Jake Rogers snags himself a rising star nom.

Vic folk get annoyed at SUNS' advantageous means.

Umm.............how can I break the news to my fellow Victorian (and non ac affiliated club supporters) that there once was a NSW/AC scholarship in place?

This is how Tex became a Crow.

Our captain Jarrod Witts also happened to be a NSW scholarship holder who signed with Collingwood at 15 years of age in 2008 (link) and obviously went on to become an AFL player for the Pies. The rules at the time stated all AFL clubs back then were able to sign up to two NSW based prospects per year and this same rule delivered a 16 year old Taylor Walker to the Crows in 2006. Tex nabbed a Rising Star nomination with a five goal performance against defending premiers Hawthorn in R10, 2009.

Don't think there was ever really any push to abolish the NSW scholarship program even though it clearly advantaged some clubs more than others. It only came to an end when the northern academies were established and now people get annoyed when the Swans or Giants do exactly what other clubs were doing before the northern academy era began in 2013.

The more whinging from other clubs the more you are making your advantages work for you.

We have had an academy for years. Only getting the whinging when it starts to work.

No one really talking about the Lions academy, only about the quality of the father sons they are getting atm. But they will be fine b/c the Pies, the Dogs and the Cats love father sons and the Blues are about to get a couple as well.

Short sighted selfish reactive drivel.

PS. How much fun is it to listen to the whinging while watching the academy kids run around? Heres hoping it lasts.

MELBOURNE will welcome talented father-son prospect Kalani White into its program this week, as the club vies with Gold Coast for access to the gun youngster.

White, a strong-marking 200cm defender, isn't draft eligible until 2025 but will be able to join either the Demons under father-son rules or the Suns as part of their Northern Academy program.

The athletic key-position prospect is able to join Melbourne due to his dad, Jeff, playing 236 games for the Demons between 1998-2008. But he is also able to join Gold Coast, having relocated to Queensland when his father's playing career ended.

The teenager, who turns 17 later this week, is in Victoria ahead of the Gold Coast Academy's Coates Talent League clash with the Dandenong Stingrays on Sunday and will spend time at Melbourne in the lead-up to that match.

White will not be able to train at the Demons, due to being a bottom-age prospect, but will observe a series of sessions and player meetings as part of his time at the club.

The youngster caught the attention of AFL recruiters at last year's under-16 carnival, where he was named as the All-Australian centre-half back. He also played forward throughout that campaign, kicking two goals against Sydney's Academy.

Speaking to AFL.com.au in March, Jeff said his son was enjoying the opportunity: "He's really looking forward to it and having interest from Melbourne and the Suns, he likes being a part of it and talking to the recruiting officers and finding out what he needs to improve on. It's a unique position to be in but in saying that he's very dedicated to getting better." – Riley Beveridge

Leo Lombard played a starring role for the GCS Academy as they went down to the fast finishing Stingrays. He was at his best early as the Suns built an early lead with Leo finding a stack of the footy on the spread, and then later on he did his best to stem the turning tide, winning the footy at stoppage and using his breakaway pace to slice through congestion.

The boys are hosting the Geelong Falcons at the Carrara Sports & Leisure Centre tomorrow afternoon. Very interested to see how Leo Lombard and Dylan Patterson go after both being named in the bests last week. Zai Millane was also named in the bests last week and is draft eligible this year so he'll naturally have some eyes on him with his famous surname.

Falcons will be a tougher proposition than the boys last two CTL games.

Interesting to see how the boys go against genuine contenders and also how well the Geelong lads handle the travel.
