Play Nice 2024 Non AFL Crowds/Ratings and other Industry thread

Well said.

The combination of double headers and self parodical attendance inflation of the A Leagues should in no way influence what the AFL does with the AFLW

Just a quick sampling, the crowd you can see here (the grandstand on the camera side seats 560 people keep in mind) was quoted at 6,836 of a capacity of 8,000.

The A Leagues women have no FTA TV presence beyond presumably (some?) finals. What is fit for it is irrelevant as to what is fit for the AFLW - they are in different spheres of relevance and import

The ALW still get pretty poor crowds to their finals along with most of their H&A matches (some are only in the hundreds) so the Matilda's effect is minimal.

The Newcastle Jets also got 6K for its semi final as well, which was more than the mens side got in its H+A fixture on the same weekend

There has been a boost.

The NRL the worlds biggest and best Football comp in the world according to sleazy bogan Sydney media tart V'Landys is averaging 20k per match this season whoo whee!

It's not just PVL a lot of people believe RL is the most watched sport in Australia.

The new 2 expansion clubs are down the bottom.

Really is the textbook version of how not to do an expansion. Compare that to the NBL, who can't stop saying that the JJ are the most successful expansion club ever in Australian Sports history.

They exist literally because Fox Sports had a clause in the old broadcast agreement that they would pay more money if there was a third team in Melbourne and Sydney. That's it. That's the reason. It's not as if the A-League other than that thought that they were the best possible expansion temas.

Average A League crowds of only 8102 in 2024 is a disgrace for the supposed greatest most supported football code in the universe = but not in Australia where soccer is struggling badly (Apart from the Matilda's) and is back to the bad old days of the National Soccer League.
The game in Australia has gone backwards over the last ten years at a rapid rate and I don't see it improving any time soon.

The NRL had only 8000 at Accor Stadium (10% of the capacity of 82,000) for two Sydney teams last night surely that would have to be a massive loss all around esp as there would have been a lot of South Sydney members in attendance in that crowd?
Laughable when you consider that Penrith have won multiple premierships lately and South Sydney are possibly the biggest club in Sydney.

Imagine Collingwood playing Geelong and getting 8,000

A fairer comparison in terms of a Thursday game that doesn't have huge interest when other things are going on in the city is the Dogs vs. Saints game, which bottomed out at 27k, which is more or less the floor for a Melbourne vs. Melbourne crowd.

North have gotten more in their worst timeslots against non-factor opposition, like vs. GWS.

forecast was for torrential rain, and it was wet all day.

There have been only 8 instances since 2000 where an all Melbourne clash at the MCG or Docklands has drawn less than 20k.

They are all combinations of North, St Kilda, Bulldogs and Melbourne. The lowest is 13k in the covid hangover of early 2022 with the next worst 16k.

I was in Parramatta yesterday - the “torrential rain” is really only forecast for the weekend. Yesterday the weather was, for the most part, nice and warmish, there were just a couple of very brief light showers and a bit of barely there drizzle earlier. There was no rain at all in the lead up to the game - in Melbourne, it would’ve been described as a “balmy night, perfect for football”

But NRL is the most watched sport in Australia.

The ALW GF of only 7,671 at AAMI Park is just pathetic and proves once again the the Matilda's success has not had a positive bearing on local ALW crowds that overall remain very low.

The only Women's Football comp in Australia to get half decent crowds is still the AFLW.
