WHILE hundreds of young footballers sat glued to their TV screens last week, waiting to learn their fate in the AFL draft, Brad Helbig was at a pizza shop with his girlfriend.

"I was getting into the old creamy chicken and cherry tomatoes. She goes all right.

In his own words:

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
Joel Selwood. I can win my own ball but also run and take on the game.

I feel my strengths are my execution (kicking, handballing), ball-winning ability and my workrate eachway - forward and defensively.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
I would like to improve my fitness and also my reading of the play.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
Adelaide Crows. My whole family does so I was brought up also following them .

ROUND 22 POWERADE STAR SEARCH AWARD

brad.jpg
Congratulations to Brad Helbig of West Adelaide Football Club, Round 22 Powerade Star Search Award.

The 18 year old from Waikerie made his League debut against South Adelaide.

He picked up 11 kicks, four marks and two handballs and took the footy inside 50 six times with precision, setting up regular scoring opportunities.

Judges said his speed, decision making and use of the football were highlights.

Whaley: ``Brad has an outstanding workrate and has shown a lot of improvement late in the season in being able to win the footy and use it with precision. Goes hard for four quarters and would be a nice development prospect.''

What the RFC recruiters say:
Brad hails from the strong football nursery of the Riverland in South Australia, the recruiting zone for the West Adelaide Bloods. In 2009, Brad moved from Waikerie to Adelaide to further his football and schooling, taking up a position at the Henley High School. Henley is renowned for its AFL curriculum and also hosted fellow 2010 draftees Scott Lycett and Jared Polec.
Brad played the majority of 2010 season with the West Adelaide U18 side that ultimately went down to Glenelg in the Grand Final. Brad was named 2nd best player for his side in the final after bravely playing through the final series with a fractured rib suffered in a few weeks earlier. He played 14 U18 games in 2010 through the midfield kicking 18 goals as he pushed forward. He was named in his sides best players 9 times and was rewarded with 4 reserves games later in the year and his league debut in round 22.

Brad displayed tremendous ball winning ability and had a high clearance rate when playing in the midfield but also shone with his strong overhead marking when pushing forward. Brad is already developing a strong body that will cope with the rigours of AFL while has also been identified as having the kicking skill and penetration coach Hardwick demands.

The club will give Brad the time he needs to develop his body and game under the guidance of our midfield coaches. His ability to mark strongly and kick the ball with depth will also allow him to play off half back or half forward.

Coaches view.

From Astbury to White, Richmond assistant coaches Danny Daly and Brendon Lade share their views on every player at the club...

Bradley Helbig
Brad has only been here a couple of weeks, but he's a tough inside midfielder who kicks the ball really well. He's getting his head around the way we play. A smaller version of Dusty (Dustin Martin).

Hey I've been overseas the past 14 days and noticed a lot of people are tipping this guy for a round 1 debut after his form in his last 2 nab games.

What role has he been playing and what's he done particularly well to have people saying this?

If someone could give me a run down that's be cool.

his attack on the ball as been first rate, his tackling as been awesome and his disposil's been sound , hasnt had heaps of possy but useing it well

plus hardwick said in a interview with a adelaide radio station that cousins was going to be at round one to present somethink. maybe handing down his number 32 at a guess :)

hmmm, you might be damn right you know:thumbsu:

After finally watching all the practice matches Ive came to the conclusion that Brad has good skills and great hands in close or under pressure, he laid a fair few tackles which he showed good technique in doing so and works hard. Thought the guys seemed to ignore him in the Port Adelaide game but looked for him more in the other 2 games and didnt even no he was playing in the first round of the nab cup (thanks channel 10). Should of kicked a couple of goals in the adelaide game but no biggy. Should play round 1 where he will probably line up on the half foward flank with stints in the middle.

BUT SO FAR SO GOOD!

Helbig is an 18-year-old, 185cm, 85kg, industrious, inside midfielder, with the capacity to push forward and be productive. He worked his way impressively through the ranks at West Adelaide in 2010, starting the season in the under-18s, before earning promotion to the reserves, and then making his senior debut in round 22.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick will use Friday night’s NAB Challenge match against Port Adelaide in Alice Springs as another chance to give the club’s developing players more valuable game time.

Those fresh faces include 2010 draftees Reece Conca, Jake Batchelor, Brad Helbig, Dean MacDonald and Tom Derickx.

He needs to go to sprinting camp over next pre-season, with that extra bit of toe will be very good. His kicking on that right peg is very nice

This "kicking and character" policy is the best thing we ever did. Absolutely love it how our team is littered with elite kicks of the footy these days :thumbsu:

Ultra damaging when he has the ball, just needs to get it more often. Needs to work on his athleticism to help him find space to receive the ball, as it is he's just not involved enough. The good news is that his hurt factor is high enough that he doesn't need to rack up that many posessions to be a genuine player.

the positive thing for me is that he has quality, he is tough and he works hard.

when it all comes together he is going to be a good player for us, particularly when we are up and about.

love his long goals from 50.
