Jake Rogers snags himself a rising star nom.

Vic folk get annoyed at SUNS' advantageous means.

Umm.............how can I break the news to my fellow Victorian (and non ac affiliated club supporters) that there once was a NSW/AC scholarship in place?

This is how Tex became a Crow.

Our captain Jarrod Witts also happened to be a NSW scholarship holder who signed with Collingwood at 15 years of age in 2008 (link) and obviously went on to become an AFL player for the Pies. The rules at the time stated all AFL clubs back then were able to sign up to two NSW based prospects per year and this same rule delivered a 16 year old Taylor Walker to the Crows in 2006. Tex nabbed a Rising Star nomination with a five goal performance against defending premiers Hawthorn in R10, 2009.

Don't think there was ever really any push to abolish the NSW scholarship program even though it clearly advantaged some clubs more than others. It only came to an end when the northern academies were established and now people get annoyed when the Swans or Giants do exactly what other clubs were doing before the northern academy era began in 2013.

The more whinging from other clubs the more you are making your advantages work for you.

We have had an academy for years. Only getting the whinging when it starts to work.

No one really talking about the Lions academy, only about the quality of the father sons they are getting atm. But they will be fine b/c the Pies, the Dogs and the Cats love father sons and the Blues are about to get a couple as well.

Short sighted selfish reactive drivel.

PS. How much fun is it to listen to the whinging while watching the academy kids run around? Heres hoping it lasts.

MELBOURNE will welcome talented father-son prospect Kalani White into its program this week, as the club vies with Gold Coast for access to the gun youngster.

White, a strong-marking 200cm defender, isn't draft eligible until 2025 but will be able to join either the Demons under father-son rules or the Suns as part of their Northern Academy program.

The athletic key-position prospect is able to join Melbourne due to his dad, Jeff, playing 236 games for the Demons between 1998-2008. But he is also able to join Gold Coast, having relocated to Queensland when his father's playing career ended.

The teenager, who turns 17 later this week, is in Victoria ahead of the Gold Coast Academy's Coates Talent League clash with the Dandenong Stingrays on Sunday and will spend time at Melbourne in the lead-up to that match.

White will not be able to train at the Demons, due to being a bottom-age prospect, but will observe a series of sessions and player meetings as part of his time at the club.

The youngster caught the attention of AFL recruiters at last year's under-16 carnival, where he was named as the All-Australian centre-half back. He also played forward throughout that campaign, kicking two goals against Sydney's Academy.

Speaking to AFL.com.au in March, Jeff said his son was enjoying the opportunity: "He's really looking forward to it and having interest from Melbourne and the Suns, he likes being a part of it and talking to the recruiting officers and finding out what he needs to improve on. It's a unique position to be in but in saying that he's very dedicated to getting better." – Riley Beveridge

Leo Lombard played a starring role for the GCS Academy as they went down to the fast finishing Stingrays. He was at his best early as the Suns built an early lead with Leo finding a stack of the footy on the spread, and then later on he did his best to stem the turning tide, winning the footy at stoppage and using his breakaway pace to slice through congestion.

The boys are hosting the Geelong Falcons at the Carrara Sports & Leisure Centre tomorrow afternoon. Very interested to see how Leo Lombard and Dylan Patterson go after both being named in the bests last week. Zai Millane was also named in the bests last week and is draft eligible this year so he'll naturally have some eyes on him with his famous surname.

Falcons will be a tougher proposition than the boys last two CTL games.

Interesting to see how the boys go against genuine contenders and also how well the Geelong lads handle the travel.

Got a few players to cheer on in the national championships this year.

Great result for the Academy.

Jeez, Addinsal and Murray stiff. Both playing very good footy. They are bottom agers, so expect them both to make Allies next year if their form holds.

I remember that article a few months ago whinging that we had another big year of academy talent this year listed Gulbin as the kid other than Lombard coming through that made it unfair?

I can’t say I’d heard of him until then, but hasn’t been named. Injured perhaps? Or just didn’t make the cut afterall?

Does anyone know if we have academy access to small forward Waylon Davey-Motlop this year? I noticed he was included in the Allies squad for the U18 national championships and is draft eligible this year. He's from Palmerston in Darwin (Sandy Brock's junior club) and has been boarding at Xavier College in Melbourne for the last few years but that shouldn't affect his eligibility. He's also not F/S tied to any other AFL club as his parents are siblings of AFL greats. His first cousins include current AFL players Alwyn/Jayden Davey and Jesse Motlop.

