Rookie 43. Emerson Jeka (2023 - )

I got the same impression. It was a weird interview from him.
He would have had more chance of senior games at Essendon, so you can understand he would be a bit miffed. Hopefully the chip on his shoulder will make him work harder here and get his chance.

Unless the Dons told him that they were 100% gonna take him in the Rookie Draft and we got in just before them, he really shouldn't be disappointed.

He was potentially only a few selections away from being out of the system.

Time to step it up I reckon.

He was only signing a vfl contract with them. No guarantee they'd ssp him, otherwise they'd have just brought him in DFA

He has had the ball on a string at VFL level this season. Putting an outlier in R2 aside he's averaging 22 possessions across 4 games (it's otherwise 20 across all 5). Granted that there can be a lot of junk disposal when playing in defence but it's consistent accumulation of the ball.

He's always struck me as having a pretty complete set of physical tools: good size and speed, really good leap and aggression in the air. He's a nice kick of the ball, too.

What's the issue at this point in time? I noticed that O'Sullivan got a debut when that could otherwise have been Jeka.

I thought he was terrible in the first few games when the backline was under pressure and he had to defend. Last few games he has been good when the defenders have got it easier.

We didn't need to play another key defender when O'Sullivan debuted. It was just a learning experience for the young kid against inferior opposition against North. Give him a taste and reward for the pre season. At the end of the day you are going to prefer to pump AFL footy into an elite kid via the draft instead of your break glass in emergency list filler.

Can't defend.
