that list - Dickfos, Kennedy, White - wonder if they are related to our former players

Darryl's sons are Darryl Jnr, Willie and Kobe - so I doubt the White's are related to him.
(Word is though that his boys can play)

The Dickfos is possibly one of Danny's Nephews - don't know that for a fact, just guessing (Robbie and Michael Dickfos were great QAFL players at Windsor-Zillmere and both did well in the WAFL as well)
