2022 - the season that could have been...

It all went down the toilet when...

(1) We opted for that stupid process of naming Co-Captains. You cannot have the dreams, aspirations, beliefs, excitement, anticipation, support and leadership spread across multiple Captains. It fails. It is a failure. Groups of people need to be lead by a figurehead, one person, with secondary people there in case the Captain cannot lead. We don't have 2 Prime Ministers at once. The USA doesn't have 2 Presidents at once. There aren't 2 Elon Musks, or 2 Bill Gates at once. So, if it's good enough for Co-Captains at the Club, why doesn't Richmond have two Co-Coaches at once, say, Dimma and Clarkson? Because it doesn't work. Leadership in AFL needs to be focussed, brought to a head, a figurehead needs to lead. Not 2 people doing it.

The thickheads at the Club that came up with that concept need to re-assess there thinking. Currently Richmond has Co-Captains...in essence, no leadership at all. We basically nominated nothingness and no focussed direction to lead the club out on the ground.

This year, Richmond created their own 'Jack Trengove/Jack Grimes' impotent, nothing leadership. During our Premierships we played under the banner of the 'Richmond Man' from the individual at No 22 in the Senior Side, to the Captain. Each player was individually respected as a 'Richmond Man'. This Season's Co-Captaincy farce gave us the 'Richmond Couple'...a complete breakdown of the egalitarian RFC concept of great individuals coming together in ONE Team. We know longer have one military style General leading the playing group, we now have a Mum & Dad mixed direction overseeing the game day team. Our Leadership is a beige, blah, nothingness, mess.

(2) We let the 'soft tissue' debacle spread like a disease and takeover the Club. Who's answerable to that? Players that hang around too long AND the Sports Medicine and Fitness part of the Club who cannot keep them right. And Dimma who still thinks he can band-aid together a group of injury-prone veterans, limp through the year and be healthy for a Finals tilt. Why? Because it's worked before. But now these veterans are right on the back doorstep of their careers and putting them in cotton wool isn't working. We need a complete cleanout of all our Medical Science and Fitness people. They got our veterans all wrong, or trained them wrong.

(3) The Dustin Martin time away because of his father's death. Everyone needs to grieve. But people return to their everyday workplace 10x quicker than Dusty did. Greater tough love was needed then and Martin should have returned quicker.

(4) The never-ending 'Kane Lambert' injury farce. Either send him to surgery now, or ask him to retire immediately. We cannot have a Player who is injured one week, come back and good to play as a Medical Sub the next week, only to play a half, and be out the next week! WT? Can't the Club see that this is ridiculous to anybody outside the club? We can't be a Nursing Home in a Home & Away Season to the perpetually injured. What? Is Lambert going to sit out the rest of the season and then play a blinder in the Grand Final if we make it? No! I'm insulted the way the Club has built up our expectations on the return of Kane Lambert every week. Ask him to play this week and the rest of the year, and if he says he can't, ask him to announce his retirement asap. He was a great player years ago, but now he's a waste of mental space for the playing group and supporters. The Club needs to be honest to itself and its supporters asap.

(5) The sick Richmond joke that rubbish players will become good one day. Aarts, Ross & Collier-Dawkins should all be told immediately to look elsewhere next year. None of them are reliable in flowing pieces of play where they have to think, create and produce. All look alright when handed the ball. None have any awareness in traffic. None have any football brains. Downhill skier Ross can get the pill when the team is doing well but then he's just doing what is easy anyway. Ross is weak in the middle, falls over a lot that leads to opposition clearances which hurts us. Aarts, Ross & Collier-Dawkins are good 2's Players, yet they bring nothing of any longer term week-to-week value to the Senior Sides. Trade or delist that lot before Season 2023.

(6) It's evident now that Dimma really is soft on onfield discipline. Even last night, Shorty's stupid infringement of slapping the ball away from an opposition player on the mark that lead to a 50m free, that helped the Gold Coast victory should have been an instant dragging off the field. We are at such a low level of discipline at the Club that Shorty now needs to be made an example of. Short needs to be dropped to the 2s so the entire Club next week will see on the Team Sheet.... OUT: Short (discipline)....a new lesson for all the Club. Act professionally as a professional footballer at the elite level or get dropped. Simple.
The lazy free kicks against are still costing us, as they have every year since Dimmas tenure. 3 Flags yes, but we were so far in front and luckily one dumb, lazy infringement couldn't hurt us. They hurt us now we are a weaker team. Next time it could be in a Final. Dimma needs to lay down the Law now. The time of hugging the players and supporting them at all costs needs to be over.

(7) The times we have gone to sleep in the last quarter or half can only be two things.
(A) The players are switching off, or (B) Our Fitness is not up to scratch.
If we have mental issues of switching off late in games, it's Dimma's fault.
If we cannot run out games, it's Dimma's fault.
The buck stops with Dimma. He's either identified these issue, or not.
He needs to fix this issue, asap.

