It's on again...

It's that time of year again where we get together some of the best junior footy and state league watchers to act as recruiters ahead of this years National Draft. As always there will be a bit of ‘foxing’ going on before the actual Phantom Draft which will happen after final lists are finalised. And who doesn't love looking back at these trial runs, and seeing where players are ranked prior to the combine.

Kick off

The draft will start on Monday the 23rd of July, as once again GWS kick it off.

Join in

The thread is one of the biggest hits every year and we love the comments from people who know particular players and want to comment or ask questions. But just remember it's a really subjective thing and we dont want comments that aren't constructive. These participants dont profess to be experts, but watch enough to have some knowledge about what they're talking about.

To the participants

Most of you will know by now. We don't want to be waiting around too long, so if you have to PM either myself or Snoop your selection. And try to get the descriptions done as soon as possible, so things stay in some sort of order.

And just who is participating this year? We have some old, and some new participants this time around. Victoria and WA have a strong showing, so it will be interesting to see those recruiters fight it out for their players. While I'll be doing my best to make SA proud.

I haven't started writing anything up yet so all the write ups for my picks will be done off the cuff. Unlikely then that they will be too long.

It's going to be interesting to see who gets thrown up that I haven't really considered yet. This is a needs year for the Lions which is a bit of a shame as there are few guys out there would I wouldn't mind taking a punt on in the second and third rounds.

# 1 - GWS Giants

Lachlan Whitfield - Dandenony Stingrays / 184 / 75

Must admit i did ponder this one for a bit as the glaring whole in the Giants list is a decent young ruck prospect and whilst we have Downie it wouldn't to have the best ruck prospect I reckon I have seen in years. But alas I go with Whitlfield because he is just an unbelievable young player. Seen a lot of him over last few years and I don't think I have ever left unimpressed. His approach to footy, work rate, endurance, skill level are all first class. Has the magic ability as well like Pendles to just have that extra little bit of time to make the right decision. I reckon a great trait in the really good players is also how they bring others into the game and Lachie does this as well. He creates space and opportunity for his teammates and that will be a real asset at GWS as they develop.

With a midfield group of Shiel, Coniglio, Greene and now Lachie and a couple of kids like Cameron and Patton up the front its not going to be long before the men from the mountain hoist the premiership flag at Skoda!

Hard not to be impressed with Whitfield. Anyone know why he spent so much time up forward at the Champs? Maybe to give the other Country mids a chance but I did think it hurt their chances overall.

Anyway does Offsider put in a bid for Viney at number 2? I probably would. Viney is just the type of player that GC need although it is a fraction high.

Before I take my pick what are the rules with bidding on father son prospects?

Mentioned in the rules that I sent out that unless a player is nominated with a first round pick then he is fair game. Now in saying that Daniher has been nominated by Foj1 so Chris25 needs to update that but all others are fair game Offsider............away you go!

*cough* I did email Chris25 nominating Viney last night, not sure he's received it yet...

Pick 2: Sam Mayes
Height: 187cm
Weight: 78kg
DOB: 20/05/1994
Club: North Adelaide (SA)

There were probably three prospects whom I rated very closely here and found it difficult to split all of them. In the end I went with Sam Mayes, I just think that he is a super talent and although he has struggled in patches this year a bit I think his game will translate perfectly to AFL. I see him primarily as a midfielder, one who will start in the center square and is capable of winning the ball on both the inside and outside, as well as being a very good medium forward who will kick a lot of goals. After last year I was unsure if he would be a mid or just a very good forward but I have seen enough to consider him a mid now. He has a very well rounded game, one which should translate to the AFL very well.

Athletically Mayes is very good, his speed is good, he is very agile and moves really well in traffic and just takes the right options time and time again. He is not your super high-end athlete but he is just such a smooth mover it’s hard not to be impressed. He doesn’t find enough of the ball yet on a consistent basis but when he does he is very composed, efficient and has a high hurt factor. His kicking is elite, probably the best in the draft IMO, he has a low flat powerful kick and hits targets consistently and makes good decisions. His hands are very good, he rarely fumbles and he just uses the ball by hand and foot so well, he has a lot of time with the ball and that is what you look for with junior players. He is a very good mark as a leading forward and also capable of taking strong contested marks. Defensively he needs to improve a bit but he does put in the effort to run both ways just not as much as I would like to see, but all junior footballers are likely this so not overtly worried. He probably needs to put on a bit of weight and improve his endurance before he realises his full potential but I think he will be a super player as a mid/HFF. I could see him kicking 30+ goals a year regularly despite being predominantly a full time mid rotating forward.

Well done - unfortunately the rule we have for this works against you calling anyone's bluff I guess. I don't know that the Suns will pitch for him in the real thing but given their abundance of talls then maybe they will. I reckon Silvagni has done a terrific job with the kids he picked - he earmarked kids who could win their own ball as a standout trait they had to have. Greene, Adams, Treloar, Coniglio, Smith etc have all shown that. I don't think the Suns did that so much and hence they may go for Viney as he is the best kid in the country for that. If that the Dees would land Grundy and that wouldn't be the worst outcome for them either. Will be really interesting.

What are the chances the Suns don't go for Viney and don't hit Grundy bc of the talls they already have? That would be a dream outcome for Melbourne.

I don't see GC grabbing Grundy despite his talent, but i agree Viney is the best inside mid in the draft and worthy of a top 5 pick, I could see Melbourne getting both Viney and Grundy at 3 and 4.

I believe the reason why Lachie played mainly as a HFF is because VC thought he would get tagged every game. He was instructed to push up the ground and create a five man forward line opening up the forward area for Membrey and co to lead in to.

I just cannot see the Suns selecting Grundy, so there is a good chance that Melbourne could secure a draft of Grundy, Toumpas/Mayes...and Viney in the second round.

What an outcome for Melbourne. Surely not even Melbourne could stuff that up could they.

Anyway think Suns will trade with GWS for pick #2 anyway and Giants will get Grundy as well.

Important Rule Announcement

It was remiss of me not to say that there will be no zone selections in the Trial Run so all players are available

Mini draft pick?

Martin or Hogan worth that?

Pick 5: Western Bulldogs
Oliver Wines (185cm, 83kg, 7.10.1994, Bendigo Pioneers)

The type of player the Bulldogs may not neccesarily need but he is the best available here. Big inside ball winner, who is clean by hand and foot, Wines often makes the right choices coming from the pack and is more than able to play on the outside as a link up player if required.

Has kicked goals for both the Pioneers and for Vic Country which shows his versatility to pay anywhere.

Pick 6: Western Bulldogs
Johnathan O'Rourke (183cm, 75kg, 21.4.1994, Calder Cannons)

A hamstring injury cruelled most of his 2011 season but has come back strongly in 2012. O'Rourke is another big time inside ball winner who can help out the young pups already in the Bulldogs colors. Works hard both ways and can really influence games either on the inside or the outside. Another good strong decision maker, O'Rourke rarely wastes a disposal and is another player who can play a variety of roles at AFL level.

Interesting to see you go with Mayes at 2 Offsider, whats your thinking behind that? calling you bluff..