It's conceivable that we could have a Rioli, a Long and a Davey-Motlop on our list at the end of this year if Waylon is academy eligible for us. Literally the four biggest footy families in the NT.

Don't think he's connected to the suns academy, even from the darwin zone that I know of. or at least havent heard.
But ive seen him play a few times. Solid boy.

top 25 for 2025

BEAU ADDINSALL

Club: Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Broadbeach FC
Height: 180cm
DOB: 09/03/07
An uncanny midfielder-forward with prolific ball-winning ability and innate goal sense, Addinsall was outstanding across the under 16s Championships last year. He averaged 28 disposals (13 contested) and 7.7 tackles, while also kicking five goals against Tasmania. He was rewarded for his three impressive performances by not only winning the Suns’ MVP but also the Alan McLean Medal as the best and fairest player in Pool B and being named an All-Australian. Addinsall started 2024 impressively as a bottom-age player with the Suns Academy at under-18 level, averaging 21 disposals and kicking six goals across his first seven matches.

JAI MURRAY

Club: Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Broadbeach FC
Height: 183cm
DOB: 03/09/07
A medium midfielder or forward who wins the ball one-on-one and is a fierce competitor, Murray is a tidy ball user and decision maker. At the under-16 national championships last year he averaged 22 disposals (nine contested) and a tournament-high eight tackles to be selected as an All-Australian. He has played six matches for the Suns Academy this year, averaging 20 disposals playing predominantly on the wing and working hard up and down the ground. Murray provides good connection for his team in an outside role and was among his side’s best in their impressive win over the Chargers in late April

DYLAN PATTERSON

Club: Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Palm Beach-Currumbin FC
Height: 183cm
DOB: 01/09/07
A super quick wingman or half-forward, Patterson excites with his energy and zest in creating opportunities for his team and has great speed which is a real weapon. He averaged 13 disposals (six contested) and four tackles to provide a real spark for the Suns during last year’s under-16 championships and was selected as an All-Australian. He has continued to develop physically since the championships last July and has shown the ability to use his power away from stoppages and win one-on-one contests during six matches for the Suns Academy this year. Patterson has averaged 13 disposals, five tackles and three clearances this season

ZEKE UWLAND

Club: Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Burleigh FC
Height: 176cm
DOB: 24/04/07
A skillful wingman or halfback, Uwland reads the play superbly and uses his left-foot to great effect, including being capable of hitting the scoreboard. A prolific ball-winner in last year’s under-16 championships, he showed the ability to find space and provide connection from defence to attack, averaging 9.7 marks and 25 disposals (17 uncontested) to be a real asset to his team and earn All-Australian honours. Already turning heads with his early-season form this year, Uwland is averaging 28 disposals from five matches for the Suns Academy, including a best-on-ground performance against the Oakleigh Chargers in late April where he logged 25 disposals and kicked six goals. His brother Bodhi is already on the Suns’ AFL list

KALANI WHITE

Club: Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Broadbeach FC
Height: 198cm
DOB: 05/05/07
A tall defender, White also showed that he can go forward in the under-16 championships last year and excited with his athleticism and outstanding overhead marking. He has a supernatural leap and the size to win the contest or bring the ball to ground to the benefit of his team. During the under-16 championships last year he was rarely beaten one-on-one and averaged 7.3 disposals and 2.3 marks playing predominately deep in defence to win All-Australian honours. He has taken another step at under-18 level with the Suns, looking composed with his ball use and decision making down back and averaging 10 disposals and five marks from his first six matches. He is the son of former No.1 draft pick and Melbourne ruckman Jeff White, making him eligible both as a father-son for the Demons and as an Academy player for the Suns in 2025

Yeah, Kevin Sheehan top 25 prospects 2025 in Herald.

9 from academies.

Suns - White, Uwland, Patterson, Murray, Addinsall
Lions - Bridge, Annable
Swans - Chamberlain, Carmichael

Looking forward to whinging from Victoria forgetting that Suns will be able to match only 1 or 2 depending on ladder position.

I wonder who gets prioritised if we can only match two? 2 mid's, a winger/hf and a half back (assuming White chooses Melbourne).