2022 has been a shitestorm of many flawed ingredients. They need addressing immediately and in the end of year Review.
I agree with most of what you said. Especially jayden short. I love the guy. But his action was the definition of needless stupidity that literally cost us the match. I hope to God dimma gave him a massive spray in front of everyone .

He let down broady and Pickett in their milestone games. An utter disgrace.

The whole Kane Lambert saga is an exercise in futility. If it wasn't bad enough, he now has an achilles tendonitis issue, so another couple of weeks rehab. Cobbling together the odd game here and there this year is just a waste of time and effort for all concerned. There is no way he can get any continuity in his games, therefore no match fitness or touch. No way can play finals, so what is the point? Just handled so badly as far as I am concerned.

It's so frustrating. We never used to cough up leads. From about mid 2017 up until mid 2021 we didn't lose a single game in the fashion that we seem to now.

5 fade-outs this year after being in dominant positions late in the game.

Blues, Saints, Swans, Cats and Suns. There's no way we should've lost those games from the position we were in.

Add West Coast and Collingwood last year.

All horrible ways to lose game.

From 2017 to 2020 we had ‘peak’ Cotch, Dusty, Houli, Jack, Lambert and Edwards. Plus at various times during that 4-year stretch really good injury runs.

From Round 2, 2021 when Prestia did his hammy, we’ve simply never been able to play with a team not missing at least 3 of our best players. We looked like getting close a month ago - then we got injuries/concussion to Cotch, Balta, Prestia and Dusty. And just when we started getting excited about our team in the run home, Nank, Soldo and Lynch get injured and we find out Dusty is missing 2 more games …..

Our biggest problem is injuries rarely seem to happen to Castagna, Aarts or McIntosh … it’s nearly always our guns, and that’s what is killing our ability to play a consistent 4 quarters.

I know all teams have injuries … but last week we were missing Cotch, Dusty, Vlastuin, Balta and Lynch. That’s basically 5 of our best 10 players. Then our 2 x rucks cop in-game injuries…..

Ps. I’ve stopped counting Lambert as an ‘out’.

I’ve lost hope we will get anywhere close to our best team on the park for long enough to give the flag a shake …. but if we do …. If we do …..

We seem to have a lot of heartbreaking loses with no composure.

Even before our premierships we getting done after siren comically by freo, gws, gc. Seems like its in our dna to give up winnable leads.

Under Dimma in games decided by 6-points or under we are 9 wins and 20 losses. So there’s definitely an inherent weakness in tight finishes.

I actually think it’s due to the way we play. We won 3 flags on the back of high risk footy. No chip chip garbage or ball retention. This has served us very well, but does not serve us well in close games as we are not trained to run down the clock. It’s the same reason we seem to constantly give up last minute goals in quarters.

For example, in the last 10-years Geelong are 18 wins and 9 losses in games under a goal. Because they can play tempo and ball retention chip chip garbage as well as anyone. And can also play high tempo footy to try to snatch back leads - ala a few weeks ago against us.

But …. they cannot play high tempo footy for long periods at a high level, which is why they’ve faltered in finals constantly.

So it’s frustrating to lose more close games than we win …. but not having players well trained in slow tempo ball retention footy and focussing on high octane and fast ball movement is also the reason we have 3 recent flags.

So pick your poison … good like the Cats in close finishes, or Premierships.

We have shown glimpses of being able to beat anyone, our best is good enough but we cannot maintain it for four quarters. Think we need to tweak the gameplan to enable us to deliver a more consistent performance across the four quarters if that means we go slower at times then so be it. No point playing great for only half the game. And I don't think it's a injury issue we've coughed up games when we've had few injuries also.

Poor discipline, poor goal kicking and poor composure have also cost us. Again on the coaches.

A little more luck on the injury front and luck with the scumps and we are equal top of the ladder.

Lack of fitness didn’t knock the ball out of Rowell’s hands. Or lack of fitness didn’t cause Castagna to miss from the goal square. Or cause Rioli to yell abuse at the umpire. Or cause Grimes to drop a chest mark.

Dimma has been coaching the lights out this year given our injuries and Dusty issues given we were 2-4 …. we may not win the flag but we’ve at least been ultra competitive.

The year is not over yet !

You mentioned the ‘soft tissue’ debacle and related it to ageing veterans….

Balta, Lynch, Vlastuin, Graham and Prestia were soft tissue (probably a couple of others) and are all under 30yo and Dusty did his first soft tissue in his career… so soft tissue problems has been nothing much to do with ageing veterans going on too long. Although Grimes did a hammy … but he’s not that old and has had chronic soft tissue issues his whole career. Lambert is chronic hip. Cotchin broke his collar bone. Nank his knee. Jack broke a finger. Soldo broke a thumb. Vlastuin was hammy then suspended. Prestia was hammy then knocked out. Dusty was mental break then hammy.

So whilst injuries have been an issue, it hasn’t been fitness problems related to carrying an ageing list for too long.

I don't like the thought of co-captains either. But, I'm not sure who the suitable replacement would have been at the time.

It hasn't been the best 12 months, recruiting included. We didn't seem to turn the list over enough after 2020.

Would like to see a mini in-season review. Dimma needs to be challenged on the game plan, MC on selection/player favouritism and the players challenged on skill execution and discipline.

One thing is for certain if they keep doing the same things they'll get the same results. I hope Benny is stepping in and taking the lead.

Seven losses this year. Seven games where we have died in the second half.

Round 1 - Carlton, up by 15 points at 3/4 time, kick the first goal in Q4... lose by 25 points
Round 3 - St Kilda, lead by 25 points half way through Q3, kick one goal after that... lose by 33 points
Round 5 - Adelaide, struggle all day but fight back to hit the lead in Q3... lose by 19 points
Round 6 - Melbourne, fair to say outclassed for most of the game, but still managed to hold an 8 point lead early in Q3, kick two goals after that... lose by 22 points
Round 11 - Sydney, kick first goal of Q3 to lead by 31 points, kick three goals after that... lose by 6 points
Round 15 - Geelong, down early and with Prestia knocked out, fight back to lead by 17 points early in the last quarter... lose by 3 points
Round 17 - GCS, kick first goal of Q# to lead by 40 points, kick three goals after that... lose by 2 points
Just means we are not good enough this year. When a pattern emerges, means fundamentally we have a problem. In my view, when the oppo lifts the heat, we are unable to cope with it like we have in our successful years. We either go missing, make stupid errors, give away free kicks or run out of legs — all of the above. We haven’t had a fit list all year and our depth particularly in midfield is shite. There is no easy fix to this as our best players are getting older and more injury prone with very little A grade young talent coming thru. Time to rebuild

There is still something to play for this year. The chance to beat Collingwood or Carlton in an elimination final. If we finish 8th there is a very good chance that one of those teams will finish 5th.

We owe Collingwood for 2018 and I'd love to beat them. Ideally, we're up by 7 goals when Cox takes his first mark of the game in the 4th quarter on the half back flank at the Punt Road end of the ground. While the Collingwood faithful are giving him the bronx cheer, that's when we should start the "USA" chant. #byebyepies

Even better would be payback on Carlton for 2013. They get off to the fast start and lead by 5 goals at half time. We're just hanging in there. Then it begins. Cotchin destroys Cripps with a huge tackle. Dusty wins a critical contest in the forward half and creates a goal out of nothing. Then we go bang, bang, bang with goals to MRJ, Shedda and Bolton. We win by 1 point after Tarrant is awarded a contentious holding the ball decision against Curnow in the last 10 seconds. #summerofmelts

Thats the biggest load of bull I have read.

The umps clearly want us to finish 8th or 9th so we are in no mans land. They know which teams to free kick for us and beat and which teams to screw us over and shaft us on the free kicks

Been obvious from the start and get others to win the premiership. The only way for us to beat the system is to go to the draft and be a little patient and think good things for 2023 and beyond and bank on our kids development

Gee Collingwood are really having the inverse season to us aren't they?

Last four matches have been come-from-behind sub 1 goal wins. Unreal.
They have won 8 games by under 11 points and the major reason is Fly backs his kids in over old rejects and develops young kids. We just keep playing old rejects in hope they have some youth rejuvenation moment in them. Brainless morons are running the show.

Yep exactly 💯 they aren't nothing special got a few good kids , got quality assistant's around him and a few recruits from other clubs playing with hunger and as team shows you make a few changes makes a huge difference.

some of my observations:
1. really pooor coaching.
dimma is clueless in the box in tight situations. mcrae and leppa always there to guide him.
2. dumb football i q in our players.
too many stupid decisions, this is coachable in scenarios but at times they resembled amatuers playing in a pro league
3. Poor discipline.
giving away frees and dissent- beig heads.
4. Did we get better?
Only some players have got better (baker and bolton). Balta has got worse. our veterans have not got better. so we need to inject better players.
5. Midfeild woes.
we had 5 picks insite 40 didnt we. did we recruit one big bodied mid? no? we get pushed of the ball too easily. I would have gone for hobbs ahead of gibscus. There were still mids around. we get skinny blokes clarke and banks.
6. Forward entries.
Disaster. Is Teague our entry coach. we still have high entries into 50 and we cannot convert.

A lof of this is capable of changing if we change personell. its now time to look at coaching options after dimma or look at other options. I just dont think his voice is respected anymore unless we build a team around him.
